A Suprising Sequel April 21, 2006 M. R. Jones (Plymouth, UK) 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
Normally any sequel (especially with TV Movies) is usually a disgrace to film. But in this case, its not at all bad.
br /While watching it, you are bound to think why didnt they stick to the style of the first one. The truth is...it is nothing compared to ths first one. But in its own right it is an enjoyable story, and will entertain you. As for the disk, the lack of extras is excusable due to the length (nearly 3 Hours) of the program and budget restrictions. If you liked Merlin, you will probably like this too.
One to avoid January 23, 2007 P. D. Hayward (England) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
If you liked the original merlin and were hoping for more of the same then avoid this very poor "sequel".
br /
br /Set in an alternate reality to the first. Merlin is almost a completly different character and is no longer identifiable as he was before and makes a very brief appearence in the movie. The same can be said for Miranda Richardson's Lady in the lake, who like all the characters seriously lacks any depth.
br /
br /The storyline itself leaves alot to be desired at is largely sporadic with the editors seemling deciding to change the mood and direction along the way. The film does come into its own a little at the start of the second part but its short lived.
br /
br /The quality of special effects, sets and camera work are very poor throughout and will disillusion anyone trying to get into the story who has seen a movie after the 1980's.
br /
br /If you must, rent this film but don't expect to enjoy it.
To enjoy this film... forget about the first one May 10, 2006 Angel_of_Music (England) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I can praise this film for its special effects and magnificent acting by a cast headed by Sam Neill and Miranda Richardson. For the rest of it, I can only express my huge disappointment.
br /
br /The story is completely different to the original and contradicts it throughout. Arthur is still on the throne when Merlin falls into an enchanted sleep, and the wizard is horrified when he awakes 50 years later to find Arthur dead and the Holy Grail (which was not featured in the original) gone. The Lady of the Lake is now evil. As the title suggests, the film focuses on Merlin's Apprentice Jack, rather than Merlin himself, and Neill's role is literally halved.
br /
br /When you prepare to watch this, forget you saw the first film. Think of this as something completely new, with no relation to the first. It just happens to have two actors in the same roles.
