Top British Film September 13, 2006 S J Buck (Kent, UK) 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
This film, together with Get Carter (the original) are the two finest British crime/gangster films you can get.
br /
br /Bob Hoskins gives his best ever performance as Harold Shand a cockney gangster whos trying to do a deal with an American over the (as was then) wasteland of docklands. Unfortunately while he's in the states one of his gang has upset some rather nasty people. Upon his return things start to go badly wrong.
br /
br /This film is full of great scenes - perhaps most memorably when the men Harold suspects are trying to muscle in on him are brought in hanging upsidedown from meathooks - Harold has a quiet word:
br /
br /"For more than ten years there's been peace - everyone to his own patch. We've all had it sweet. I've done every single one of you favours in the past - I've put money in all your pockets. I've treated you well, even when you was out of order, right? Well now there's been an eruption. It's like f**kin' Belfast on a bad night. One of my closest friends is lyin' out there in the freezer. And believe me, all of you, nobody goes home until I find out who done it, and why".
br /
br /Its all marvellously done, and the ending is very clever indeed - you will never forget it once you've seen it. The whole film is complimented by excellent music composed by Francis Monkman (who played with Curved Air and Sky).
br /
br /Helen Mirren gives a great peformance as Harolds wife/girlfriend. The cast includes quite a few familiar faces such as Eddie Constantine and P H Moriarty as 'Razors'. The most noteable is a small role for the as then unknown Pierce Brosnan.
br /
br /This film is also an interesting piece of British history as you can see docklands as it was before before Canary Wharf existed.
br /
br /If you haven't already seen this, then you've missed a really cracking film.
A Great Gangester Film. May 7, 2007 B Loughrey (Dublin Ireland) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have just bought the 25th Anniversary box set of the Long Good Friday and have enjoyed watching every minute of this super 80's London gangester tale. What can you say about Bob Hoskins performance, in a word Outstanding. This Box Set was beautifully packaged, incorporating the main feature and a making of documentary film and interviews with the cast as well as an Audio CD of the theme music from the film all bound in a metal case, excellent value for a must have film for your collection.
Great movie, however... July 21, 2007 mcbexx 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
... despite being mentioned in the user reviews, this edition does NOT (or at least not anymore) include the Soundtrack CD as of July 2007.
br /
br /I do not regret ordering the title, but the user comment about the soundtrack finally nudged me into the purchase, and in this aspect, I have been disappointed.
br /
br /Edit: It appears I am an idiot.
br /The Soundtrack CD is in the back of the front lid, hidden behind a leaflet.
br /
br /Suggestion to Amazon: Please update the product description to 2 DVDs + 1 CD.
Best British Gangster Film EVER January 6, 2008 Curtis Slamdog 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
At the time of writing this, I've just been thoroughly impressed by a rare British TV screening of 'The Long Good Friday', a gripping, bleak and uncompromising study of a supposedly untouchable underworld kingpin whose organization collapses around his ears when a mystery adversary begins murdering his colleagues and blowing up his favourite haunts. Bob Hoskins is just incredible in this film. His performance sears the screen with its burning intensity. His character is undoubtedly a vile individual, but Hoskins employs so much depth and subtlety in his portrayal we actually find ourselves caring for him. The much-remarked-on final sequence is an absolute tour-de-force that takes your breath away. Doubtful whether any current director (let alone any current actor) would have the guts to even attempt something like that. Hoskins makes it all look so easy, the mark of a true professional. Be warned, however, that this is not a film for the faint-hearted, and the squeamish will most certainly wince more than once. The direction, editing, photography, soundtrack and acting are all top-notch, displaying a rare degree of outright quality that the British film industry rarely seems able to muster, for one reason or another. There's also some degree of fun to be had from spotting the familiar faces in the supporting cast - 'Charlie Fairhead' from Casualty, 'Denzil' from Only Fools and Horses, 'Terry' from Fawlty Towers, a couple of the sadistic warders from Alan Clarke's brutal borstal flick 'Scum' and a young Gillian Taylforth of Eastenders fame. I have one final comment to make regarding this movie. Guy Ritchie should be forced to watch this at least fifteen times in a row, in the vain hope that it teaches him something about the genre he idolizes but seems unable to make a decent job of depicting. Watch and learn, all you young 'mockney' pretenders, this film is the work of the masters.
