5 out of 5 stars I'm a little bias as I love the actor Jamie Draven, but harmless chick flic nonetheless   April 20, 2007

Rom-com, typically girly movie that is lighthearted and entertaining. Shown on ITV approx 2003, so a treat to be released on DVD. br /Enjoyable film about the trouble and joys of love and lust and the complications that a child can bring for a young woman who has a 'sporadic relationship with the truth'. A heartwarming tale. br /My personal favourite actor Jamie Draven features as lovable and caring character, James. It's well worth a watch with family and/or friends.

5 out of 5 stars Great story and Jamie Draven is in it to...bonus!!   March 18, 2008

i thought Watermelon is a great heartwarming story about a young irish girl trying to find her way and feet in life and all the hassle of love and romance that comes with it ...its funny without being cheesy, light hearted and it still gets to the point. it shows how things are for all the charecters and you get to know and understand how they are all feeling, and connect with the charecters. br /Jamie Draven looks very hot in this romantic comedy and as usaul he gives an 100% to this role and give a class A performance! Anna friel gives an excerlent performace too and her accent dosent slip once from start to finish. Brilliant film!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth watching, especially if you're having a girly night in or want a quick `pick me up'/ feel good film.   July 13, 2009

I purchased this film for a number of different reasons, the main ones being that I have always wanted to see how good an actress Anna Friel is and also because I enjoy films made in the UK which don't have big Hollywood names in them (the fact that the rather nice Jamie Draven is in it doesn't go amiss either!). br / br / Having not yet read the book which inspired the film I can't comment on how good an adaptation it is unlike other reviews I have read. What I can comment on however is how good it is and how well it stands on its own as a film. br / br / I must admit that I was a little shocked when I first saw how long it is on for (the run time for it is just under one and a quarter hours) but, you have to remember that it was originally made to be shown on ITV and so wasn't going to be as long as films made for the cinema. The short amount of time does mean that, in some parts, the storyline seems a little rushed but, having said this, it does give you all the information you need as a viewer and keeps you gripped all the way through with its mix of drama and humour. br / br / The actors are all fantastic and manage to evoke a number of different emotions from the viewer (I found myself yelling at the TV on more than one occasion for example!). The main character Claire (played by Freil) comes across as a well rounded person and, although her one-to-ones with the camera are a little annoying at first, you really get to know her better and understand what she's thinking as the film progresses. br / br / Overall I think the film is worth watching, especially if you're having a girly night in or want a quick `pick me up'/ feel good film and I give it 5/5. (I'd happily give it a 10/5 however just for the scene in which Draven gets into the bath tub with his jeans still on!). br /

5 out of 5 stars Cute, quirky, adorable romance!!!   June 25, 2009

Every now and then some movie comes along that you don't expect to be good but then it suddenly surprises you. That was my experience last night with Watermelon; the film adaptation of Marian Keyes best-selling novel. br / br /What is so beautiful about this story is it's simplicity. Who would have thought that such a simple, straight-forward almost every day story could be so compelling? In short, funloving Claire Ryan (Anna Friel) has the world at her feet, she has just graduated from university and is now off to London to start a new life with her boyfriend. Everything seems perfect until her boyfriend leaves her and then she discovers she is pregnant. But where does her new beau fit into all of this? Some tough decisions are called for but procrastination is the root of all evil. br / br /Granted the story does not seem the most original but what makes this film truly memorable is its unique and very charming script full of just the right combination of humour and sentiment, that will have you laughing one minute and in tears the next. Perhaps the ending was a bit sudden (the film is not even an hour and a half so it could have allowed a bit more time at the end) but I wouldn't mark the film down because of that. br / br /Add to this a strong set of actors in the form of the lively Friel, the caring Fricker and of course the gorgeous James Draven and viewers are certainly in for a treat. br / br /To conclude Watermelon is not a movie that is going to change your life, it is not a movie worthy of an Oscar but does any of that matter? Not a bit! It is perfect for a girly-night in, a mother-daughter catch-up or even a date-movie. Highly recommended. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Yet Another Bad "Title"   September 28, 2007

If Anna Friel wants to be a successful film star she needs to get into movies with decent titles. Look at the string of bad ones. The Tribe, Me Without You, The Land Girls and now Watermelon. They do not inspire you to watch. br / br /Yet another film. Yet anotehr nude scene for Anna Friel. This time topless in a bath. Bubble bath usually implies we won't see anything but the director nicley has Anna float her breasts on top of the water. How emabarrassing. At least, I know I would be embarrassed if it were me to have to do that. The directors are using her and she lets them. Nudity will never make you a big star. You need story. br / br /So onto story - is it good - well surprisingly it probably is the best she has done since leaving Brookside. I enjoyed it. It is funny and whitty at times. But only 3 stars because I believe she can do better - if she chooses better scripts. She needs to wait rather than rush to make as many movies as possible hoping one will send her to America stardum - whcih we can tell she so wants. But right now - will never get.
