"Evil Prevails" January 29, 2009 James Uscroft (UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
'Lord of War' is a spectacular film in every sense of the word, with neither the story getting in the way of the message or the message getting in the way of the story.
br /
br /Indeed, even the spoof 'QVC' commercial before the film, offering AK47's to anyone who can afford to pay is worth the price of the DVD. But in the end, the film boils down to that immortal quote by Edmund Burke:
br /
br /"Evil prevails when good men do nothing."
br /
br /Or as Nicholas Cage states rather bluntly, "Evil Prevails."
br /
br /By far the most powerful example of this is the character of the Gunrunner's brother; a 'Good Man' who is sickened and enraged by the sight of the weapons his brother sells being used to murder women and children. But instead of killing his brother or even speaking up, he struggles to drown out the screams of his conscience by turning to booze and cocaine.
br /
br /Towards the end of the film however, he tries to do the right thing; giving his life in the failed attempt to protect a refugee camp full of women and children. But by then, it is already far too late, and the massacre still goes ahead as planned.
br /
br /Of course, it's the President of Liberia who has some of the best lines in the film.
br /
br /"A 'USED' Gun? That's a good one."
br /
br /"I try to set an example but it is difficult, eh. Personally, I blame MTV."
br /
br /"A bullet from a 14 year old is just as effective as one from a 40 year old. Often more effective. No one can stop this bath of blood."
br /
br /But when push comes to shove, it is Nicolas Cage's soliloquy after he's been arrested which really drives the nail home:
br /
br /"Soon there's gonna' be a knock on that door and you will be called outside. In the hall, there will be a man who outranks you. First, he'll compliment you on the fine job you've done; that you're making the world a safer place, that you're going to receive a commendation, a promotion. And then he's going to tell you that I am to be released.
br /
br /You're gonna' protest. You'll probably threaten to resign. But in the end I will be released.
br /
br /The reason I'll be released is the same reason that you think I'll be convicted. I do rub shoulders with some of the most vile, sadistic men calling themselves leaders today. But some of those men are the enemies of your enemies. And whilst the biggest arms dealer in the world is your boss, the President of the United States who ships more merchandise in a day then I do in a year, sometimes its embarrassing to have his fingerprints on the guns. Sometimes he needs freelancers like me to supply the forces he can't be seen supplying."
br /
br /And finally, just to annoy those people who still support the `War on Terror,' here is a quote from an American comedian that really sums up this "Battle of Good vs. Evil" for me:
br /
br /"Saddam has terrible weapons of Mass destruction."
br /
br /"How do you know?"
br /
br /"Err, we looked at the receipt."
One of the best November 3, 2006 Nathan Turnbull (Sandhurst, Uk) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm not a fan of Nicholas Cage and normally avoid his films however I was persuaded to buy this film by the many good reviews.
br /
br /This film is excellent, with cage doing a great job of portraying the arms dealer Yuri Orlov, a man who seams to be able to separate dealing arms to third world dictators from the misery and death these weapons bring. Ultimately his business destroys his own family but still he cannot give up the trade as he is just too good an arm dealer whose creative thinking gets him out of allsorts of tricking situations.
br /
br /Lord of war highlights the full horror of the arms trade and how the major world powers sit back and do nothing and to some extent support the trade, but it does so in away that is not pushy or preaching and does not try to suggest any answers.
br /
br /The film is well shot and the sets/locations are very convincing. The other cast members also put in very convincing performances.
br /
br /If you buy this DVD you are forced to watch a chocolate bar advert but you can skip through the trailers by using the next chapter button | but not the forward fast.

br /Great film.

Excellent Movie August 13, 2006 Steven Stewart (steveo.stewart@hotmail.co.uk) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This movie is based around a man called Yuri Orlov who in order to make money goes into a very dark trade. Arms trading to be exact, Yuri starts off by just selling one gun to a gangster then he moves up to bigger things and starts selling weapons to supply a full army with firepower to win the war.
br /This amount of money he is making from this trade is huge and it lands him a supermodel girlfriend named Ava Fontaine who is oblivious to what Yuri really does for a living. Soon they marry and life seems peachy for these two but somebody is trying to ruin it all, a cop by the name of Jack Valentine but Jack is trying so hard to catch Yuri in the act but never gets what he wants.
br /
br /This is an incredible movie and Nicholas Cage once again delivers an excellent role in the movie. At times i found this movie very confusing but towards the end of the movie you gained a full understanding for what had happened earlier in the movie.
br /
br /Great Movie and excellent cast all round so it is a top movie that everybody should see at least once.

br /8/10 Killer movie.
Harvester of sorrow February 11, 2008 Ogun Eratalay For me this is a true story of an ever booming weapons industry. In the film a Yuri Orlov supplies every army with every weapon they need. An interpol agent who pursues his every move has to release him after cathing him because of his powerful friends. As told in the film the biggest arms dealers are the leaders of the US, England, France, China etc. So when they want to supply arms clandestinely they need freelance arms dealers. The film is shockingly realistic. Especially the situation after the break up of the Soviet Union offers opportunity to arms smugglers. Africa is full of armed movements craving for weapons. In the film Charles Taylor of Liberia is portrayed with an alias perfectly by Eamonn Walker.
A Chilling Movie May 2, 2008 David R. Grimshaw (Guernsey, Channel Islands.) The whole tone of this movie is set by its unusual and shocking opening - the story of a bullet from its manufacture to its final resting place in a child's skull. It is a simple idea which reminds you throughout the film of the REAL consequences of the world wide arms trade.
br /The movie is about arms trader Yuri Orlov (Nicholas Cage) who is also the narrator. His career unfolds from sordid beginnings as a small time gun dealer to one of the worlds largest private merchants of death. Based upon a real life character, Cage's performance is an effective mix of comedy, irony and a chilling `matter of factness'. At no time does this movie descend into sentimentality or moralising. This glimpse into the murky world of an arms trader as seen through the eyes of Cage's devious and amoral anti-hero is a powerful experience.
