Amazon.co.uk Review The movie that helped breathe new life into the summer blockbuster, the success of IPirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl/I is remarkable for several reasons.PFirstly, there's the unlikely source material. There's no previous history of theme park rides inspiring major hit movies, yet that's just what's happened here. Secondly, there's the patchy performance of pirate-related movies over the years (does anyone remember seeing ICutthroat Island/I in a cinema?). And then there's Ithat/I performance from Johnny Depp, the one that had Disney executives in a flap prior to the release of the movie. His Captain Jack Sparrow is a fantastic, unlikely creation, proving to be both unpredictable yet utterly compelling. Such is his impact on the film that it's hardly surprising Depp snared an Oscar nomination for the role.PYet Depp's performance shouldn't blind anyone to the film's many other qualities. The supporting cast, particularly the likes of Geoffrey Rush, Jack Davenport and Jonathan Pryce are all clearly having a whale of a time, while Gore Verbinski's pacey yet controlled direction rarely lets the momentum slow. And with all their work grounded by a quality script and worthwhile story, the end result is a film that clicks in many, many different ways.POf course, it's now proved the inspiration for a pair of sequels, yet no matter how they turn out, IPirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl/I will always stand as a quite brilliant example of what happens on those rare occasions when Hollywood blockbusters get it absolutely right. And it's a treat that can easily be enjoyed time after time.--ISimon Brew/I

Captain Jack rules! July 16, 2006 Tim Bentley (Shetland, UK) 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
Brilliant, just brilliant. Like other reviewers I had to wonder at the sense of creating a movie based on a Disneyland ride, but then I thought, what the heck, movies have been made of worse things!

br /I loved the movie. As I child I was given a copy of Treasure Island at my school's prize giving and enjoyed the whole pirate ethos. Ultimately though, the whole pirate thing fell flat until Johnny Depp turned up as Captain Jack Sparrow - finally a pirate that I could believe in! The movie romped from one scene to another barely pausing for breath and certainly leaving no slack in the tale. If I had a criticism, it would be that Orlando Bloom as Will Turner seemed a mite wooden, although he certainly looked the part. Keira Knightley was marvellous as was Mackenzie Crook. Look for a cameo by Guy Siner as the Harbourmaster - UK viewers will know him as "Allo Allo"s Lt Gruber with his little tank!
Brilliant! September 24, 2008 H. Butler (UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'd like to think I'm responsible, mature adult with a certain amount of education...and I loved every moment of this film!!! Fantastic humour, a great cast and a brilliant plot. The perfect film.
"You best start believing in ghost stories. You're in one." October 29, 2006 Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Ok, ok, I admit it. I was a skeptic. How in the world could they turn a ride from Disneyland into a good movie? But, being the Disney fiend that I am, I went to see this movie when it came out, and I immediately fell in love.

br /Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is needing a new ship, so he sails into Port Royal. Being a pirate, he fully intends to steal one. He doesn't quite get away with it, however, and winds up in jail.
br /
br /That night, more pirates attack Port Royal. But, instead of trying to free Captain Jack, they kill, pillage, and kidnap the governor's daughter, Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Seems she has something they want.
br /
br /This doesn't sit well with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). He and Elizabeth have been friends since they were kids and he secretly loves her. Despite his hatred of pirates, he makes a deal with Captain Jack to hunt down the Black Pearl and free Elizabeth.
br /
br /What Will and Elizabeth don't realize is there is a very real curse on the crew of the Black Pearl. They believe Elizabeth is their only hope of lifting it, so they will stop at nothing to do just that.
br /
br /This movie works on every level. While the story starts a little slowly, once the port is attacked, things pick up and the pace never lags. The climax is a tad too long, but that's being nit picky. Along the way we get some great swordplay, a couple double crosses, a few twists, and plenty of action.
br /
br /Johnny Depp as Captain Jack completely steals the show. Not only is he given the best lines, but he delivers them so well. Every scene he is in guarantees at least one laugh.
br /
br /That's not to diminish the work the other actors do. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly are also fantastic and do get their own share of memorable lines. Geoffrey Rush makes a great villain with his portrayal of Captain Barbossa. The supporting cast is fine as well.
br /
br /The movie doesn't forget its roots. There are loads of references to the famous ride including the song "A Pirates Life for Me," and the line "Dead men tell no tales." My favorite was the prisoners trying to attract the attention of the dog holding the key. (Jack's line "That dog is never going to move" absolutely slays me.) While they are fun for those familiar with the ride to spot, familiarity with the ride isn't essential to understanding the movie. These bits add to the fun, but the story doesn't hinge on them.
br /
br /And I must mention the special effects. There are lots of living skeletons in this film, and they look great. A little dated looking already three years later, but again it's being nit picky. This film could not have been made any earlier and had the same level of effectiveness. The special effects blend seamlessly into the film. And, most importantly, they support the story being told, not the other way around.
br /
br /While based on a Disney ride, this film is a rather scary ghost story with lots of violence. Take the PG-13 rating seriously and view it to make sure your kids will enjoy it before you let them see it.
br /
br /Having said that, this is a wonderful film for teens and adults. It's got adventure, humor, and romance all rolled into one.
A Pearl of a Pirate Film December 6, 2006 KAT (Kettering Northants) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I honestly didn't believe that this film would be my 'thing' but one Wednesday afternoon with nothing on the telly I decided to watch it anyway. Now I can't get enough! Johnny Depp is incredible as the savvy eccentric rogue Captain Jack Sparrow, an infamous Pirate known the world over for his crimes. When Jack rolls up to Port Royal, his own ship capsises and when his identity is discovered he is condemed to hang. However, in a bizzare twist of fate, Will Turner, whose own father was an old friend of Jack, releases Jack from jail in order to help him track down the dreaded Black Pearl. Will (Orlando Bloom) is intend on rescuing his lover Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightly) the daughter of a rich aristocrat who has been kidknapped by Pirates due to her posession of a mysterious medalion that has Cursed the Pirates of the Black Pearl forever...
br /
br /Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly, and Orlando Bloom are the three main characters in this film, but it Johnny Depps performance alone that makes the film so fantastic. As the Infamous 'Savvy' Sparrow he's funny, entertaining and hilariously 'evil' at times. He's always unpredictable which adds tension to the film
br /
br /I wouldn't recommed this to young-young kids as the 'Skeleton Crew' can be a bit scary (My 7 year old Nephew loves it but not so his 4 year old brother) It is at the adults descresion as to whether their children watch it - but even so its definatly worth a watch - just for Johhny alone! Disney does it again!
Back to basics! September 17, 2006 Top Cat (Somewhere in England, apparently) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Finally, we get a classic family movie that doesnt rely on fancy computer animation throughout, or techno-babble plots with silly characters. The Curse of the black pearl is incredibly well directed, and the settings are fantastic throughout. If theirs one thing that really shines though, its the lovely soundtrack that rounds off the whole 'swash-buckling' feel to the film.
br /Johnny Depp is brilliant as the tipsy Pirate, while Orlando Bloom puts on a strong performance thats really made a name for himself. The sword fights between the characters are excellently done too!
br /A brilliant film all round, thats a real break from the futuristic and computerized films that are pumped out for the money. Well done Disney!
