5 out of 5 stars To hell with all the fuss!   August 14, 2006

Either love it or hate it, the most 'marmite' film of the last few years although the haters are mainly pretentios, podantic reveiwers who only concentrate on the politics of the film and not the movie itself. br / I love this movie and although it does purposefully tug at the heartstrings a tad too much, it takes a stone cold heart not to swell up with compassion for this film. The ensemble cast who are mainly actors that have not been on the radar for a while all do a fine job as if thier lives depended on it and the hispanic guy and Cheadle are paticularly superb. br / At first it is hard to ignore the blatent forcefulness of its core issues with the word 'black' used on countless occasions but this leads into many great storylines and you begin to realise just how important and integral the issue of racism is. All of us are forced into stereo-typing and prejudising at certain points of our live but that doesnt neccesarily mean someone is racist. I think this film is cleverer than people think and one should not be afraid to embrace the films deep core. Great acting, Great direction, wonderful cinematography and the scene in which Dillion's racist but caring cop rescues Thandie Newton from the car crash is just one of a number of mesmerising scenes that grip you and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up on end. A modern classic without dought.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of human relationships   September 2, 2006

As a facilitator who works in the arena of human relationships and raising awarenesss this film is a masterpeice. I regularly show it to my groups as it shows the complexity of human interaction and how issues in our personal lives play out in our daily interactions. For those that see it as as only a view on American society are missing out on it's deeper reflection of who we all are as humans. I have also found it's not the film that is powerful but more so, the emotions it generates within the viewer. I have regularly had students who had seen the film prior to my courses and they say that it was insignificant then watched after the course and seen a completely different film. When I ask what has changed, the answer is always their perception and therein lies a metaphore for life. What does it take to examine our perceptions? CRASH taps deeply into our intepretations of the world around us and can reveal more about who we are than we realise or some would like to admit. The true impact is not in the film but rather in the way we respond to it. Do we have the courage to look in the mirror? br /Watch this film and then examine your own values and beliefs and the impact they have (CRASH) on others, then you'll really get this film.

5 out of 5 stars It crashes home   June 2, 2008

A very good movie. When I first went to see it, I have to admit I didnt expect much just because the title seemed so bland. However as the story played out you can see how true to life the comments and reactions were. All the scenes were great but the memorable comment for me was the politician who was robbed by two black guys but doesnt want to lose the black vote so wants a photo of him pinning a medal on a black person to go out to show him as anti racist. Then when he suggests someone he is informed that the person is infact Iraqi. "Well he looks black!" is just hilarious. When told the Iraqis name is "Saddam" his reply was hilarious

5 out of 5 stars Crashing in for intimacy?   March 26, 2009

Don cheadle's little aside question above pokes fun at the modern society. Theres plenty of issues here, crime, assimilation in America, cultural clashes and of course racism all done superbly by the cast. Everyone should have a favourite thread in this movie, my own was the black director who is led to question his manhood and racial heritage culminating into a hugely ironic scene involving a younger black hoodlum in his car trying to rob him, and the police. br / br /I really enjoy movies with multiple plots intertwining together like pulp fiction. By the end of the movie a link has been established between most of the characters and how their race has effected how people treat them in their lives. The dialogue isn't Disney, its really modern and abrasive at times. br / br /Its just a pity most of the film is shot a nighttime but I guess great stories like these only come out when the sun goes down. I have'nt seen the directors cut so I plan on buying this, but from the standard version all I can say is its definitely a buy for any movie collectors like me out there. 9/10

5 out of 5 stars Lays Bare Realities Of Race   September 18, 2009
MLA (UK)
Race is an old fashioned word. It holds no scientific meaning at all. Still, we are all bound by it because we are all designed to protect "us" against "them". There can be no us without a them. What Crash does is expose this as an issue. Racism is bandied about far too often in meaningless discussion. Crash the film puts meaning to that thought process. The DVD extras are dreadful - avoid them because the discussion there is the same correct nonsense and if the viewer believes what is seen in the extras then the film itself is terrible. It is not, watch it and understand the film. br / br /We are not all individuals, we are representatives of some group or other. Most often that representation is class (wealth) but ethnicity, town vs country, nationality, and political beliefs are all part of the same continuum as are many other factors. What Crash does is bring some of them together in an interwoven series of stories set in a couple of days in Los Angeles. The characters are expertly drawn because they are not stereotypes. The young, politically conscious, wordsmith played by Ludacris is actually a gun toting criminal. Just because he is black, young, and from the hood does not mean he is innocent. He is not and his violence is part of the problem that leads to his being discriminated against. br / br /Sandra Bullock is cast in the role of posh wife and she is shown with many flaws. Those flaws though are borne out of a real fear. It might be too casual to remember but her character has a gun pointed at her face. Try being nice to everyone when that happens. She is the bored and lonely housewife of a politician who has tried to live in a perfect world but it is shallow and meaningless. She has what she aspired to but as in reality the highest divorce rates exist in affluent areas of the country, what she lacks is human contact and that makes her afraid. It turns out she was right the night she was car jacked. br / br /The hero character is played in a magnificent performance by Don Cheadle. Now I had Cheadle pigeon holed as a moron but his performance here is masterful. Cheadle's character has risen through the ranks of the police force not because he is black or manipulative unlike another side character, he has risen against the odds because he is intelligent and dedicated. Still, Cheadle's character which is the central hero is tested and found wanting against some unattainable goal because we all have to make compromises. His racist line about parking on front lawns is laugh out loud funny not just because it is incorrect but because the timing is comedy gold. br / br /What I found to be very unexpected was quite how moving the film is. The scenes involving Cheadle's character and his mother are as touching as any pathos-inducing epic. The reality of old age and mental dysfunction are forced out in the open here and Cheadle's stoic performance is truly moving. Equally the hard working Latino character just trying to make an honest living is an inspiring performance. Some claim to have cried at the scene with the little girl and the Persian man but frankly the scene where the Latino character gives his daughter a fairy story to keep her safe from harm is devastatingly emotional. br / br /Most of Thandie Newton's job is to look stunning and she achieves that admirably. Newton is so seductively beautiful that when she is molested by Matt Dillon's unpleasant cop, it is uncomfortable. Her character's husband is affected profoundly by that act but unlike every other character, these two do find unexpected redemption. br / br /Most characters are not redeemed. The fresh faced innocent that is Ryan Phillipe's character and Ludacris's young lackey are damaged worst of all. This is not a surprise given they are the youngest of the characters. Most of the time though the characterisation is drawn out magnificently. The revelatory format that sees layers of character built up and previous actions/words given greater context works well here. It is a character study of the highest order. It is not a statement that racism is bad, it is a statement that we judge each other because we have to. Crash does not ask why we judge. Crash asks what we should do about the fact we will judge each other. br /
