Amazon.co.uk Review Light years before political correctness--1983 to be exact--or his comeback in tame Disney comedies, Eddie Murphy was a charismatic, wonderfully offensive, egocentric 22-year-old black comedian known for crude celebrity impersonations and often shockingly frank diatribes on racial and sexual politics. Dressed in a skin-tight red leather suit and delivering endless streams of obscenities faster than Richard Pryor ever did, Murphy is captured in this raunchy HBO special (a filmed document of his Grammy-winning album, iEddie Murphy, Comedian/i) at his confident, swaggering, comedic peak--a posture that soon disappeared after a string of bland Hollywood comedies. Here, however, his energy and sheer virtuosity command complete control over the audience for 107 minutes, whether he's mocking personalities like Elvis, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder, or spinning long, gag-filled personal anecdotes about the ice-cream man or dysfunctional family barbecues. There's no apologizing for the immature stereotyping, blatant homophobia, and sexism (though Murphy did so several years later) that surface during the routine. But, then again, unlike his much nastier, one-sided concert film, iRaw/i, no topic here is safe from Murphy's uproarious tongue-lashings--including the comedian himself. i--Dave McCoy/i

You Look Mighty Cute In Them Jeans...... February 6, 2007 Mr. R. J. Diamond 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
Forget RAW, this is the definitive Murphy performance. I found RAW to be a, still funny but poorly recycled Delirious. I must have seen this 20 odd times and i still laugh all the way through. I have searched for this on DVD for years and finally here it comes. I have a very worn VHS version so am chomping at the bit to finally get this. His interpretations of Elvis, James Brown and Wacko himself are sublime. The Ice Cream gag is worth the entry alone. Very Richard Pryor but very, very funny. Don't hesitate, if you thought RAW was funny, buy this now and I promise you, you won't be disappointed.
Greatest Stand Up Show Ever March 6, 2007 Mr. Ross A. Mowat (Scotland) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
About time! I have been waiting for this to be released on DVD for years. I only have a really bad US VHS, well worn as well. Buy this immediatley. The greatest stand up show of all time. Beleive me Eddie Murphy was not always just a guy who stars in stupid films, he used to be a genius. RAW is good, this is ten times as funny.

I can't believe this has taken so long to become available. I know Eddie Murphy was reluctant to back a release because of the somewhat politically incorrect content. (Please view it with this in mind). I'm glad he's relented. It is simply a classic.

br /I have lost count of how many times I watched this on VHS with friends in my late teens/early twenties (late 80's/early 90's). It is simply gut-bustingly hilarious and will have you crying with laughter. Most people around my age can quote huge chunks of it.
br /The ice cream man, the shoe throwing....
br /Most of us have also spent many years trying to track it down on any format, at almost any price. It still rates as one of the funniest stand-up routines I have ever seen.

br /I almost jumped out of my chair when I read it was being released at last.

Hey Gus? Why has a dvd release taken this long? Goonie Goo Goo!! March 8, 2007 Mr. Alex Stassi (UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have an original copy of this on VHS, but I know when this gets released i'm inviting everyone over to watch this CLASSIC on DVD!!! Raw is good, but it just doesn't come close to this!!
Greatest Stand Up Performance Of All Time!! Easily March 7, 2007 HEWI (Newcastle, England) 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
The one thing in common with your Billy Connelly's, Peter Kay's, Richard Pryor's, Ricky Gervais's, Chris Rock's, Dave Chappelle's, Chubby Brown's, Steve Martin's, Cedric the Entertainer's is that although all these guys are comic genius's - they have all NEVER ever been this good on stage! THIS IS BY FAR THE GREATEST STAND UP PERFORMANCE EVER!
br /Filmed in Washington DC in 1983, Long before Eddie was a household name Hollywood star he was without doubt the funniest guy on the planet! YOU MUST OWN THIS - EVERYBODY ATLEAST ONCE IN THEIR LIFE MUST SEE THIS!! No Matter the price, it will be worth it - only problem is that it is very dated as alot's changed since 83' - so unless you were born in the 90's - Buy it!!
