A very emotional and touching movie October 18, 2007 P. DATTA (Stockton on Tees, Teesside) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Provoked is a very emotional and touching movie. The story is about how one woman faced overwhemling odds against her, in favour of freedom from jail due to case of continued and rentless abuse from an evil and bullying husband. She understandbly placed the law in her own hands and paid the heavy price. Her case attracted huge publicity via woman rights campaign groups in a successful attempt for a retrial at the high court. The first trial overlooked certain facts, which I will not go in details as the movie will reveal it all.

br /The issue of domestic violence from abusive hubands is well documented in the movie. The legal formalites are a little complex to grasp, but had a significant bearing on the jurdical aspect of the UK legal system. Her case touched millions of heart and gained sympathy even from prison inmates. That is the general gist of the story.
br /
br /Aishwarya Rai maybe criticised a little unfairly for her acting, but she provides a solid performance as this couragable lady who maintained great dignity. The story is true and is well delivered for dealing with a high compex legal case. I felt like crying in certain phases of the movie. If you want to watch a movie that is touching and dramatic, watch Provoked. I do not want give any unnecessary criticism to the movie. It deserves praise for recreating the events of this real life story into a feature length movie. The events contribued to a legal victory, which appear to be remotely not possible. Fascinating movie to watch for the subject it tackled well.

i am currently studying about the difference manslaughter and murder at my college course. i am studying paralegal course and i am hoping to become a lawyer. the teacher bought this film to one of our classes and it was an amazing film. it showed the difficulties in proving provocation and diminished responsibility and also introduced battered womens syndrome to the courts in the UK.

br /brilliant film and i will recommend it to anyone who is studying law and also people who love true stories as this is a true story.
Provoked (2006) September 20, 2007 Sonia (United Kingdom) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found this film to be extremely moving as it portrays the real life story of a woman who has endured both mental and physical abuse from her husband and shows her struggle to get justice. Aishwarya plays the role of Kiranjit Alluwalia's character beautifully. Aishwarya has already established herself as a fabulous award winning actress and in this film has shown just how versatile she can be and in my opinion deserves an award for her acting in this film. Her relationship with the other characters in the film, particularly Miranda Richardson is very touching and all the main characters in the film have provided exceptional performances in portraying this heart felt story about Kiranjit.
br /
br /I can't understand why people say the film is boring and that the main actress Aishwarya's rendition of the character is weak. Aishwarya has always done justice to her roles and the director has handled this film with great poise and class.
br /
br /I found some scenes to be highly disturbing and really felt for Kiranjit and all the pain, hurt and anguish that she must have endured. I'm not quite sure what people expect from a true story as some people have said that the film is boring. If people find the real life story of a woman who is mentally and physically abused by her husband for over a decade boring then I think that shows why there are so many women today that are in the same position and suffering in silence.
br /
br /We should be proud of such films as they are trying to highlight serious issues and give other woman the faith, belief and courage to stand up for their rights and teaches them that there is more to life and that they deserve better.
br /
br /I would thoroughly recommend this film to people who are interested in the depiction of true life stories, women who may be victims of abuse themselves and for those people who want to try and make a difference. My heart goes out to Kiranjit and I am proud that she stood up for her rights and has moved on in her life and achieved all that she has. I think that she is an inspiration to all those women out there who are going through exactly the same.
br /
br /Everyone in life has the right to choose how they want to live and should not be dictated to and have to endure abuse at the hands of someone else.

Aishwarya is very good September 8, 2007 ML (United States) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
The film could have been better--it plays very much like a tv movie but it's helped tremendously by a very moving and sensitive performance by Aishwarya Rai.
Woman is the slave of the slaves. Yes she is. Think about it. October 11, 2007 Gerry O'neill (Morrisville, NC United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film seemed very promising at the outset. Although I generally am suspicious of productions based on true stories I was aware of this case from the BBC News and decided to give it a try.

br /The notion of a film based on true life experiences from within the Indian culture is still rather strange given the hostility of the Indian sub-continent communities to Western interpretations of their customs and traditions. However, it is a sign of the vibrancy of Asian cinema which is holding up those traditions to the light of modern and post-modern views of the world.
br /
br /The beginning of the movie is very promising where we follow the perpetrator of the attack up the stairs and into the bedroom where oil is doused on the sleeping man. As circumstances unfold we are introduced into the world of the wife as a mere chattel of a husband who treats her as he pleases. For all of the pomp and festivities of the Asian wedding what we discover is a medieval division of labour in a household which degenerates into abuse and humiliation with in-laws turning a blind eye because it is the custom to do so.
br /
br /The recent incidences of honour killings in the UK as well as the barbaric treatment of the woman who was subjected to multiple rape in Pakistan due to some offence committed by her brother suggests that these experiences still occur, but behind closed doors and silent communities throughout the world.
br /
br /As the film develops with the wife being imprisoned in the alien world of a woman's prisonwhere she meets antagonism and racialism apparently based upon the ignorance of her way of life is in some ways enlightening. Whilst she becomes the focus of attention of a women's support group organised by more modern Asian women, she is befriended by her cell-mate who, unbeknowns to the rest of us, has a brother who is a high powered lawyer.
br /
br /Ultimately right wins out and a slight crack appears in the cultural barbarity which many Asian women are confronting each and every day. What I found to be a great let down was the sort of happilly ever after type ending which oddly reflects a scene in the Tall Guy where everyone bands together in support including the prison bully. Very Disneyesque in a goody two shoes sort of way. This really was a major letdown for me in a drama which has significant cultura implications.
br /
br /This film reminded me very much of movies which came from China in the early years once restrictions were eased. Whereas in those films, difficult social and political situations were addressed in a sensitive way which got the point across, Provoked seemed to miss the opportunity.
br /
br /Well shot, well acted with a reasonable storyline, I would still recommend this movie. Good but not great but one that should be watched by as many men as possible. Some of the attitudes exposed herein can still be found, particularly among industrial workers, in many western countries. There are lessons there for us all.
