5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!   September 27, 2006

I saw this whilst flying back from Thailand at the weekend. I laughed until I cried - one of the funniest films I've seen for a long, long time. Even Victor Meldrew would surely be amused!!

5 out of 5 stars NACHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!   August 22, 2006

Nacho (Jack Black) is a young man who was raised in a monastery in Mexico and now works there as the cook. Fueled by his passion for wrestling, he dons a mask and cape and picks up a partner to compete in a local Lucha Libre tournament to try for the $200 prize so he can buy better food for the kids and achieve respect. When a new nun, Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera), arrives at the monastery, he tries to win her adoration as well while attempting to prove that being a Luchador isn't a sin and win the grand prize at a battle royal tournament so he can buy a bus for the kids. br / br /When I heard that Jack Black would be playing a Mexican Friar who moonlighted as a wrestler in Jared Hess' next project I got very happy, because I knew this would be a funny movie. The trailers for the film advertised exactly what this movie was, and that was pure physical comedy. The story is about Nacho, a Friar who wants the fame and fortune that is associated with being a luchadore after living the same old life over and over each day. He then realizes that this journey to become a professional wrestler is not for himself but for the orphans whom he looks after and cooks for at the orphanage. The movie is basically Jack Black running around with his shirt off for an hour and a half while sporting a fake mustache and a funny Mexican accent. While the majority of the comedy in the film is physical, there are some hilarious lines in the film that are delivered with the right spunk by Black. There are also some great physical scenes in and outside the ring that shows just how great of a physical comedian Black is. The movie is incredibly stupid, but it's also so very funny. If you enjoy pure silly comedy executed perfectly then this movie is just the thing you need. Don't expect another Napoleon Dynamite because this is not a reincarnation of Hess' previous cult hit. He uses the same style of shooting the movie though by using a lot of wide symmetrically balanced shots. Personally, I laughed harder at this then I did with Napoleon Dynamite. Napoleon Dynamite had some great one-liners, but Nacho Libre overall is just plain silly fun. Don't take the film seriously at all, just sit back and laugh. It's a hilarious and outstanding movie, if you liked School of Rock, you'll love this, it has the same passion for comedy.

5 out of 5 stars A film that took me back to Iraq   December 9, 2006

I first saw this film on a plane that was taking me back off leave to Iraq. I was understandbly not too happy to be going back there and not in the best of moods. I must admit that I had never heard of Jack Black until this film and the first few minutes made me think of removing my headphones and going to sleep. I am very glad that I didnt as within 5 minutes I was laughing out loud and others on the flight were beginning to watch too. br / br /It is slapstick but in a very well made sort of way. The script is also excellent and whilst, along with the other reviewers here, I admit that it will not win an oscar, it is plainly and simply very funny. br / br /It certainly gets my recommendation and for those who have not been exposed to Jack Black I heartily give it a big thumbs up.

br /This film is definately worth seeing, its funny, original and very cleverly written. Jack Black pulls out all the stops and produces (in my opinion) his best performance to date.

5 out of 5 stars I've been thinking about your salvation and stuff...   August 27, 2007

I cannot believe how this film has been slated! I love Jack Black but due to the pure bizarre-ness of the trailers for Nacho Libre i didn't know what to expect when i watched it. Nacho Libre is absolutely hilarious! For those who don't get the whole Mexican accent thing, the genius lies in the fact Nacho is saying such English things (let's get down to the nitty gritty, anyone??!) but with a not too bad Mexican accent. br / br /I have watched this on numerous occasions with all different groups of friends and we've all killed ourselves laughing at the classic one liners and pure daftness of the being that is Jack Black. He gets complete reign in this film, even managing to squeeze in a couple of very amusing ditties. My favourite is the Ramses song! br / br /Hector Jimenez (Steven "Esqueleto") is great too and he gets some great lines also (I only believe sciieeence). br / br /All round a very good comedy, well put together and with too many one liners to even begin with. All the characters are well developed and fun to watch. I give it two thumbs up!
