Amazon.co.uk Review
Bearing absolutely no resemblance to the 1980s TV series that helped to propel Michael Mann into big-time filmmaking, iMiami Vice/i is the kind of serious, and seriously stylish, crime drama that Mann does better than anyone else. As written by Mann himself, this undercover sting thriller doesn't reach the peak intensity of Mann's 1995 classic iHeat/i, and it lacks the tight, nail-biting suspense of iCollateral/i, but that doesn't mean it doesn't occasionally pack a wallop. As Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs (respectively), Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx don't have to do much but mumble their plot-thickening dialogue and look ultra-cool in the casual cop attire, and their partnership is rather lifeless on screen (perhaps owing to the fact that this was a troubled production, with an actual shooting that occurred during filming, and Foxx's refusal to risk his life on dangerous locations in South America). But once Mann shifts into high gear with a plot to foil a powerful drug kingpin (Luis Tosar) and his ruthless middle-man (John Ortiz), iVice/i pays off with the kind of smart, realistic action that Mann's fans have come to expect. With Chinese superstar Gong Li as Crockett's love interest on the wrong side of the law, iMiami Vice/i covers territory that's a little too familiar, and one suspects Mann's screenplay might've been punched up with a polish or two. Still, this is an above-average crime thriller that demands and rewards close attention, with a climactic shoot-out that's pure Mann, worthy of the brooding drama that precedes it. i--Jeff Shannon/i

5 out of 5 stars Stunning - visual story for persons capable of reading film - if you need exposition to explain the plot, don't bother   October 5, 2008

Stunning film making from Michael Mann. I have discussed with others and this film is going to be one you love or hate - I was the only one in 5 people or so who loved it so be wary. br / br /The film opens in a deliberately disorientating fashion - it initially appears to be showing us a police exercise in a night club but almost immediately pulls us out as an informant telephones Crockett Tubbs to report the trouble he is in. This draws the two into a drugs tale that is told through visuals and whilst complex and stimulating is not complicated. Hence my confusion at the viewers moaning that they did not understand it and who want everything laid out on a plate for them and presumably to switch their brains off when watching a film. If you want to be challenged get this and enjoy, otherwise go and buy something that shows you the plot, explains it and then explains it again. br / br /Stylistically the film appears to be documentary hand held in nature but this is deceptive - look closer and note the stylism in the opening sequence through the lack of car sounds when the white range rovers drive up to the night club. Clearly there is an intelligence in the direction that requires analysis by the viewer to understand the intentions of the film maker. Several viewings will be required to get to grips with this and serious film theory thought on meanings within the meanings. If you are not prepared to spend some time on this film then don't bother. br / br /For the more action orientated fans there is a stunningly filmed sequence in a trailer park that demonstrates the type of talent that Mann brought to Heat and Manhunter. br / br /Maybe it would help you in choosing to buy by knowing I never watched the TV series. Maybe if you did not either then you will find a film of great interest here. Hopefully this short set of notes will help your decision on whether to buy or not.

5 out of 5 stars Miami Vice done well, Citizen Kane it is not!   June 23, 2008

What I like about this movie; everything! br / br /The style is great, the clothes, cars/ go fast boats, cinematography, a soundtrack to die for... br / br /The 4 main characters work superbly as a team and are completely convincing, Naomie Harris praised in Mann's commentary for nailing the accent and quite rightly - she is spot-on. Elizabeth Rodriguez plays it mean and you would not want to upset her (unless you want a round at 2700' per second fired into your brain!), probably best buy her a drink. br /Farrell and Foxx are effortlessly good. br / br /The opening (theatrical cut) in the nightclub sets the mood, Linkin Park's 'Numb' segued into a great reworking of a Nina Simone vocal. br / br /After the two leads going undercover comes the start of the 'boring' Gong Li/ Colin Farrell romance. This is central to the plot and the ending. br /I love the moment they take off in the speedboat to the heart wrenching vocals of Patti LaBelle singing Moby's 'One of these mornings'. It also portrays the gentle side of Crockett's character. br / br /There are the usual Michael Mann excellently constructed setpieces, mainly shoot outs, the trailer park being a highlight of restraint. br / br /It is not a 'acting for oscars' film and is better judged on what it sets out to do, entertain and update the series , which it does and then some. br / br /The u.s. hd-dvd here is the way to go, if you have the necessary drives and region 1 capable hardware, as you get the directors extended version in 1080p high-def and the theatrical version in standard definition on the other side of this 'combo' disc. Either way it looks and sounds great.

5 out of 5 stars What did you expect?   July 6, 2008

I love this film; call it anything other than Miami Vice, and change the leads names from Crockett and Tubbs to anything else, and it would have got a better reception. br / br /Having said that, it is an almost perfect example of cinematic form. Seamless and beautifully edited, the story is taken from old sources but is updated well from its origins. br / br /Give it five or six years, and then a new audience will see this film for what it really is; not some cheesy spin-off of a much-loved TV series but a real highlight from a quality director. I love it. br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Girls you'll thank your fella for making you watch this!   September 2, 2006

Left the cinema desperate for this to come out on DVD so I can own it. Ignore what the critics say and all the want-to-be critics, accept this film for what it is - fantastic entertainment. Beautiful scenery, heart tugging story line, plenty of eye-candy (mainly for the girls), great soundtrack, shockingly realistic sounds of gunfire (not often heard in the cinema), all go to make a film that stays with you for days. For those girls who never really thought of Colin Farrell as pin-up potential, standby to have your mind changed, as he is hot, hot, hot as Sonny Crockett. Jamie Foxx is uber-cool as Ricardo Tubbs so there's always something or body to look at. br / br /There are a couple of gory bits but they only seemed to raise laughter in the cinema audience and they are very quick. Just a clue, they happen in the major shooting scenes so look away when they open fire!

5 out of 5 stars underrated opulence   November 13, 2006

This film is so underrated by the press that it has, in part, led me to writing many encouraging reviews for it. As the remake of a groundbreaking 1980s series, I naturally assume that a large portion of the criticism was directed at the picture because so many original elements were discarded.Yet that is entirely the point here, Miami vice:the motion picture is such a different beast to the series which bor e that name they almost exist on other planes, bar the infrequent reference of course. br /Micheal Mann has been a favourite director with both audiences and film critics alike for some time now, and one of the first aspects that springs to mind in his movies is always how beautiful they always look. This feature is no different and is shot on a similar digital camera to the one used in 'collateral'- brimming with shaded neon, absolutely the best filmed movie i've seen in a long time. br /Just as well, then, that the screenplay and the action sequences measure up.Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx glide into the roles of crockett and tubbs with ease, playing them as straight laced serious undercover cops. The plot is specific, though hardly of 'the usual suspects' style, with the partners going into deep cover to infiltrate a venomous arms dealer. This transpires as good an excuse as any to make use of such locations as Haiti and Cuba. Support is notable also in the form of asian actress Gong Li as crocketts sometimes lover Isabella, and Ciaran Hinds is an FBI suit sending the men into their dangerous mission.I dont like spoiling movies I love for people that havent seen them, so I am not going to emphasise plot details.Suffice to say there are shootouts so well played out that they equal the bank heist scene in 'Heat', again with the added 'realism' factor in place. br /Not the bad boys-esque slick blockbuster the trailers hinted at, this is a firm adult drama which might explain its underwhelming box office.Yet I heartily recommend it as one of the movies of the year, along with Martin Scorsese's 'the Departed' and 'the Proposition.'
