Amazon.co.uk Review
Predator wreaked havoc in the jungle and struck box-office gold, so Hollywood logic dictated that iPredator 2/i should raise hell in the big, bad city. Los Angeles, to be specific, and this near-future L.A. (circa 1997) is an ultra-violent playground for the invisibility-cloaked alien that hunted Arnold Schwarzenegger in the previous film. Scant explanation is given for the creature's return, and because Ah-nuld was busy making Total Recall, Danny Glover was awkwardly installed as the maverick cop (is there any other kind?) who defies a government goon (Gary Busey) to curtail the alien's inner-city killing spree. But why bother, when the victims are scummy Colombian drug lords? Don't look for intelligent answers; director Stephen Hopkins favors wall-to-wall action over sensible plotting, allowing Stan Winston's more prominently featured Predator to join the ranks of iconic movie monsters. And anticipating Alien vs. Predator, there's a familiar-looking skull in the Predator's trophy case! i--Jeff Shannon/i

5 out of 5 stars He's in town, with a few days to kill...   July 29, 2006

The two Predator movies are my all time favourite films. They just work beautifully together, both films have the same feel to them, the same style. I really enjoy watching them and Predator 2 would have to be my favourite. br / br /Predator 2, while not having the same sense of fun as the original, has a much more interesting plot than the first film and reveals more about the Predator himself. It's more of a mystery story than a full blown action movie. The suspense is really well done, Predator 2 having beautiful cinematography combined with impressive visual effects and Alan Silvestri's wonderful musical score. It's a good film and has been really under-rated. I had always wanted to buy this on DVD but it really never had a good release up until now. br / br /This "Special Edition" is a really well designed set, with nice cover and disc art and cool interactive menus. There's two audio commentaries for the film, one by the writers and another by the director, that go into some depth about the making of the movie. Quite entertaining stuff. On the second disc there is a featurette about how the movie was made, detailing aspects such as why they decided to set it in the city and how difficult it was to get the film finished because of all the optical effects. The featurette has interviews from people such as Gary Busey and the Predator himself, Kevin Peter Hall. Also thrown in are some segments about the Pred's weapons and how the camouflage effects were achieved alongside some old previews for the movie and a large photo archive. br / br /All in all, a great DVD for an excellent film.

5 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANT FILM IF YOU DON'T COMPARE IT TO THE FIRST FILM   August 30, 2007

Series Note: Although this is a sequel, it's not strictly necessary to watch this film after the first. I almost always to prefer to watch film series in order, but as the Predator films are not constructed as chapters in a novel, there may be some advantage to watching Predator 2 first--namely that the Predator itself is explained much better in this film, so it might help viewers fill out unstated backstory for the first film. br / br /Set in a "future" 1997 (the film was released in 1990), we're shown a Los Angeles suffering from both a mounting heat wave and mounting anarchy. Lieutenant Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) is a rule-breaking, short-tempered downtown cop. He works closely with Danny Archuleta (Ruben Blades), Leona (Maria Conchita Alonso) and recent transfer Jerry Lambert (Bill Paxton), all eccentrics in their own way, and all but Danny equally rule-breaking. The film begins with a Colombian drug gang engaging in a shoot-out with the cops. The police finally manage to defensively drive them into a building, but when they at last converge on the gang, it seems that somebody, or something, else has finished the job for the police. More drug gangs are attacked, and it seems as if there may be some kind of vigilante on the loose. But when a secretive government task squad, headed by Peter Keyes (Gary Busey), enters the picture and takes increasingly odd actions, it seems that something even more bizarre may be responsible (a fact also given away by the film's title, it's relationship to the Predator series, and obvious shots involving the titular character early in the film). br / br /For my tastes, Predator 2 is an example that breaks the supposed trend that "sequels are never as good as their predecessors". I think Predator 2 is a brilliant film, better than the first film by two points. This one is a 10 out of 10 for me. br / br /Let's get the more obvious comments out of the way first. As a horror and sci-fi leaning crime actioner, director Stephen Hopkins and writers Jim and John Thomas have created a fast-paced, exciting, visceral film. This is a story set against burgeoning anarchy and chaos is a gang-filled urban environment, and Hopkins appropriately never decreases the intensity of the film--we barely pause to take a breath. While that may be exhausting to some viewers, and the rapid pacing might lead some to confusion, anyone with a taste for action films should love it, plus the genre-melding is accomplished without a hitch. br / br /The cast is quirky and excellent. Keep in mind that I have a taste for surrealism, camp, absurdism, and so on, so that makes me appreciate the acting in the film even more. I'm a big Bill Paxton fan. His performance in Predator 2 is a good example why. I also like Danny Glover a lot, and he turns in a great performance. Additionally, we have Gary Busey, one of the odder actors in Hollywood (just watch his comments on the DVD extras)--a fact that to me always pleasantly comes through in his characters, and the incomparable Morton Downey, Jr., basically playing his "real life" television talk show personality, is even present as a "guerilla" journalist. br / br /The music, special effects and every other technical aspect are also excellent. br / br /But what makes this film even better is the brilliance beneath the obvious aspects. The Predator, because of his goals, is usually unseen, hidden or camouflaged in his unique way, and most of the time he's watching others. Thus, Hopkins permeates the film with images of voyeurism, hidden views, reflections, veiled appearances, and so on. There are tens of brilliant shots through windows and/or showing our primary visuals through reflections. The heat, which not only amps up the chaotic atmosphere of the film, also enables Hopkins to make everyone sweaty throughout most of the film. The sweat creates reflections. There is the regular presence of the media covering the story, being voyeurs on the film's action. Sometimes we see things through their cameras. There are a lot of televisions and computer screens throughout the film. There is a subtle theme of voyeurism via public display of personal snapshots. We become literal voyeurs, in the sexual sense, by watching the film for one brief scene. The L.A. police become voyeurs of the task force's actions. During the subway scene, much of the action becomes hidden because of a marvelous strobe light effect. I wouldn't doubt that if we watched the film with only this aspect in mind, we would probably find it present in some way in every scene, in nearly every shot. br / br /I know this film is sometimes panned, but it would be undeserved. It may be a case of the film being too hip for the room. In any event, you shouldn't miss Predator 2.

5 out of 5 stars Predator 2 ,EXCELLENT UNDERRATED sequel   February 25, 2009
ALEX
One of the best sequels ever made ,especially when you consider the act it had to follow br / br /It's action packed from start to finish ,and they really expanded on the Predators devastating arsenal ,with added weapons like the telescopic spear ,razor discus/frizbee and capture nets, the predators themselves look really awesome. They also have created some terrific looking sets, the iside of the spacecraft set in particular,it looks amazing, br / br /The acting's not bad either,Danny Glover is great and Bill Paxton creates a very likeable character ,and Gary Busey as usual makes a great bad guy. br / br /I watched this movie very recently and it's aged very well, it still looks fresh. The special features on this 2 disc edition are great ,and they show it was much harder to make a movie like this back in the day ,when there wasn't the luxury of modern day CGI ,especially when it came to creating the Predators moving action sequences, they had to work alot harder in those day's to create the desired effect br / br /Awesome special edition dvd .....a must have for all fans of Predator and quality sci-fi movies

5 out of 5 stars An excellent thriller   January 5, 2010
Mr. Suchet Budon
The movie has an engaging and likeable lead performance from Danny Glover who proves an unlikely but great adversary to the young Predator - The movie is a bit more comic and has more adult moments in it compared to the previous Predator movie which was a classic hunt thriller in the vein of Jaws and Alien - This one builds on that and has futuristic elements of movies such as Soilent Green and Robocop thrown in for good measure. br / br /The supporting cast are even better than the supporting cast in the previous movie - in this movie there are stars such as Bill Paxton and Gary Busy providing some great moments - The excellent director 'Steven Hopkins' captures the imagination well with great drama and action (He eventually went on to direct the brilliant '24' series.). br / br /The Predator in this movie enters a futuristic LA (A contrast to the 1980s jungles of South America seen in the first movie) - the Predator has new weapons and is a lot more younger than the one seen in the previous movie. There are some excellent moments where the movie reflects on the way police and society handle crime in the future and now to some extent (Funny moment on the train where a potential moment brings out a potential mass vigilante moment only to be interrupted by the.... Ok I wont spoil the scene.) br / br /This is one of the better sci-fi sequels out there - it doesn't disappoint and will have you hooked from the bloody start. The brilliant ending kind of connects it with the brilliant Dark Horse 'Aliens Versus Predator' comic book series (do not confuse the coment with the ridiculous Alien Versus Predator movie by Paul W.S. Anderson - The comic books and the movie Predator 2 was released well over a decade before that degradation and are far more potent.). br / br /Its a shame Stephen Hopkins had not been involved in the recent Alien Versus Predator movies. br / br /Now that Robert Rodriguez and Nomrod Antal are bringing a 3rd Predator movie to the screens in 2010 (Which is anticipated to be as sharp as the previous Predator movies), Predator 2 is well well worth checking out. br / br /At the price here this is a must buy for all sci-fi fans.
