Hankies at the ready: the young and pretty ensemble cast of IThe Last Kiss/I are about to find out, all too realistically, that grown-up relationships are hard work. Based on an Italian film, IThe Last Kiss/I follows a young couple, their friends and their family as they each struggle to come to terms with their lives and relationships--a difficulty compounded by the realisation that they may already have enjoyed their final first kiss. Hence the title. P The excellent soundtrack, hand selected by star Zach Braff, complements the drama perfectly. It also evokes 2004's IGarden State/I, though fans looking for a recreation of that movie's naïve charm may be disappointed: IThe Last Kiss/I is rather more downbeat. It's also more adult; the sheen of youthful optimism has been rubbed off, replaced with a painful observation that sometimes, life just isn't easy. P Zach Braff-completists should make sure their IScrubs/I collections are up to date before picking this up; his character in IThe Last Kiss/I isn't as cute and cuddly as his previous incarnations. And be warned if you're looking for a light and fluffy comedy: despite appearances, this is not the movie for you. It's worth a look, but only once you've had a chance to stock up on tissues.--ISarah Dobbs/I

5 out of 5 stars A minor masterpiece of character study   October 4, 2007

While Paul Haggis (screenwriter) is best known now for Crash, Million Dollar Baby and other high profile movies, amongst all that came this adaptation of an Italian film - and what a gem it has turned out to be. This will most definitely not be to everyone's taste.. it is not the rom-com the advertising would have you believe. It is a study of relationships. br /Zach Braff plays the 30 year old in a relationship with a woman he adores (Jacinda Barrett). She has just become pregnant. This faces him with the realisation that life has no surprises left and he is thrown into angst. At this point, a young beautiful and sexual woman (Rachel Bilson - a revelation) comes into his life, tempting him to take the easy route away from growing up. Alongside this we have his friends, in different stages of relationships all facing tough choices - one, Casey Affleck, has a hen-pecking wife with young child, and he is trying to decide whether to stay or not. Another is a serial womaniser facing reality that it might be time to change his ways, and another is recovering from a painful break up. br /Crucially, the performances are all absolutely perfect - Zach Braff proves he can do something a little deeper, and Jacinda Barrett is absolutely brilliant. Every scene has a feeling of truth - you never feel like you are catching them playing at acting. Also giving the perspective from the other end of a marriage are Tom Wilkinson and Blythe Danner, who after 30 years together are having their own issues. br /All the stories reflect the mistakes and false starts life brings into relationships, and how they can force us into a more mature place on the other side of those mistakes. br /It's a talking heads movie, which does not look for any neat solution and traditional boy gets girl scenarios.. but it is a heartfelt look at real life relationships, and anyone over 30 should be able to find at least one of the characters they can relate to. br /Highly recommended for those that like a talking head intelligent relationship movie that stays as far away from schmalz as possible. br /

5 out of 5 stars A movie with soul...not just another chick flick   January 8, 2007

When first deciding to see this film, I admit I was swayed by the idea of Zach Braff returning to the big screen after Garden State, (a movie I adore)and the excellent cast and soundtrack. br / br /I will state now, this film is not just a chick flick, it deals with real issues. The dialogue is beautiful, soft and caring in some places, deep and thoughful, and hilariously funny in others. It manages to explore the nuances and problems within a variety of relationships whilst not detracting from the storyline. br / br /It could easily have gone the other way, been a simplistic story about a guy who's tempted to cheat on his pregnant girlfriend, and all his friend's similar stories about the way life seems after thirty. The things that changed it? Zach Braff and (the completely underrated) Casey Affleck. They gave the movie meaning, heart, and sincerity. br / br /Do not watch this film if you just want the guy and the girl to get together, everything's fine and they kiss at the end. Yes, this is a story about love. But it's also about friendship, soul and the end of the road. It's a film with a soul. br / br /Absolutely love this film, maybe even more than Garden State. Would suggest it to anyone who likes their jokes sarcastic, their dialogue meaningful and their sountracks of the indie-rock persuasion. br / br /(......)

5 out of 5 stars Marketed Wrongly   March 12, 2007

The problem with this film is that because it stars Zach Braff everyone assumes its a comedy. Also it was marketed as a comedy. By no means is this a comedy, don't even bother to watch it if you want a light hearted film. I found this film moving, and I simply cannot understand the bad reviews its getting. The acting is superb, and I found the characters and situations very real. br /Probably the themes are more suited to an older audience who have experienced love, and life crises. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and I can't wait to see Zach Braff take more roles like this.

5 out of 5 stars Zach Braff Not So Naff...   May 10, 2007

As I sit listening to The Last Kiss soundtrack (which is excellent by the way) I still can't put my finger on why this is such a great film. Maybe it's because it deals with issues that are so relative to many people in todays world - men having an early middle life crisis at 30, knowing when the right time is to have children, remembering that the grass is not always greener....or maybe because I wasn't expecting to be blown away be such strong portrayals of real characters that everyone can relate to in some way. br / Anyone interested in films about real people with real problems should watch this....oh and if you always thought Zach Braff was a bit naff - you should definitely watch it. He's fantastic!

I felt the need to post a review for this film. First things first . . . this film is not a rom-com. It is a very honest study about of the nature of relationships, temptation and life in general. As long as you know this before you watch it, you will be greatly rewarded. For this is a hidden gem of a film, marketed at completely the wrong audience, but which deserves enormous praise. The acting, story and cinematography are all amazing. It's not often I can say that about a film. I highly recommend it! But as I said already, it is not a rom-com!! It is a serious drama that will leave you thinking about previous relationships or even one that you may already be in. If you watch this (and you should) be prepared for some awkward conversations with your partner if you are going through a rough patch. A superb film!!
