| Customer Reviews: The Cleo that we all know and love April 8, 2007 bernie (Arlington, Texas) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
Cleo's have come and gone. There have been many films and books depicting Cleo as she really was to great melodramatic Cleo. Three other popular Cleo's were the Claudette Colbert (1934), Vivien Leigh (1945), and Leonor Varela (1999). There were many more variations between those years.
br /The one Cleo that will always stand out and lets not forget Mark, is the one staring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (1963). I was old enough to enjoy it on the big screen. Rex Harrison made a good Caesar; watch him have a similar attitude in "The Honey Pot" (1967).
br /Enough time, thought, and money have been put into this production that I am bound to overlook a few of the most important items about this film. The movie is more than just the actors are. The characters are very well portrayed. The set and costumes are dazzling. They really showed up in the scene when Cleopatra enterd Rome. And the navel battle was spectacular.

br /Every one is going to have a favorite Cleo and find flaws in the others. However this Cleo will always the one others are gauged by.

WONDERFUL BUT LONG June 6, 2006 Mr Happy (HERE!) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful but very long movie that goes over two discs.
br /A classic love story with two brillant actors taking the led, Richard and Liz steal the movie with wonderful lines and classic acting.
br /The extras are not up to much and some are very dated but this still gets a 5 star rating.
br /Let us hope the remake is just as good.
Cleopatra Special edition April 29, 2009 Sinatra fan no.1 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This DVD contains 5 hours of viewing, containing the film itself and interesting additional extras. In my opinion well worth the modest price paid

A must for all movie buffs and for general entertainment. Sumptuous in all aspects apart from a couple of ill advised casting choices.
Hmmmm March 14, 2009 S. Tattersall (London) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying that Miss Taylor is pretty superb as cleopatra, the sets are great and the whole production is just enormous. Now the moan, I hated the way caesars assassination was dealt with, viewed thru a vision by cleopatra in the flames of a fire....it is this kind of stuff which removes the reality from the film, the director should be slapped for such things. Secondly, as you are all no doubt aware this epic film is meant to be 6 hours long but Zannuck at Fox ordered it slashed to ribbons to make it fit a format time, effectively rendering the film meaningless. Though one hour has been put back it still lacks two hours. Therefore a staggering work, given the odd directorial self indulgence, has become ramshackle and incoherent. If you know history, as i do, it will make you shout at the screen. If your not bothered by such things, then you might not even notice. Its still worth owning tho, cos it is spectacular and Taylor is so so beautiful....Richard Burton isnt bad either :)
