5 out of 5 stars One of my Favourite Films of All Time...   November 1, 2009

...and one of the few films that is better than the book. Normally, I hate it when producers switch the action from wherever to The U.S., but here it actually works to the story's advantage, making the distance and the disconnect between the lives of Tom the teacher, growing up on the Norfolk broads, and the working-class Pittsburgh students all the more pronounced. br / br /There are some dazzlingly inventive scenes from director Steven Gyllenhaal (the charabanc trip, for instance) in this dark, twisted tale of love, loss and identity. br / br /Oh. And one of the best shag scenes ever on film.

I found the film very powerful. It took a little while to recognise the story from the novel, which I read quite a few years ago. Graham Swift is one of my favourite authors.
