On the Air. Unaware May 5, 2008 Andrew Kerr (Scotland) 20 out of 24 found this review helpful
Let me introduce to you Truman Burbank. A thoughtful and hard working thirty something insurance salesman, who works and lives every day of his life in the paradise like town of Sea Haven. All and all, Truman leads what most people would call a happy life. He has a good job, he's trying for a baby with his beautiful wife who works as a Nurse. And his best friend who would "...happily walk in front of a bus" for him. However things are not what them seem. Unknown to Truman his entire world is nothing less than fake. The town of Sea Haven when he grew up is simply a massive television studio with cameras everywhere (even on the buttons of people jackets.) His best friend is just an actor, his wife and his mother are just actresses. Every move he makes is constantly being broadcast live and unedited to the entire world and he has such a fan base that some people "leave him on all night for comfort." But through a series of events Truman starts to realise himself that in this perfect world something isn't quite right. As he puts it "The whole world seems to evolve" around him, and he becomes determined to discover the truth at any cost.

br /The Truman Show is a really entertaining and fantastic film that deals with reality and how we perceive it. The acting throughout is great and hauntingly believable. Jim Carrey is at his personal best and is simply sensational as Truman Burbank. He is backed up by Ed Harris and Laura Linney who are as equally stellar in their roles. The Truman Show works on so many levels. The film is deep with hidden meaning. At times the script is nothing less than genius. We are given the perfect mixture of mystery, suspense, deception, romance, humour, ironic and tragic. So basically everything that makes a film good. And it works so well. The Truman show was ahead of its time and I don't know why it wasn't that successful. Sure it was nominated for three Oscars but it deserves so much more. It is truly a masterpiece of epic proportions and the ending is everything you could possibly hope for. You will be on the edge of your seat the whole time. We're also given a few good special features that add to the value of an already very good value dvd.

br /Despite all the hidden meaning and philosophical subplots, The Truman Show is still a very entertaining and comical movie. It's one of those films that children can watch and enjoy for certain aspects and when they are older and more wise to the world they can re-watch it and discover those hidden meanings and appreciate it more. This is a must see and a must own film that can be watched time and time again. Otherwise a perfect film just to stick in the DVD player and sit back and watch.

Jim Carry at his best December 27, 2007 sleepyvinny 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
A great story of 'hidden layers' to reality, and the suggestion that life can be an illusion. It is an illustration of way our lives can be cheapened and commercialised, but it is done in such an entertaining way, that it never gets bogged down in moralising or philosophising. It just plays along with the fun scenario. The weirness starts fairly early on, and it is soon clear that all is not as it seems, but even though 'the game is up' it doesn't lose momentum.

br /The understated ending is perfect - it brings all the threads together in a kind of heartstopping moment, and then leaves it wonderfully open again. Great stuff!
Wow! This is a must see movie November 19, 2007 Aeneas 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a very powerful movie. I have never been a big fan of Jim Carrey, but in this movie he is great and plays the character with much sensitivity apart from humor. Apparently the movie was never a big success in the US, which could be because the subject is too close for comfort.
br /
br /It brings to mind the story by Gurdjieff of the evil magician, as the movie shows how Truman is really not in control of anything, as it is all orchestrated from above. Just like we like to think we are at the top of the food chain and in control of our lives, so too does Truman believe that he makes real choices and that he is free. Little does he know that he is lives in a "cage". To keep Truman from discovering the Truth, the "media" is employed to constantly shape his opinions and to suppress any questioning of the reality in which he lives. This has scary parallels to todays world, where the mainstream media and manufactured opinion polls acts like the ancient Greek chorus in shaping public opinion the way the controllers wish it to be.
br /
br /So definitely a top movie, that won't disappoint. It is a wake-up call to question one's own reality and to whether one is just a machine playing out a script written by someone else.

Jim Carrey can also be dramatic rather than crazy!! May 5, 2008 Mr. T. A. Harker (UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Every time i watch this film, I go up to my bedroom and begin to wonder whether someone is watching me. Before watching the film, i know that it is total nonsense and the fact i could be living in an artificaial world is impossible, but after watching this thought provoking movie your mind bends to consider that the world may not be as it seems.

br /Jim Carrey played the character of Truman perfectly throughout the film, keeping his comic personality, although less than usual (it is easy to see which parts of the film Carrey improvised!!). There are no parts of the movie in which you get bored, and I loved the way that Truman slowly notices small flaws in the fake world that he is living in (especially the part where he notices that people and cars are going in loops)
br /
br /Overall, a brilliant mind-bending film with Carrey at his best!!
Great, thought provoking movie! November 24, 2007 Chris (UK) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
A really interesting movie which follows the life of a man named Truman Burbank, played by Jim Carey. Born into a reality television show, he grows up unknowing that every single person in the little town he lives in is an actor. Every single movement and conversation has been scripted, and every thing surrounding his life is filmed and broadcast as part of a show in the "real world".
br /
br /It follows the standard Hero archetype - which is covered in depth by the American mythology professor, writer and orator, Joseph Campbell - of a human being born into a life of illusion and ignorance who comes to suspect that there is something wrong about his world. He develops a burning curiosity and insight and begins to see through the deception and removes the wool that has been pulled over his eyes for so long. It's a heartwarming film, with a balanced mixture of comedy, romance and a tragic awakening towards the end.
br /
br /Not only does it deal with the potential horrors that may lie in an industry bent on transmitting - for entertainment - so called "reality television", but is actually a stunning metaphor and portrayal of the drama that lies in wait for every human being.

br /Should be watched hand in hand with the Matrix. Very thought provoking indeed!
