Mcgovern (Dublin, Ireland) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful Having recently returned from New York, I was lucky enough to come across this in one of the outlet malls and snatched it up quicker than you can say "kryptonite". br / br /There are 14 discs in the box-set I bought and as far as I can tell (I don't have the set in front of me at the moment), the extra disc is Bryan Singer's Video Blogs from the set of Superman Returns. br / br /-----------------CAUTION, SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!----------------------------- br / br /I have watched the Richard Donner version of Superman II and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is quite a different film from the theatrical release, in that I found the cutting of the film to be quite comic-book like.......short scenes, cut from the three villians to a scene with Lois and Clark and then back to General Zod and his cohorts. I enjoyed the continuity between I II (one of the nukes from the end of the original film was the reason that the villians escaped the Phantom Zone.......and even the effects of their escape looked a lot better than the original movie). Also the explanation as to why Superman turns back time at the end of II, is insightful.....though I can't understand how they intended to finish the first film, if they intended to use the "turns back time" at the end of II instead! (maybe it will be expalined when I watch the first film again?????) br / br /I'm not going to give away any more of the "plot" (even though it hasn't changed that dramatically), but I will say that the additional scenes with Marlon Brando and Christopher Reeves are excelent! br / br /The "re-making" documentary is very insightful. I didn't realise that both Superman I II were filmed at the same time and the fact that Richard Donner and the crew that restored the new version had to use the Margot Kidder / Christopher Reeves Screen-test in the actual movie (where she shoots clark to prove he is Superman) br / br /I cannot wait to see the rest of the movies (yes, even the dire Superman IV!!!! - as bad as it was, it's worth a bit more that use as a coaster!!) and the copious hours of extra material. br / br /This is a must buy for anyone that has seen and loved the original movies.........like me as a young boy, yearning to fly (but with out his pants outside his tights!!!). br / br /It's well worth the money and I reckon would be cheap at twice the price.(that's not an invitation for marketers to increase the price though....tee hee!) Steel (England) 28 out of 30 found this review helpful This is probably THE box set of the year, in my opinion. br /This is HUGE - it has 13 discs. br /Superman the Movie has 4 discs br /Superman 2 has 3 discs br /Superman 3 has 1 disc br /Superman 4 has 1 disc br /Superman Returns (this years' film starring Brandon Routh) has 2 discs br /Plus there are two bonus discs.One has the documentary called 'Look Up in the Sky - the Amazing Superman Story'.And the Final disc contains 'You will Believe', the Mythology of Superman,Heart of a Hero (remembering Christopher Reeve),the adventures of SuperPup(1958 tv pilot),Super-rabbit(1943 WB cartoon),Stupor Duck (1956 WB Cartoon). br / br /There are so many features in the first 4 Christopher Reeve films that it is almost impossible to list them all here.But here goes; br /Superman the Movie has teaser trailers,theatrical trailers,commentary by the director, and a music only track, screen tests , deleted scenes, and i believe the Fleischer cartoons which are meant to be awesome. br / br /The real gem is Superman 2.As one of the other reviewers has said the extras on here are extras we have never seen before.It shows the Richard Donner cut of the film.He was removed from the film despite shooting most of the footage, and the story was changed. I personally can't wait to see this as I knew the directorial disputes had occurred.I am not expecting a totally new film but i am very curious to see how Donner's vision differed from the released version.There are also making of's,deleted scenes and trailers here too. br / br /Superman 3 has deleted scenes, a making of and trailers. br / br /Superman 4 has deleted scenes and trailers. br / br /Superman Returns has bucket-loads of extras too.Deleted scenes (though apparently not the return to krypton section - which is a shame),making of's , trailers. br / br /This is amazing when you think that this entire collection is working out at less than £5 per disc!! br /I am looking forward to the delivery from Amazon on this sets' release date.I have always loved these films, and to see all the extras included and to see the care that people have taken in making the most of an amazing set of films, is going to be the highlight of the year for me in terms of dvd box sets. br /If you have anyone who likes Superman comics, or loves the films then this is the set to buy them this year for Christmas.Great value for the 5 films alone, but with the extras packed in too this is just an awesome set. br / Now that's what I call a SPECIAL edition December 6, 2006 M. And here I am, spending a great wodge of cash on myself by purchasing this magnificent box set; I apologise to all my relatives, but it had to be done. For anyone with a passing interest in the Man of Steel, you really couldn't ask for more than you've been given here. br / br /Even if you bought the four-disk blue box set from a while ago, there's still more than enough here to justify the extra outlay. Thirteen DVDs, all housed in a resplendent silver metal case and with the accompanying booklet designed to resemble an issue of The Daily Planet. Fanboy heaven. br / br /The first film, which remains one of the greatest superhero adaptations in cinema history, takes up a whopping four discs. You'll find the original version you probably saw in cinemas as a child, the expanded version from 2000, which includes a welcome number of extra scenes on Krypton at the beginning, plus two discs of extras. There are the documentaries, screen tests, etc. which appeared with the film in the blue box set, plus a 70s 'making of' TV show, some vintage cartoons and even a 1951 Superman movie starring George Reeves. The cartoons and film may only be of passing interest, but they still make interesting viewing. br / br /The 1980 sequel, which I know many fans regard as highly as the original, if not more highly, for its darker, more serious tone, gets three discs to itself. There's the cinema version of the film, another 'making of' and a TV special celebrating 50 years of Superman, plus more vintage cartoons. Of most interest, however, is the brand new Richard Donner version of Superman II. Donner was the director of the first film of course, and much of the sequel was shot at the same time as the original. Unfortunately Donner fell out with the producers and Richard Lester was brought in to replace him, mixing some of Donner's footage with new material. Lester did a good job, but here we get to see the film as Donner would have made it, using material which was removed from the cinema release, and it makes for quite a different experience - a very good one, at that. Several famous scenes such as Niagra Falls and the whole Eiffel Tower bomb sequence are replaced with Donner's material; it makes for fascinating viewing and may even become the accepted version of the second film amongst fans. br / br /The thrid and fourth films are controversial, to say the least. III was an attempt to inject extra humour into the series, and although it isn't a terrible film by any means, it just doesn't really work as it should. Richard Pryor was a great comedian, but here he is shackled by appearing in a PG-rated film, and the slapstick tone means it's difficult to feel much tension during the final confrontation with the monstrous 'super computer'. It is quite amusing to see the 1983 computers and technology though, especially the Atari video game! Superman IV has a well-intentioned anti-nuclear theme, but to be absolutely frank it's a complete disaster. Made on a shoestring budget (notoriously, Milton Keynes doubles as Metropolis) the effects are terrible and the script is even worse. You probably won't want to watch it more than once. Both these films come on one disk with a few barebones extras like trailers and deleted scenes. br / br /Next, there's Superman Returns. Personally, I enjoyed this film. I know many of us have a special affection for Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder and Gene Hackman in the roles of Clark, Lois and Lex, so it is quite jarring to see new (and much younger!) actors in these roles, but I think they all did a decent job, and the film is definitely a visual treat. It follows the tone of Superman II, with more drama and romance than the other entries, and perhaps it does tend to drag a little at times, but overall I thought Bryan Singer did a good job and I hope he makes a second. You basically get the same extras as with the 2-disc edition of 'Returns' available seperately, which include a long documentary detailing the making of the film in incredible detail. br / br /The final two discs contain yet more extras. First there's 'Look, Up In The Sky!', a brand new full-length documentary about the history of Superman in comic, TV and film form. The final DVD contains 'You Will Believe', which concentrates on the highs and lows of Superman's cinematic adventures. There's also a moving tribute to Christopher Reeve, who proved to be as much of a hero in real life as he was on screen, a piece about the beliefs, myths and legends that went into the development of Superman as a character and finally a few oddballs from the archives; a Super Pup TV show and three classic cartoon Superman spoofs. br / br /The word 'exhaustive' could have been invented with this set in mind. If that lot doesn't satisfy you, nothing will. It's an absolutely terrific set and well worth the price. I only wish someone would produce a similarly impressive set for the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies. Superman II - at last! November 14, 2006 JOHN R. ROSE (York, England) 13 out of 15 found this review helpful The real treasure of this set is the Richard Donner cut of Superman II. The Richard Donner Cut is essentially be a completely new film. As much as half of the film contains never-before seen material filmed by Donner, including 15 minutes of restored Marlon Brando scenes as Superman's father Jor-El as well as numerous new Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder scenes. So all four christopher reeve films, Superman returns and two recuts of the first two reeves films - what more could you want. br / br /Whats more with this Huge Box set you get a free drinks coaster. Well, that's what I'll be using the Superman IV DVD for! I'll not review the films themselves, or the DVDs themselves, as there are many reviews on the individual releases already available. Suffice it to say I love these films and ever since I saw Superman: The Movie back when I was a child, I've loved these films, right up to and including seeing Superman Returns. br / br /What I want to talk about is what you get in this package in addition to what you would get if you were to purchase the releases separately. First of all, you get two extra films, as you can't buy Superman III or Superman IV: The Quest for Peace individually. They're given nice special edition treatments, with documentaries, commentaries, trailers, and an impressive amount of deleted scenes! The films themselves aren't bad. I've personally always enjoyed Superman III, and the scene where Superman confronts his dark alter-ego in the scrap yard is classic Superman material! Superman IV is definitely the weakest film in the whole collection, but in its favour, it's short and it has some amusing moments, and there's an interesting moment where Superman appears to contract some sort of poison from nuclear-man and almost dies. br / br /As well as these two films, you get 2 extra discs unavailable anywhere else. The first is the excellent feature-length documentary "Look, Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman" which takes a thorough look at the different incarnations of Superman, including the recent Brandon Routh entry, Dean Cain and George Reeves' popular turns as the hero on TV, various cartoon versions, and of course Christopher Reeve's defining and legendary performance of the character. The second documentary is "You Will Believe: The Cinematic Saga of Superman" which looks in great depth at the production of the Salkind films (I-IV). Both these discs also have a number of extra features to complete this 13-disc set, ensuring that there's not much you're missing out on from the world of Superman. It should be noted that the region 1 version of this set contains a 14th disc devoted to Bryan Singer's video journal, which gives a more in-depth look at the production process of Superman Returns. br / br /To complete this review of this wonderful set, it's worth talking about the packaging of the set itself. It's all housed in a minimalist yet beautiful tin with the silver 'S' logo embossed on the front. Opening it reveals the casing, housed in a wonderful lenticular sleeve which creates the illusion of Superman flying up into the sky through the 'S' logo. An issue of the Daily Planet is included, with each page devoted to a disc of the set to cover scene allocations and a description of extra features on each disc. br / br /All in all, a wonderful package. Whether you want to watch George Reeves' encounter with the Mole-Men, Christopher Reeve save Margot Kidder from the falling helicopter, or Brandon Routh hurl an entire continent into outer space, it's all here and presented in an absolutely stunning way!
