| Customer Reviews: You'll love this if you're an Alice in Wonderland fan! July 5, 2008 Ms. S. M. GUERREIRO (Nottingham, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I rate this film with 5 stars for the simple reason that Amazon won't let me give it 6 or 7... or more. I'm a self-confessed Alice in Wonderland fanatic, since my childhood days of watching an animated series on television. Of course I read the books, and consequently have watched every single adaptation I found along the way. I even have decorations of Alice around the house (that sad, I know!), but oh my, I dare say.... this is the most brilliant film of them all! I simply have lost count of the times I have watched this film, I must know it by heat by now (not that I didn't know the story and the book by heartalready anyway!!)
br /But I think even if you have never come across Alice in your wanderings, you're going to love this. The cast is simply fantastic with excellent performances. My vote for the best scene goes for the Mad Hatter's Tea Party with Martin Short, which somehow does makes it so unfair to the whole rest of the scenes, which are absolutely delightful.
br /
br /My only regret is that I never had the chance to watch this at the cinema... can you imagine how wonderful it would have been??

br /Honesly, you must buy this... it's an amazing entertainment!
Enchanting December 14, 2008 Mr. A. Upton (england) I wasn't sure about this but took a chance and this is now my fave version of Alice. So well acted by everyone involved. A good pace, interesting sets. My fave is Gene Wilder singing Turtle Soup. Lovely for kids and adults.

Fun, but not definitive July 13, 2008 Jon Hancock (Manchester, UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Thanks to some excellent performances and wonderful Henson creatures this version of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" truly sparkles in places. The star-heavy cast is rarely a burden, as sometimes happens when signing a big name seems more important than choosing appropriate actors, and there are delightful scenes aplenty, even when the script departs from the original, which it unfortunately does all too often.

br /Thanks to a peculiar combination of cutting elements of Carroll's story and dialogue and inserting new material too much of this film has a disjointed and chaotic air about it that manages to be merely confusing rather than conveying the madness and dream-like nature of Wonderland. Some of the changes work well enough (the Gryphon becomes considerably more cultured than in the book thanks to a splendid bit of voice work by Donald Sinden, for example) and many of them make little real difference to the story, such as a jury consisting entirely of guinea pigs rather than an assortment of birds and animals. Others are less successful, particularly the beginning and end of the film where a wholly superfluous tale of Alice being afraid to sing in public and Wonderland giving her the confidence to do so has been tacked on, presumably to impart some sort of moral message.
br /
br /Least satisfying of all is that this isn't actually a film of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" alone but also includes elements of "Through the Looking Glass", spliced rather gracelessly into the story. Two films, one for each book, would have been better, but under the circumstances the scenes with Tweedledum and Tweedledee (nicely played by the heavyweight pairing of George Wendt and Robbie Coltrane) are a much better fit than the encounter with Christopher Lloyd's White Knight.

br /Children will find some parts of the film baffling but the whole spectacle will pull them along. Adults might be left somewhat bemused by the choices made in this production, but enough of it is excellently done to make one generous towards its faults. The definitive "Alice" has yet to be made, but this is still a very enjoyable film with plenty to delight the viewer.
No no NO! November 6, 2009 M. Ottewill What on earth were the film makers thinking? Turning Carol's masterpiece into a saccharine, syrupy, sentimental strings and oboe accompanied faithless adaptation is a crime beyond compare. You don't need special effects to make a great adaption, you just need to be faithful to the books unsettling mix of dark comedy and terror. Why must film makers persist in sanitising children's classics? File with the Northern Lights adaption under AVOID. PS The 1970s Fiona Fullerton film is not perfect but much much better.
