Amazon.co.uk Review
Despite its inevitable fate as a critically reviled box-office flop, IBasic Instinct 2/I sure has a funny way of holding your attention. It's not just Sharon Stone's trash-talk and occasional nudity that keeps you watching, but also the way she gamely earns every cent of her $14 million paycheck, vamping like a real pro in her second outing as mystery novelist and alleged serial killer Catherine Tramell. Now living in London, Catherine sets her lethal sights on Michael Glass (David Morrissey), the control-freak psychiatrist assigned to evaluate her as a risk-addicted suspect in the "accidental" killing of a star soccer player. Turns out Catherine's just getting started (or is she?), and that's bad news for Glass's ex-wife, a tabloid journalist, and the Scotland Yard detective (David Thewlis) who's desperate to put Catherine in jail. With plenty of sex, murder and salacious dialogue, IBI2/I is certainly never boring, especially with the morbid fascination of seeing the once formidable Stone torpedo her career in a sequel that took 14 years (and countless drafts of screenplays and at least one high-profile lawsuit) to bring to the screen. She's still impressively hot at age 47, prompting critic Roger Ebert to observe, "the Catherine Tramell role cannot be played well, but Sharon Stone can play it badly better than any other actress alive." So, while this ill-fated sequel falls just short of being a guilty pleasure (if only because Morrissey is no match for Michael Douglas in the 1992 original), it's enjoyably absurd and slickly produced, and the hot-tub scene is guaranteed to wear out the freeze-frame function on a lot of DVD players. For some viewers, that's reason enough for multiple viewings.-- IJeff Shannon/I

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   July 13, 2006

I was a big fan of the first Basic Instinct and after seeing the trailers for this I couldn't wait for it to come out. br / br /Two minutes into the film I realised that it was going to be great, and what followed is the most thrilling, twisted amazing film I've seen all year. br / br /The best thing about this film is the plot, it blows the first movie away and will leave you thinking about how clever it all is. br / br /I work for a TV news station, the week the film was released at the cinema we had dozens of faxes from Christian organisations stating what a disgrace it was and generally slagging it off as the worst film ever made. Certainly in America the slur campaign worked with many people who had never seen the film calling it 'laughably bad'. It is a shame that the pre release anti hype gave this film such a bad and short run at the theatres when it is actually EXTREMELY good.

Some of the reviews here are a joke. If you guys/girls are so clever, then why didn't you write the follow up and become rich? It's well and good to criticise but only if you can do better. Write a script and send it in, maybe you have hidden talent? br /We can pick holes in every film ever made. Take The Green Mile. If John Coffey had this healing and life-giving power, why didn't he bring the two sister's back from the dead? The reason is, if he did there'd be no story and hence no film. Things have to be left to the imagination to make them work. br /For me, Basic Instinct 2 worked because at the end of it I'm thinking, (or am I a thicko and these other reviewers hyper-intelligent beings), did he (Glass) or Tramell do it? Okay, the cop's could have tailed them both, but (Heh-Heh) again, no damned story. For goodness sake reviewers, if you're gonna be a critic, work for your local (or National, if you can swing it) newspaper and get paid for it. In the meantime, if you are THAT good at writing stories where no one complains about the book or the movie adaptation, get on and do so, the £millions will be of use to you, no doubt. From the Lounge Lizard's point of view, I thoroughly enjoyed Basic Instinct 2 as much as the first, and I enjoyed it for Stone's/Tramell's CONFIDENCE, what a wonderful world to live in where EVERYTHING is achievable. I took note! Will you?

5 out of 5 stars Basic Instinct 2 VS the Media   January 9, 2007

Admittedley, i havent actually seen 'Basic Instinct 1' so if the negative reviews in the press are mearley comparing it to that, then i am in no position to comment. what i will say though, is that having been given this DVD at Christmas, i was pleasently suprised: br /Set and filmed entirley on Location in London (and the Royal holloway university in Egham!) i found this tense thriller fantastic. br /Apparantly the same as in Basic Instinct 1, Stone plays Catherine Trammell, the crime novellist whos stories have a habbit of becoming reality- and after a rather... Er-hem 'insteresting' car crash resulting in Tramell up against a murder charge for her footballer boyfriend's death, we learn that she is addicted to Risk. br /All im going to say is that personally i found the film enjoyable, and i thought that the storyline was actually (contrary to the critics) very well written and put together, and was a great film to watch... The 'twist/resoloution' at the end still leaves you wondering 'who did it' and wanting more. br /If you are undecided about this film, the best thing i could say is to give it a shot- ignore the media - they are like sheep and copy eachother! br /Judge for your self! I thought it was great!

5 out of 5 stars totally amazing   March 21, 2007

when i first watched basic instinct number one, i was shocked inspired and mesmerised by the twisted fates of the chrarcters that were part of the prduction. br / br /michael douglas left a very hard part to beat, his character was amazing in every way possible funny and sexily naive. so when david morrisey was asked to be michael glass i was pleasently happy. his acting skills impecable and maybe beat michael if i dare say!!! br / br /as for ms sharon stone!! well where on earth does one start. the infamous leg crossing scene is what made her famous made her what she is today. she had a lot of hard work to do in this film to pull of a sequal after 14 year gap was ceratinly going to be hard. but by god she done it, this film showed she can get even more twisted in the head and more outragious. her departure from our screens was missed and i am very glad she is back. her acting skills showed she can actually keep her kit on and still potray sex in the greatest form. she made me laugh from time to time which is a relief from some of the sex thrillers of today. i raise my hands to her. br / br /the film was slated for the lucricidy of it all. but sex does not have to be in your face and explicit the greatest sex is in the mind. i was throughly disapointed with some peoples reveiws about how she did not bare all enough, she left more to the imagination which is fantastic as i sure dont want my big screens turned into some porno movie, just ruins the mind and leaves you with less to think about. br / br /i honour this film as it was shot in london and showed two very different sides to the capital the old buildings and the new ones, and i was impressed that they did not put in a red double deacker or a police man. i thank god they did not as there is more to the city than that. br / br /hats of the directors and everyone involved with the movie i was excited when i heard it was coming out now i have watched it i cant get enough. br / br /role on number three come on trammel become even more twisted than you already are.

5 out of 5 stars How do you picture it?   April 13, 2007

I watched and loved the very first Basic Instinct (who could forget the infamous scene where Sharon Stone flashes her err... pork pie?) and looked forward to watching this one. I was NOT disappointed. I was a bit concerned when I heard English accents instead of American ones and my first impression was "why is it in London?" but once I got over that and into the movie I loved it. It's pretty much the same theme as the first one with Sharon Stone looking even more hot to death today than she did back then (I couldn't get over her eyebrows in the first one - how can someone seriously seduce someone with those eyebrows???). Like the first one, there is a memorable scene where Sharon Stone pulls up a chair and sits on it backwards then talks total filth to the leading man. In short, this film is amazing. End of!
