Better than expected January 29, 2007 TamaraBB (Oxford UK) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was surprised at how enjoyable this film was in the context of poor reviews. Although it was slow-paced I thought the photography was very beautiful and the acting was spot-on. Although there was an element of fantasy to the whole idea this wasn't a problem for me - I knew it would be like that and still enjoyed watching the story unfold. I am glad I rented it and would recommend it for a bit of relaxation.
spices October 14, 2009 Drew (London) Not what I expexted of an Indian film was expecting a song every now and again not a bad story line
Don't Expect Beckham November 21, 2006 A. D. Hain (Birmingham UK) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have all Gurinder Chadha's productions and can watch them time and again. I have to say though, that without watching the interviews and featurette that appear on the DVD, I would be somewhat baffled by this film. The secret appears to be that it looks at integration from an American audience perspective. The British don't seem to need such a slow pace or the constant reminders of India's myth and magic.
br /I love the way that Chadha et al (her husband was the Director of record), tackle the subject of racial, religious and cultural integration. This film, perhaps, just doesn't get the message across in the same way as others.
br /That said, I do like the film - prepare to be intrigued more than amazed and certainly don't expect Beckham.
Tumeric for the Soul February 13, 2008 Gerry O'neill (Morrisville, NC United States) This is a pleasant little crossover movie which holds the attention of the viewer throughout.

br /It is probably easy for some to dismiss the film as lightweight fluff but if the intention is to bring Indian movies more into the mainstream of the American culture it will achieve it's purpose.
br /
br /It is a well crafted story from the makers of Bend It Like Beckham and I hope that the fans it generates will follow a lightly followed path into more of the movies that India produces.
br /
br /It is a very pleasant romantic story that tugs at the heartstrings but I must say I do yearn for something more substantial.
Indian chocolat anyone? October 23, 2009 PJ Rankine (Wallington, Surrey United Kingdom) Not for nothing was Aishwarya Rai once acclaimed as the most beautiful woman in the world and when her face fills the screen the eye will see nothing else. However beauty is not enough to save this Indian version of Chocolat where spices not confectionary weave their magic into people's lives. The setting of the spice bazaar is beguiling but Miss Rai's whispered conversations with the spices become irritating rather than magical and the story never does more than keep the viewer awake, just.
