5 out of 5 stars A sensitiver portrayal of a serious disorder.   May 8, 2009

Michael Sheen is simply superb in this ITV drama. It is a look into the life of an extreme case of OCD which progresses into Tourettes-like all disorders it manifests itself in different ways for every sufferer. The sympathy that you feel for his character Mark is at times, overwhelming. He realises that he is on a slippery slope and we watch him desperately try to put his life back together.A good portrayal which shows us this terrible disease for what it is-a condition that someone can't help. br /A very moving and revealing drama,a harrowing portrait of a man who badly needs help and needs it immediately but doesn't have the first idea of how to start,he tries to control it himself and ends up becoming a threat to himself and those around him. br /English hard of hearing subtitles.

4 out of 5 stars Involving insight into Obsessive Compulsive Disorder   June 21, 2007

The title "Dirty Filthy Love " sends all the wrong signals, this is a very serious film about obsessive compulsive disorder and Tourettes disease. br / br /Mark Furness (Michael Sheen, remember him as Tony Blair in "The Deal") is an architect trapped with nightmare obsessions about cleanliness and irrational urges to scream out obscenities. br / br /But before you press the stop button pause and consider, people with OCD are only unfortunate in experiencing extreme symptoms of mildly obsessive behaviour that occurs for many people. OCD is only normal extreme cleanliness, tidiness etc written large, many of us are irritated by pictures that are not level, ornaments not neatly lined up. br / br /Mark destroys his marriage, looses his job and finds help in a support group run by fellow sufferer Charlotte (Shirley Henderson) a feisty little woman with a garish dress sense, but very well acted as a supportive relationship without any overt romantic element. br / br /The film is understanding and sympathetic but there is also a lot of humour. The symptoms of the characters are probably unrealistically severe and do not represent the experience of most sufferers, but this is important in drawing us into the condition and providing an involving drama. br / br /Directed with a light hand it is highly recommended if disabilities and neurological conditions interest you. br /

2 out of 5 stars No, this is not an insight into OCD   July 15, 2007

I have OCD and I watched this film hoping that, for the first time, I would see a television drama that was an honest portrayal of how people with OCD live their life; I was particularly buoyed by the knowledge that the writer himself had OCD. What a disappointment. This drama is just one long freak show from first to last. It's not enough to give the character OCD, but the makers also give him tourettes! No explanation, and I'm sure legions of viewers were left thinking OCD and Tourettes were one and the same thing. And of course he had every manifestation of OCD (contamination, hoarding, symmetry, superstition) he possibly could, for maximum dramatic effect. And the scenes involving the OCD support group were just ridiculous. I can assure you that support groups are nothing like they were portrayed but sadly I wouldn't be surprised if this drama put a few people off going to one! This drama was directed with a very heavy, over-the-top hand. I was hoping it would get the message across to the general public that people with OCD weren't house-bound, selfish nutters with long beards, tics, and a house full of old newspapers. For me this programme did the opposite and I was so angry watching it, but more than anything hugely disappointed. It wouldn't surprise me if the writer was pressurised by the TV company to sensationalise the script for 'the sake of drama'. Whata shame, as a sensitive portrayal within an effective characterisation would have been such better drama than melodrama.
