5 out of 5 stars A gem of black humour   March 26, 2007

I don't know why this gem didn't get more press. A cult classic in the making. Pegg is excellent and, more unexpectedly, so is Schwimmer! A classic plot but a crazy ride, with a freedom of tone more commonly found in Asian cinema (a mix of splastick and really dark stuff, I won't say more). Indispensable!

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good   April 18, 2007

I agree with the other reviews so far - this film disappeared from the cinemas so fast I assumed it was rubbish. br / br /It's actually a very funny, chaotic comedy/thriller with an oddly dark tone - as likeable as the characters are, their actions are pretty questionable... It sort of reminded me of a light hearted equivalent to Way of the Gun. br / br /Simon Pegg's American accent is dodgy at best, but he's still very entertaining - it's jarring to hear him at first, but once I got settled with the idea, he seemed a lot more like his usual self, his facial expressions especially. David Schwimmer is likeable (I hated him as Ross...) and kind of the straight man to Simon Pegg's loon. Alice Eve does a much more convincing accent, and holds her own well against two fairly big name comedy actors... br / br /The extras on the DVD are very good - they're short, but mostly filmed on camcorders by the director and three main cast members so they seem quite personal... Pegg's contributions are the best - berating a seagull, cheating on ps2 games and calling Schwimmer "Dr. Schwimmington". br / br /Definitely worth renting if you're not sure - I'm sure theres a lot of people who'd be put off by the dark humour, but it certainly deserves more of an audience than it apparently had at the cinema...

5 out of 5 stars A Dark Shallow Grave (Only Darker)   September 8, 2008

This is a really good film. It is a silly dark comedy. Its like a darker but also sillier version of Shallow Grave. If you like your comedy black this is for you. Its not friends or Run Fat Boy Run which would explain all the one and two star reviews. Not Peg or Schwimmer,s usual stuff. This has a much darker tone than Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuss. Although that stuff is violent it has a positive out look on friendship and is also fun. This has very little laugh out load stuff, and is more like grim ironic chortling stuff. Very good but only watch if you like this sort of thing. br / br /My wife hated it.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY...   April 13, 2007

...my friends can see this movie, and I can stop raving about it! I was lucky enough to catch this one while it was still in the cinema, and I and the rest of the audience had a blast. Razor-sharp humor, genuine edge-of-your-seat tension, a boffo soundtrack and the always spot-on Simon Pegg. It also features a couple of the more unusual movie-deaths you'll ever encounter (sorry, no spoilers here!). Definitely a cult film in the making. LOVE IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars A must-see if you like your movies weird and inventive!   April 16, 2007

I don't know how this film went under everyone's radar. I just got it and watched it with a couple of mates, and it ROCKS! It's quite a departure from what Pegg usually does (and Schwimmer for that matter): it's surprisingly dark, sometimes even creepy, and at the same time will make laugh your head off when you expect it the least. If I had any criticism, it is a little bit slow to get started, but once it has, man what a sick and outrageous ride it becomes! The tone is very unusual, and in that respect might not be everybody's cup of tea. I now understand why I read both rave and average reviews about it (some said it was the comedy of the year, others seemed to hate it). If you like your movies full of surprises, provocative and inventive, this one's for you! As mentionned below, it is probably going to become a cult hit very soon. Great soundtrack too. The extras are ok: making-of is quite traditional but the Pegg-Cam Diary more than makes up for that. It's just too short!
