5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Heartwarming   May 19, 2009
Jim-Jim (Dublin, Ireland)
What can be said about "Da"? Well, it'll have you laughing and crying, sometimes at the same time. This adaptation of the Hugh Leonard play is faithful and captures the essence of small town Ireland of the 1960s/1970s perfectly. And the da is quite possibly one of the all time great comedic roles, which Hughes nails perfectly. Marvelous.

A wonderfully poignant, intelligent and funny film. Based on the autobiographical writings and Award winning play by Hugh Leonard. A brilliant ensemble cast and a witty potrayal of family life in Ireland in the 1940s and 50s that doesn't fall into either 'The Quiet Man'-type 'Oirishness' or the misery of 'Angelas Ashes' br /Martin Sheen plays a sophisticated, successful and Americanised play-write who returns to Ireland for the funeral of his father,- 'Da'. His fathers ghost escorts him through the past and present and a host of characters, including his younger self, are resurrected. br /And through it all is Barnard Hughes potrayal(Oscar nominated, I think) of his irrepressible father,a man who has to be one of the most stupidest yet lovable characters in recent film history. br /
