4 out of 5 stars Very surprised by the bad reviews, this is a very enjoyable thriller   April 15, 2008

Professional hitman Morgan Freeman gets caught by police and then escapes during a car crash, but happens to run into John Cusack on a fishing expedition with his son. Morgan warns Cusack to walk away and pretend he saw nothing, but Cusack, much to his son's dismay, decides he's going to take Morgan in and return him to justice. The trouble is a team of Morgan's fellow villains are frantically trying to find Morgan themselves, so Cusack and son have to get Freeman back to civilisation (they're in the middle of a forest), whilst also avoiding Freeman's team. br / br /I don't understand why people think this storyline is so weak as is makes for a compelling and suspenseful film as it turns out Freeman genuinely doesn't want to see Cusack and his son come to harm and wants to escape as much for their benefit as his. There is also a twist to the story when one of Freeman's team double-crosses him. br / br /This is a very original storyline with Freeman playing the likable villain and Cusack trying to simultaneously bring a villain to justice and improve the relationship with his son, as the film progresses a strange bond develops between the three, this film is definitely worth checking out, Cusack and Freeman are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Autopilot but gets you to the destination   February 14, 2009

I watched this after having read some of the reviews fully expecting it to be dire and found that it was well structured and mildly enjoyable. Perhaps for many it doesn't have enough violence or special effects...for me it had more than enough. The charge that the script is awful really doesn't stand up in relative terms. At worst it's average- which is another way of saying perfectly adequate- and a lot less clumsy than that of some big hollywood blockbusters. There was a reasonable attempt at delineating all the characters, almost a standard Hollywood of doing it, but still pushing the right buttons without making me groan too much. br /Like many, I watched it because I enjoy Morgan Freeman and John Cusack and they didn't disappoint. So, it's an average vehicle driven well. I reject the idea that it was entirely predictable or had a sloppy ending. I found the denouement- or epilogue- quite satisfying, and I thought it was well directed with good support from minor characters.

I'm wondering what I've missed after seeing the average rating on this movie. It doesn't promise to be anything thought provoking or action packed. It's very 'Morgan Freemen', somewhere between the two! I found the story interesting and the acting (esp Mr Freemen) fantastic. He plays the role of a hitman who is unwittingly caught out by fate and has to escape so he doesn't miss making his hit. Luckily, he doesnt work alone and the men he hired have to help bust him out of jail in order to complete the job and hence get paid. Things don't quite go to plan and he ends up in the hands of an ex-cop and his son who are on a camping trip. What follows is a cat and mouse chase through the mountains etc. br /I enjoy the intelligent yet witty (in a sarcastic way) conversation that Frank and Ray have leading them to form a certain sort of respect/bond with each other. br /As per action movie, there are a few dead bodies and a bit of double crossing but nothing dramatic. br /

3 out of 5 stars enjoyable, I thought, though not a great film   November 24, 2007

I'm startled that so many reviewers disliked this film. I watched it on a flight back from China when, really, all you want is a story that holds your interest, and it did that. It has a rather sloppy ending - the Freeman character is not likeable if you consider what he does and why, but he ends up after Cusack's character as a kind of soul-mate and second hero. There is suspense and plenty of action. Cusack acts well and Freeman does his usual gravel-voiced turn implying wisdom, character and a kind of weary superiority, and all of that fits the film well. I liked it, though I wouldn't want to see it twice.
