| Customer Reviews: The Best Australian Film I Have Seen, Excellent. January 18, 2008 N. Thompson (Hull, England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you like your crime movies, especially with a tint of humour, you'll love this. Eric Banna players real life criminal Mark Brandon 'Copper' Read. An ex-conn turned vigilante .... or at least thats how he protrays himself, but his own words "You know me, I never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn". Eric Banna is sensational as Chopper. He is completely believable in the role and captures the humour of Chopper perfectly aswell as his menace too. The supporting cast are also top quality and all are completely believable in their respected roles. The film starts off with Chopper in prison, leading a group of inmates in a prison gang war. Chopper's gang however betrays him and tries to kill him. With no allies left Chopper cuts off his own ears to get him out of that part of prison. Later, upon release from jail, Choppers story continues with a one man war against the criminal underworld. This is a very funny movie and at times its also a fascinating look at one of the crazy characters of the Australian underworld. I love my crime movies and this is one of the best.
surprisingly funny May 14, 2008 Ms. F. I. Macdonald (uk) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
having heard so much about the infamous 'chopper' i decided i had to watch the film to see how his crimes were commmited, and i found it a generally humourous and incrediably gory film. It's worth taking a look at, but the fact that chopper appears to have a gruesomely high pain barrier is rather disgusting!!
The difference between insanity and genius is measured by success November 10, 2007 LXIX (scotland) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Based on the life of the notorious Australian criminal turned novelist and celebrity, Mark 'Chopper' Read, this is a dark tale. There are no dull moments in this film and to say that the character of Chopper has a propensity for violence would be an understatement.
br /
br /A lot of countries have a 'Chopper' equivalent - a reformed criminal and celebrity through the arts (e.g. Jimmy Boyle in Scotland - watch the DVD "A Sense of Freedom" if this is your thing) and many of the public seem to enjoy reading and watching films about people who do (or did) the things that others only think of.
br /
br /Although you will spend 90 minutes in the company of a central character who is highly unpredictable and complex (with a behavioural pattern of dispensing extreme violence with extreme flippancy), in typical Australian fashion this film also has its comical moments, mainly in the form of Chopper's wit.
br /
br /This movie also demonstrates Eric Bana's depth of acting ability (it's hard to imagine that is the same guy who was the smooth hero in Troy).
br /
br /There is an old saying that truth is often stranger than fiction - well, when it comes to Chopper you'd think they couldn't make it up.
A short sharp film May 11, 2008 S J Buck (Kent, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a well-made biopic of Mark 'Chopper' Read, an extremely violent Australian criminal who has gone on to become a successful writer. The story, although based on 'Choppers' own books has been spiced up for the film, so some of the events depicted may never have happened. That said its an adrenalin filled film which never lets up in its intensity, which is mostly down to a superb performance by Eric Bana. His portrayal captures the schzoid nature of 'Chopper' who after shooting you, was just as likely to take you to a hospital.
br /
br /With its relentless nature and short running time of only 90 minutes you'll find that the film is over very quickly. I felt the film could have continued a little longer (very unusual for me) so for me the ending was a bit of dissappointment. However I have few other criticisms and so long as you don't mind violence and drug use portrayed realistically in films you'll enjoy this. Its no masterpiece, but its as good, and in many cases better, than a lot of equivalent Hollywood films.
