Amazon.co.uk Reviews iThe Guardian/i offers satisfying entertainment with a no-nonsense combination of Hollywood formula and good old-fashioned star power. While honoring the men and women who serve as rescue swimmers for the U.S. Coast Guard, this predictable yet appealing drama is a well-crafted showcase for Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher, who bring welcome depth and dimension to their formulaic roles. It's basically iTop Gun/i for the Coast Guard, with Costner playing a legendary rescuer haunted by recent tragedy and the impending break-up of his marriage, and Kutcher as the hot-shot recruit whose bravado is tested when Costner takes over a grueling 18-week basic training course, where a 50% attrition rate ensures that only the best will make the grade. There's nothing particularly inventive about Ron L. Brinkerhoff's screenplay, but it's intelligently written and well-directed (by iThe Fugitive/i helmer Andrew Davis) as it shows how seasoned veteran and troubled but talented trainee build mutual respect while sorting through the trauma of accidents that left each of them as sole survivors, tormented by self-doubt and guilt.p Bolstered by a strong supporting cast including Neal McDonough, John Heard, Sela Ward and Clancy Brown, iThe Guardian/i is a bit on the long side (137 minutes), but it never feels slow, and a romantic subplot (with Kutcher wooing a schoolteacher played by Melissa Sagemiller) blends nicely with thrilling ocean-rescue sequences incorporating a seamless blend of CGI and footage shot in a 750,000-gallon water tank. Music fans will welcome the scene-stealing appearance of veteran singer Bonnie Bramlett as the owner of a jazz/blues club near the training base, where iThe Guardian/i serves up yet another staple of its genre: the barroom brawl. Although Hurricane Katrina prevented iThe Guardian/i from being filmed in New Orleans in 2005, real-life footage during the closing credits makes it clear that the Coast Guard was essential in Katrina's aftermath, and this rousing drama pays overdue tribute to those who risk there lives (to quote the Coast Guard's motto) "so that others may live." i--Jeff Shannon/i

Amazing February 7, 2007 Rocko (Chichester, UK) 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
I went to the cinema not having high expectations of this film but boy was I wrong. Ashton Kutcher's dramatic performance is incredible. He has come a long way since Cheaper By The Dozen. The chemistry between Kuther and Kostner is great as well especially when Kostner is giving Kutcher a talking to about his personal file. I would recommend anyone to buy this film as it will pleasently surprise you.
This will keep you both happy.... July 2, 2007 Casper (Sussex, UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I agree with a previous reviewer, there is a little of An Officer And A Gentleman about this movie. However, in my opinion it knocks the socks off it. The action scenes are brilliantly shot and totally convincing. One of the few movies that kept my husband in the room and watching for the entire duration. It was excellent to see The Coastguard highlighted like this as they are definately the forgotton service. One up for "The Puddle Jumpers". It is a moving story and I cried and cried at the end, but I think after you watch the alternative endings section in the supplementary material, you'll agree it was the right one and the only possible ending. It's such a good film I can't understand why more wasn't made of it when it was on the big screen? Watch it, you won't regret it.
Excellent March 18, 2007 O. Doyle (Ireland) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Movies involving Kevin Costner and water don't usually get good reviews but The Guardian might just have changed that. The story follows the lives of the US Coast Guard rescue swimmers and in particular Ben Randall, super-league rescue swimmer for the Coast Guard in Kodiak, Alaska. Racked with guilt after the death of his team Randall agrees to teach. There he finds himself squared up against Jake Fisher (Ashton Kutcher), a high-school swimming star that might just become one of the best rescue swimmers around.

br /There are some fantastic action sequences in this movie and I didn't realize it was so long as I was engrossed from the get-go. I was really impressed with the performance of Ashton Kutcher who I've never seen doing anything even remotely serious before. That boy sure can act. Kevin Costner does a great job of playing Ben Randall and all in all I think this movie has it all....excitement, amusement and a love story thrown into the mix too. Excellent movie and highly recommended.

An emotionally touching and moving movie March 17, 2007 P. DATTA (Stockton on Tees, Teesside) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Guardian is an emotionally touching and moving movie about what reality is really like for US coastguard swimmers. What you learn to appreciate is coastguards risk and even sacrifices their life to save individuals. Coastguards righteously deserve their status as heroes for what they courageously set out to do.

br /The movie is a story about a dedicated coastguard Ben Randall who is a legend, due to his heroics effort of saving lives, but unfortunately cannot prevent his colleagues from perishing in a tragic accident. He later join a course as an instructor to rebuilds his confidence and to recruit an elite team of coastguards swimmers who undergo a rigorous training programme. He develops a close bonding with a high school champion's swimmer Jake. The relationship between the two is the pivotal point of the movie.

br /The movie as I have already stated is emotionally touching, as story is filled with tragic moments that touches your heart. The movie is brilliantly directed, storyline is superb and characterisation is very strong. Both Costner and Kutcher offer top notch performances as US coastguard's swimmers and provide an accurate portrayal of the harsh realities experienced by coastguards. This movie is closely reminiscent to the hit 80's movie Top Gun, where you have heroes who do something that makes everyone proud of them, but does it end in a high note? I recommend that you watch this movie and see for yourself whether you share the same judgements as me.
