4 out of 5 stars Better than you might expect   August 25, 2006

This is worth seeing for anyone interested in Elvis. It shows Elvis' story in a candid light that we have never seen before. It is surprisingly honest about Elvis' flaws and weaknesses. His inappropriate pursuit of the 14 year old Priscilla is not glossed over nor is his drug abuse. It even shows the scene where Elvis gives drugs to the young Priscilla and knocks her out for 2 days and refuses to allow a doctor to be called. This is no haliography. br / br /What this shows very well is the control Colonel Parker had over Elvis and the insecurities Elvis felt that his fame would be taken away from him if he didn't do what Col. Parker said. The scene where the Col. makes Elvis burn his books about spirituality was very telling. br / br /The sets and costumes are amazing. I agree that Myers is not great but then who could play Elvis? If you compare it to how well Joquim Phoenix played Johnny Cash then it doesn't come off well. br / br /However this is the Elvis story as you have never seen it before. If you can't be bothered to read Peter Guralnick's two biographies of Elvis then this is the next best thing! As close to the truth as we'll ever see. And for that reason it's well worth seeing.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable   June 19, 2009

I really enjoyed this dramatisation of Elvis' life. I thought the mood and the setting was great. However, some of the casting and acting was perhaps a little dubious. br / br /Ultimately, I think I would rather just catch one of the numerous live concerts and just see the man in action for real. But I will say that this is great for anyone looking to find a little Elvis related drama.

4 out of 5 stars Very good watch   September 7, 2009

Very good film, takes a while for Rhys Meyers to get into his stride but once he does he is very convincing. Shows how manipulated Elvis was which isn't talked about much. Definitley worth the few euro.

It's hard to know where to begin with this DVD. The main casting is poor, Johnathan Rhys Myres is not good, he's like a bad Elvis impressionist, the lip curl is laughable. The actress playing Priscilla is like chipboard. However, Randy Quaid as Colonel Parker is very good and makes this watchable. br / br /The locations are very good as they use the real Graceland and the Audoban Drive house. But, to be honest, it doesn't show us anything we haven't seen before. br / br /Clearly, the script is pieced together from books about Elvis. There are scenes where you can clearly see they are copying pictures of the real thing. The romance with Ann-Margret is not explored in any depth, neither is the drugs, the depression, the bad movies and it ends with the worst lip synching you will ever see, as Elvis (Meyers) "sings" If I Can Dream. Do yourself a favour and buy the Comeback DVD, much better. br / br /Shame, this DVD does not seem to do Elvis any justice at all. br / br /No extras on the disc but comes with subtitles.
