Waiting for a Region 1 version December 14, 2007 T. Shaffner (USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Despite the trend towards negativity in the other reviews this movie has received here, this film was in fact an excellent movie. No it was not a Lock Stock or Snatch type of movie, no it did not follow the mold of some of these movies Guy Ritchie has done in the past few years, but it was still an excellent work.

br /The acting is trashed because the characters being portrayed are not your usual characters, and so what is actually an extremely difficult role very well done is seen as poor acting. The film is confusing because it is meant to have depth, to make you think, and unlike Lock Stock and Snatch it has a theme. This movie has a MESSAGE. It is not a clear message because it is not an easy one to understand, and I'm not even sure if the makers of the movie meant it to come out this way, but there is a definite message in this movie that is clearer and more effectively communicated than about any other movie I've seen which touches similar topics.

br /In this movie you still get the gangster/mobster type professional killer characters, you still get the feel and plot type of a Snatch or Lock Stock movie, and the plot is as good or better than those movies, but in addition you have a depth and richness of meaning that was not present in those earlier works. While unconventional, and not easily understood to those looking for mindless action and excitement, this is a truly great movie and stands apart as one of a kind for all it attempts and, more importantly, PULLS OFF in a manner that, if you're open to it, will truly stun you. I won't even attempt to discuss the meaning of this movie in a mere review, I'll just say there is meaning in a way I wish more movies had the guts to attempt. See the movie, watch it multiple times, and I hope you will understand the message there. It is well worth the time.
A movie that will change your life July 11, 2009 A. Shah 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
You have to watch this movie twice. The first time you watch it, you will be puzzled and uncomfortable. You grasp the depth of this film the first time around. The second time you watch it you will start to peel the layers and understand the true message of this movie. Give it time to sink in. On the second watch pause, rewind and pay close attention.

br /Don't expect this movie to be a gangster style, run-n-gun, Snatch style action flick.
Brilliant August 27, 2009 P. D. Cornish (England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film is brilliant, the negative reviews say more about the reviewer than about the film (they may have an overpowering ego problem); watch once, wait a week or two, then watch it with the commentary, than watch it again: I will use this film to test if people are on the same wavelength as me. Brilliant!
IT ALL DEPENDS October 10, 2009 Mr. J. Herod (Britain) I was surprised that Guy Ritchie made this film. His other films were fun. This was stylish and well acted. Also it was a great way to cover the issue of what really controls us. I agree with the reviewer who considers the negative reviewers as having an issue with their egos. As the film illustrated people will destroy you if you point out how they are controlled. For me it is great to see a populist director do something as challenging and interesting. Jason Statham was great.
cereberal pulp direction for ritchie October 9, 2009 John Tearney (YORK UK) i only saw the second half of this film on tv but even that was enough to convince me that this was a great new genre of gangster movie.ritchie has crammed this opus with so much from other cult flicks that he has done for the ouvre what tarantino did for the war movie with inglorious basterds in that he has his characters moving thru a familiar film landscape but the unfamiliar happens throughout courtesy of ideas pinched from other works. the linking together of scenes with philosophical adages was pilfered from 97's "ghost dog;the way of the samurai". the puzzle within a puzzle aspect of the narrative gave the film a feel of pink floyds "the wall" where the main character stumbles toward some great cathartic finale when in fact it is the main bad guy that has the paradox of the futility of his existence......or does he?? identity and profound purpose also weave themselves into the plot as well as the thinking of General zhao's "Art of war" how to ultimately beat your opponent most effectively. One of the most watchable aspects of this work is the total committment of the acting against the multiple layers of the script and the often bizarre nature of the characters and their actions. This is not a crowd pleasing movie. Ritchie knew this from the start. You can tell this by the style he evolves throughout it. Maturing to cinematic elegance and taking you on an argento-esque descent to the infernal depths of neuvo-gangster hell. Put it this way it was interesting and dynamic enough to make me want to see the first half....very soon. One to be appreciated somewhere down the line by the masses.maybe!!!
