5 out of 5 stars Forget "The Wrestler". Watch the original.   July 12, 2009

The idiots who designed the cover for this dvd thought it would be a good idea to grab peoples attention by placing the slogan "Forget Rocky! This is the real thing!" Because "Homeboy" was advertised as a "boxing" movie it failed to be appreciated by those expecting another "Raging Bull". This is not a "Boxing" movie, even though the protagonist is a punch-drunk boxer. His occupation is a metaphor for the way life treats him and his willingness to put up with it for prize money. The premise of the film is concerned with how Johnny Walker, a loose-living, punch-drunk, aggressive, second-class boxer views those around him. The film is more about how those around him interact with him and how his decisions affect those characters. The scenes where we see and hear the world through punch-drunk eyes and ears lets us realise that Walker is totally detached from the world around him and seeks stability and comfort. The acting in this film is superb, the direction low-key but forceful, the story-line utterly compelling. A fantastic piece of cinema. If you are torn between buying this or Rourke's latest film, "The Wrestler", get "Homeboy" first. The original and best.

It's not the greatest movie ever made but everything else about this purchase was A-OK! Thank you! 80)

3 out of 5 stars A pretty much forgotten film   December 13, 2007

The basic story...Johny (Mickey Rourke) is a aging alcoholic boxer who strikes a relationship with a wise guy crook Wesley (Christopher Walken) and also starts a romance with a carousel worker. Later on Wesley tries to involve him in some of his criminal activities... br /This downbeat 1988 film contains great performances from its two leads but with its constant grim feel was completely ignored back on its initial release. It's a shame as "Homeboy" though far from perfect is a well made film with ok fight scenes and a interesting none glamorous story. The film was Mickey Rourke's project and he spent years developing a script only for it to go straight to video hell when it came out. The gloomy feel won't be to all tastes but with its long time unavailability i'd say this cheap dvd release is well worth picking up.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite Rocky!   July 8, 2009
Mr. A. J. Ralph (Torquay,England)
Mickey Rourke is a great actor but this is not really as well written as it could have been and he just didn't pull it off as a boxer.I guess it's fun to watch and it has all the great potential to be a great movie but for me it just didn't do it.
