Amazon.co.uk Review
Compared to James McAvoy's previous picture, iThe Last King of Scotland/i, this comedy may seem trivial, but trivia has its pleasures. Produced by Tom Hanks and adapted by David Nicholls from his 2003 novel, iStarter for Ten/i doesn't tackle major historical events, but it also takes place in the past. After a prologue establishing his childhood in provincial Essex, Brian (McAvoy) takes off for Bristol University in 1985 and immediately sets his sights on the campus quiz team. If he makes the cut, he'll get to compete on iUniversity Challenge/i, a show he used to watch the show with his late father, who encouraged his son's quest for knowledge. For all his book smarts, though, Brian is rather naïve about the ways of the world, unlike his friend Spencer (Dominic Cooper, iThe History Boys/i), who remains in town. As Brian and his teammates prepare for the competition, he falls for co-eds Alice (Alice Eve) and Rebecca (Rebecca Hall, iThe Prestige/i), struggles to repair his fraying friendship with Spencer, and confronts feelings of betrayal over his mother's new boyfriend. For the most part, iStarter for Ten/i explores standard-issue college concerns, but with abundant wit, whimsy, and a soundtrack stuffed with Thatcher-era favorites, like the Smiths and New Order. While the resolution to Brian's romantic dilemma hardly comes as a surprise, the climactic quiz show is a nail-biter. Mostly, the film is a fine showcase for the multi-talented McAvoy, who confirms that he can handle light comedy as gracefully as dark drama. i--Kathleen C. Fennessy/i END

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie!   September 2, 2007

I just rented it for the second time in two weeks. Now it's on my "to buy" list. Funny, quirky, witty, sexy are only a few adjectives that describe this movie. The performances are so refreshing! Maybe I've been watching too much Hollywood pap (save the wonderful British-made period films that I watch over and over) but this film knocked me off my heels! br / br /I only discovered this movie after digging into the filmography of James McAvoy. Having recently fallen in love with his performance in Becoming Jane, I then rented The Last King of Scotland and now Starter for 10. James is the most exciting actor to come to light in a VERY long time. Most actors are one-trick ponies - posers. They are the same in every performance. James boldly breaks that formula and creates characters that I cannot take my eyes off of. I'm anxiously awaiting his next starring role in Atonement with Keira Knightly. br / br /I highly recommend Starter for 10. If you're looking for a fun, funny, brilliant little film, then this is the one!

5 out of 5 stars 80's nostalgia   April 28, 2007

Starter for 10 journeys backs to nostalgia years of the 1980's. The main focus of the story is about University's life viewed from a student's perspective (Brian), who is raised in a working class background. That is the general gist of the story br / br / The 80's atmosphere recreated in the movie is really amazing and well distinctive with the typical fashions, banners and pop scene that you associate closely with the decade. On that front, the movie must score highly. It sure relights fond memories of what life was really like living within the decade. In terms of storyline, it is well written and delivered. Without giving too many spoilers, the story is about the common activities student are involved in such as studying, drinking, partying and even going to University Challenge. br / br /Starter for 10 is real treat to watch and have a laugh at. You can say to yourself in a typical Warburton advert style that I remember those cool hairstyles, funky fashion and those old banners. Have a laugh at how outdated and pants technology was when compared in the digital age of today. I can on about it endlessy, but I will not as my sole purpose to convince you about what is so appealing about the product I am viewing, rather than write an essay about the 80's decade. br / br /Straight to the point, if you want to watch a movie that is really entertaining and with humour in, Starter for 10 should be your no 1 choice within that film genre. Great movie watch on the weekend after a long working week to relax and relieve 80's nostalgia.

Another one of those 'How did this get on my rental list' movies, and yet another gem. A very different romantic comedy. br /The story of a young man's journey from dreaming about university, to getting there, to taking part in university challenge. br /Along the way he learns life's lessons on friendship, romance and love, with many hilarious moments along the way. br /James McAvoy is wonderful in the lead. br /If you're in the market for something a bit different, this comes very highly recommended. br /On a by note - I don't know why this is rated 15. I don't think it merited anything more than a 12 rating.

5 out of 5 stars Captures being an 80's student so well   September 7, 2007

This is a great film. As someone who was at university at the same time, it captured the essence of what it was like so well: the music, the digs, the political environment; everything really. The only problem my wife and I had was that it took us 30 minutes to get 10/10 on the 80's quiz.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic in every way   April 27, 2007

This film is a must see for anyone who actually appreciates fantastic acting and a really good story- especially if you have fond memories of the 1980's!!!!!!!! br /It is heartwarming and witty, and avoids the sloppiness of many romantic comedies. Just watch it. Now.
