enthralling entertaining: here is Burton's way of filmmaking... August 10, 2007 H. Serkan SILAHSOR (Ankara, TURKEY) 35 out of 35 found this review helpful
Tim Burton is master of creating foreboding moods, using unique visual techniques and telling strange tales occuring in fantastic worlds mostly inspired by his childhood nightmares and dreams. The result: visually stunning movies with own realities. "Sleepy Hollow" is no exception at all. I reckon this is his homage not only to Washington Irving, but also to great Hammer Films of his youth.
br /
br /In terms of technical aspects, "Sleepy Hollow" is Burton's most visually spectacular and seamlessly crafted picture so far. Thanks to Emmanuel Lubezki, the cinematography is dazzling. The colors are wonderfully washed out that at first glance it gives the impression that the film was shot black white. Along with the intensive use of blue filters; moody, dark gray, brown and overcast landscape gives a surreal gothic feel to the picture, making viewers think that the sun never shows its face on Sleepy Hollow.
br /
br /The art direction is impressive too. Sets are masterfully designed from the foggy town to creepy woods. It's hard to believe that 90 percent of the movie was shot in the studio, on specially constructed sets with some scenes enhanced with CGI (especially Hessian's sequences).
br /
br /Horror, humor and romance go hand in hand throughout the movie. As always, Johnny Depp impeccably plays constable Ichabod Crane, a man of deep contradiction: Being whimsical all the time, sometimes he is adamant stalwart when needs to be, sometimes uneasy wimpy when things go awry. He fearlessly cuts up corpses with Cronenberg-like medical gadgets, but he is afraid of spiders and bugs!.
br /
br /The only downside of the movie is that romance between Ichabod and Katrina is plastic and half-baked. There's no chemistry evident between them, so it is impossible to accept either tenderness or passion in their affinity. Evidently, their romance is the spice added to the spooky mood of the story.

br /Last word: absolutely fantastic and entertaining film on every aspect - one of my all-time favourites...
Funny and entertaining gothic horror January 29, 2008 T. R. Alexander (East Anglia, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I am a big fan of Tim Burton's films and I would say that Sleepy Hollow has to be my favourite. The film is loosely based on the short story `The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' by Washington Irvine and follows New York police constable Ichabod Crane who is sent to the small village of Sleepy Hollow to prove his scientific detection methods by finding who killed a number of the villages residence. During his investigations he discovers a world of magic and the undead while coming to terms with his own past.

br /This film contains all the elements of a good Tim Burton film including gothic horror, a brilliantly funny script, beautiful visuals and Johnny Depp. The all-star cast all give near perfect performances especially Depp himself. Some of the special effects were somewhat suspect but the headless horseman itself and the overall mood of the film don't suffer and remain brilliantly dark. Sleepy Hollow is a beautifully made film that should be loved by any fan of Burton's films.
Great classic brought to life on the screen: creepy ghost story, but also an oldschool crime-solving story - top notch January 4, 2007 Klaus van Amelrode 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
What an excellent film this is!!!
br /
br /The setting is superb, scenery and environment are absolutely beautiful, the camerawork is amazing.

br /Johnny Depp is playing a cowardly detective set to solve some brutal murders in the village of Sleepy Hollow. It turns out to be a really creepy ghost story, but also an oldschool crime-solving story. He portraits his characters with his very own sloppiness, fun and superb acting skills. Miranda Richardson in a pivotal role was equally superb.

A cracking horror/ old-style crime story. Greatly entertaining stuff! December 19, 2007 J. Smith (Derbyshire, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I watched this film one Monday night on 'Film4' when I was bored. I thought I
br /was in for another ordinary school night in. This film soon brightened things up, however, I was drawn in from the first few minutes. This is a very good interpretation of the legend of 'Sleepy Hollow'. It's packed with excellent actors: Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, From Hell) he carries the film superbly, Michael Gambon (Open Range, Layer Cake, Gosford Park), Richard Griffiths (History Boys, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Miranda Richardson (Blackadder, Harry Potter 4) and Christopher Walken (Click, A View to a Kill), who makes a great addition as the Headless Horseman. A very good film that is enjoyable as an action, a horror, or simply an old-school crime solving thriller. Buy it and enjoy it!
A head of the game... October 30, 2008 Wowbagger the Infinite (Somerset, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
One thing you are certain of with a Tim Burton film, is that it will be a visual feast, and Sleepy Hollow is no exception. You have to keep reminding yourself that it is a colour film, as Burton makes the whole thing look so washed out and, to a point, sepia. You will realise just how washed out the movie looks when after viewing it, take a look at the original cinema trailer (an extra on this DVD) - it almost leaps off the screen with bright colours. But the washed out misty look is best for this film and just adds to the sense of unease and forboding.
br /Johnny Depp does indeed "camp it up a storm" as Constable Ichabod Crane, one of the NYPD's earliest stars it seems. His investigation into the Headless Horseman killings in upstate New York lead him into many sinister and ghoulish predicaments. Depp is as watchable as ever, commanding the screen whenever he is on. I am a big fan of Christina Ricci, but this is not one of her best outings as she comes across a little too woodenly as Katrina van Tassel, and blonde really does not suit her! There is marvellous support, with only a whiff of hamming it up from stars such as Michael Gambon, Richard Griffiths, Michael Gough, Ian McDiarmid, Miranda Richardson, Alan Armstrong and even Christopher Lee at the beginning. Blink and you will miss Martin Landau at the start. Christopher Walken must have taken ages to learn his lines as all he says is "YAAAH!" a lot, but he does it jolly well all the same.
br /This film is creepy, atmospheric in the extreme, beautifully shot, on the whole well acted and will give you a fright or two. Marvellous stuff.
