5 out of 5 stars The Batman... A Fantastic New Series   February 23, 2007
Indian Sunblaze (London, UK)

Here it is, the latest Batman offering (although I'm sure it won't be the last!). There seem to be many mixed reviews about this series, but being a Batman fan, I decided to watch it before passing judgement... br / br /This double disc set contain all 13 episodes from The Batman Season 1, including The Bat in the Belfry, Traction, Call of the Cobblepot, The Man Who Would Be Bat, The Big Chill, The Cat and the Bat, The Big Heat, QA, Big Dummy, Topsy Turvy, Bird of Prey, The Rubber Face of Comedy, and The Clay Face of Tragedy. br / br /There are several `extras' in this box set, including New Look, New Direction, New Knight (this is the best extra, basically a `behind the scenes' into The Batman), Building The Batman (pretty much a ploy to get you to buy the merchandise), Gotham PD Case Files: Highly Confidential (a profile of The Batman's foes), The Batman Junior Detective Challenge (a quick quiz hosted by Alfred), The Batman Junior Detective Exam - Level 2 (a second quiz hosted by The Batman himself), The Batman Big Chill Challenge (a game), Trailers (of upcoming DVD releases like the Justice League Box Set). br / br /So... it's definitely different, but it a really good way. Batman is new(ish) at the game, celebrating his third year of being The Batman and he's all alone (apart from Alfred, his butler), no official (or unofficial) side-kicks or Commissioner Gordon. He meets all the villains we love to hate, Penguin, Catwoman, Bane, Mr Freeze, and of course his nemesis: Joker. br / br /This isn't the polished Batman most of us know, he's unsure and he makes mistakes... but he learns from them and then he picks himself up and tries again. br / br /Well worth the buy, hope they release season 2 soon!

4 out of 5 stars The Batman   October 15, 2006

This new animated series has been criticised, mainly in the States, for not being as deep as the older 1990's animated series. Though it probably won't be as remembered with quite as much affection as the older series, it is different enough and good enough to enjoyable in its own right. br /The focus of the show is different, with the stories having a more superhero feel than the 50's crime show of the 90's show or the Blade Runner feel of Batman Beyond. They've made The Batman character a young man, three years into his career. All the characteristics that make Batman great are here but shown in a more obvious way. You'll see his determination in Traction, his angst and guilt in the Big Chill. br /In this show Batman uses more technology and hardware to catch his prey. Is this a cynical ploy by the producers to make kids buy toys or a sound creative decision, showing how the Batman can defeat his redesigned and more powerful rogue's gallery of foes? I think it's the latter. Bane on venom now grows to ten times his original size, whereas Mr. Freeze is a genetic mutation needing only a wave of his hand to cause a storm of ice. With Mr. Freeze they have also reverted back to his 1960's TV origin story of a man who was frozen by Batman and wants revenge. (Mr. Freeze is voiced by Clancy Brown the first animated series' Two-Face and you'll also hear 60's Batman Adam West in the cast.) br /The last two episodes are a great finale even to the point of borrowing ideas from Alan Moore's The Killing Joke. The Batman is something new, fresh, zestful, colourful and enjoyable. And while I enjoyed some episodes more than others I'd still recommend its purchase.

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable, involving animation that really works   June 24, 2009
Mr. Rwj Nixon
Lets be honest, this animated series always had big shoes to fill, what with inevitable comparisons to the much lauded and award winning Batman the Animated Series, and whilst it may not quite hit those dizzy heights (yet), it still has much to recommend it. br / Making everything that is old new again, the series kicks of with Batman only three years into his career as a costumed crimefighter, very much the urban legend when the series begins and a wanted vigilante by the end of it. He is also very much the loner (aside from loyal retainer Alfred Pennyworth), with no Robin, Batgirl or Jim Gordon, but what he does have are villains, and lots of them. The series kicks of with the introduction of the Joker, and forget what went before in the animated series, this Joker is a true crackpot (and voiced terrifically by Kevin Michael Richardson), and from then on its pretty much the rogues gallery for the rest of the season, including a revamped Bain, the Penguin, Manbat, Catwoman, Mr Freeze (who gets a really nice makeover), and even a great new version of Clayface who is introduced in a terrific 2 part season finale. br / The animation is always good, with nice strong lines and a dynamic style, and the voice acting is top notch in my opinion (particularly Joker and Alfred), and whilst the storylines can be a little simplistic at times, this is no detriment to what is a highly enjoyable new addition to the Batman cannon.
