| Customer Reviews: Velvet Goldmine is 'the best thing since sliced beatles' June 15, 2009 M. McGhee (England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I cannot comprehend the confusion that this quirky and unconventional movie provokes in the minds of some people. I love this film, it's sexy, fun, aesthetically pleasing, and deliciously over the top.
br /The connection with Oscar Wilde and his childhood ambition to become a 'pop idol' spawns the idea that the classic poets were the originators of the artistic sex, drugs, rock n' roll lifestyle that is explored in the movie. The plot concerning the brooch is not intended to be historically accurate, but instead adds a beauty to the story, and acts as a motif that connects past and present events. The film uses fantastical imagery (including a flying saucer), which adds a surreal edge. The film doesn't imply that homosexuals are the spawn of aliens (as another reviewer suggested!)...this indeed would be extremely far-fetched. There are lots of references to heaven and the stars, which is an idea employed by poets during the enlightenment, implying that the characters have stumbled upon their own divine movement, adding to the idea of revolution and freedom.
br /They are loosely based on real rock stars, but concentrates more on the musical love affair with America and England.
br /Love the faux seventies music and glamerous costumes, I can't understand the bad reviews.
This is a good film, don't listen to the reviewers August 25, 2008 Rosy Egg (Pontypool) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
As I have exhausted my video version I am going to buy it on dvd. I can not understand the bad reviews this gets. It is a fantastic view of underground and glam rock loosely based on famous figures but having its own identity. The music is good, the fantasy is good and the actors are good. Yes, the story is unbelievable but so what? All in all this film is good fun and one that can be watched again and again.
a hedonist fantasy September 28, 2008 K. Aaron (Manchester, UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I can never make my mind up if I like this film or not, it's certainly not 'easy' viewing, you have to concentrate on it. There's more than a nod to Oscar Wilde in it - if you read the Ellmann bio you'll find much of the script is lifted straight out of it. And the whole theory that homosexuals are in some way 'aliens' sent to earth to make society advance faster is a little far-fetched, although one can see where they're going with it. I do like the historical scope of the film though, the move from the 1850s through to the 1990s, signified in the way all flamboyant celebrities seem to be linked by an intergalatic hatpin! It's a film with a huge vision, but ultimately probably not a strong enough script to see it through; in places it seems to get muddled and lost in its own paradox. I love it best for its pure homage to the 1970s though, the outrageous costumes (the transformation of the dowdy wardrobe assistant is perfect, and it's not often Eddie Izzard is the most conservatively-dressed person on set) the mods and rockers, and the belief that sex, drugs and rock n roll are the only things worth living for. It's a hedonist fantasy in every sense, with a little bit of glitter thrown in.
Do not expect much from this May 28, 2008 F. Panin (Holland) 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
A rather confused movie, whose plot is exhausted basically after 10' minutes. The underlining message is not clear. With good will, one could only appreciate the reconstruction of some "glam rock" views, and part of the soundtrack. However, do not expect "the story of glam rock", or anything else in fact. It dissolves as soon as it reaches the end - if you make it there.
