Amazon.co.uk Review The 1972 disaster hit IThe Poseidon Adventure/I was ripe for a big-budget CGI remake, and who better to helm it than thriller expert Wolfgang Petersen, director of IDas Boot/I and IThe Perfect Storm/I? It hardly matters that a TV movie remake (also based on Paul Gallico's original 1969 source novel) was made less than a year before, because Petersen's version is far more spectacular, with shocking digital effects, massive sets, amazing stunt-work and enough fire and water to fill five movies with challenging worst-case scenarios. Once again, the plot concerns the capsizing (by a massive "rogue wave") of a state-of-the-art luxury liner, and the struggle of a small group of survivors (including Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, and Richard Dreyfuss) to climb upwards, to the ship's hull, in their treacherous quest for a safe exit. Unfortunately, most of these characters are two-dimensional and under-developed (especially when compared to the 1972 film's all-star cast), and the unimaginative screenplay by Mark Protosevich (reportedly worked on by several uncredited writers) subjects them to a rote series of obstacles that grow increasingly routine and repetitious, not to mention contrived and illogical. Again, it hardly matters, because Petersen's handling of non-stop action is so slick and professional that iPoseidon/i gets by on sheer adrenaline. The capsizing scenes are nothing less than awesome, with some effects so real (and so horrifying) that younger and more sensitive viewers may need to look away. And while it lacks the engaging humanity of the 1972 version, IPoseidon/I is certainly never boring. Faint praise, perhaps, but you'll get your popcorn's worth of mindless entertainment.--IJeff Shannon/I

Oh i am Sorry... December 13, 2006 Andrew Kyle (Glasgow, Scotland) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
I'm sorry but on reading the reviews this thing is getting i feel the need to stand up and say something. Was anybody expecting it to be any more than a daft action film?? This movie is a silly explosive shouty sinky claustrophobic action masterpiece. For claustrophobic, just check the vent shaft bit...Josh Lucas, who previously showed his prowess in similarly stupid yet masterpiece-like Stealth, leads the way through a network of (upside down) pyrotechnic set pieces, accompanied by the excellent Kurt Russel. I just can't see the flaws in this film...but as you may have guessed i just adore my daft actioners. Simply don't think about the acting, or the character; switch off and enjoy the rollercoaster. Klaus Badelt batters out and insanely good orchestral score... So good...i think i'll go watch it again, right now, and yep, i'm still going to punch the air when Kurt shouts "You stay here you drown!" and still going to feel a tear in my eye at the end...
Entertaining thriller July 2, 2006 Kona (Emerald City) 17 out of 21 found this review helpful
It's New Year's Eve aboard the cruise ship Poseidon, and the revelers are celebrating in the ballroom, unaware that a "rogue wave" is headed their way. But first, we meet the unsuspecting partygoers: a father (Kurt Russell) and daughter (Emmy Rossum), a conceited gambler (Josh Lucas), a single mom and her small son, and a rich but depressed businessman (Richard Dreyfuss). The surprise wave turns the ship over and there are countless causalities, but who will survive the climb to the top, er, bottom?

br /Comparisons with the Irwin Allen original are natural, but they really are very different movies. The 1972 version was character-driven and we cared about the little band of survivors; special effects were limited to the upside-down roll of the ship. The new "Poseidon" is all about the CGI effects, and they are truly outstanding. The flipping of the ship is much more violent and realistic this time around, and it's just the start of the action. There are enough underwater scenes to have you holding your own breath as you are caught up in the excitement. We know almost nothing about the characters, but that didn't bother me as the star of the show is the special effects. The director maintains a high level of tension throughout the film; the story never lets up, and the pace is quick. We know many of the cast will survive, but we don't know who, and that keeps us involved. (I was surprised no one said, "Let's climb to the bottom of the ship and get out that way; you know, like they did in "The Poseidon Adventure!") Action fans will surely enjoy this non-stop thrill ride. Heartily recommended.
Another classic remade into another classic!!!! September 17, 2006 Mr. M 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Poseidon is a truly amazing disaster remake. It is fast, entertaining and the CGI is breathtaking. Just seeing the capsizing scene made me want to buy this on DVD!
br /It's New Year's Eve, and the passengers and crew on the luxury cruise liner, Poseidon, are celebrating. What they didn't have in mind was thata rogue wave was heading for Poseidon. When the wave makes impact with Poseidon, it cause the liner to capsize and become upside down. A group of people, which includes Kurt Russel, Josh Lucas and Richard Dreyfuss, turn to each other and try to find a way out together. On the way out of the upside down cruise, some people die in tragic ways. They get crushed in elevator shafts, get smacked by falling boilers and drown.
br /I'm not gonna tell you who dies as that just ruins it for you. Overall, buy this DVD otherwise you will miss a great film!
A Classic Remake October 10, 2006 Ronald Kinsella (England) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This film is brilliant. Having read numerous negative reviews upon its debute screening, I decided to give it a chance and so purchased a copy. When I watched it, I could not believe how beautiful and dramatic it was. The ship itself is like a gigantic floating Towering Inferno and is quite stunning - especially the disaster effects. The acting is super and I was gripped to my seat at the unpredictable outcome of the few struggling survivors. This film perfectly captures the desperate actions of men and women when faced with such horrors. I am hoping that the brilliant Wolfgang Petersen will now adapt the blockbuster movie, The Towering Inferno, into a modern remake because he has proved, to me at least, that he can pull it off with remarkable results.
Better than the original October 11, 2006 megamarble (South Yorks, UK) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Years ago as a boy i watched the original posiden adventure which i thought was excellent. I was surprised to watch at the cinema the remake and enjoy it very much. The tension in the movie was excellent and my wife did some serious squeezing of my hand while we watched the movie.

br /I don't understand why the critics are being so hard on it - i thought it was brilliant.
