Amazon.co.uk Review
You can never accuse director Danny Boyle of lacking ambition. ISunshine/I sees one of Britain's most successful directors switching genre once more, as he tackles this gripping science fiction flick about a quest to re-ignite the dying sun. And he nails it, too, adding another plus to a CV that's already covered a kids' film (IMillions/I), a big Hollywood blockbuster (IThe Beach/I), horror (I28 Days Later/I), and a pair of British classics (ITrainspotting/I and IShallow Grave/I). P Bursting out of the gate at a terrific pace, ISunshine/I then doesn't take its foot off the accelerator for much of its near-two hour running time. Set around the crew of the Icarus II who find themselves on a life-saving mission, things soon start going awry, and while you'll find no plot spoilers here, Boyle proves a dab hand at ratcheting up tension on the way to the big finale. P If anything, it's the finale to ISunshine/I that does let the side down, not quite living up to the standard of what preceded it. But such is the strength of the ride to that point that it's hard to complain. Especially when the cast, led by the always-magnetic Cillian Murphy, put in believable performances and get heavily into the spirit of the film. P Topped off with cracking effects that belie its modest budget, ISunshine/I is a real treat, not just for sci-fi fans, but for anyone who likes a strong, tense, thrilling night in front of a movie. --IJon Foster/I

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   November 5, 2007

A lot of people have given this negative reviews on here. I've read their reviews and the main criticisms seem to be: br / br /1. It's boring. That's true, if you're the kind of person who can't sit through any film that doesn't have gunfire and explosions through 90% of the movie. br / br /2. It's not a good Sci-Fi movie like Armageddon. Well, the fact that these people think Armageddon is great tells us something about their taste. br / br /3. It's scientifically inaccurate. I find it hilarious that these critics think they know more about physics than Dr Cox, the scientific advisor who provides a commentary on the DVD. Of course there is artistic licence, but there's nothing wrong with that. br / br /4. The end doesn't make sense. No, the end is confusing - there's a big difference. br / br /5. The characters are paper thin. Again, not true. There is so much depth to the characters, but you need to actually think about it. Like any good script, this shows us the depth to the characters, rather than telling us. Look especially at Chris Evans' character. br / br /This is an amazing film, and is easily the best of 2007 (so far). There are plenty of films for the people who didn't like this, but there are only a few movies with the perfect mix of style and substance that Sunshine achieves.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a good old-fashioned science fiction film   July 19, 2007

I detest the term "Sci-fi". Sci-fi is not just an abbreviation of "science fiction". Sci-fi has come to mean women with implausible breasts in skimpy Lycra, extraterrestrials sporting American accents and plotlines revolving around the romantic involvements of the Captain and some wafty alien bird in a short skirt. br / br /Sci-fi is just a way of making "Space-Opera" sound better. br / br /Sunshine surprised me. I was expecting a good old cheesy job like Event Horizon - which I note it has already been compared to. However, in my opinion Sunshine has a LOT more substance, and is one of the most hardcore science fiction films I have seen in a long time. br / br /The average popcorn-munching cinema goer will be bored and disappointed. This film requires concentration and a high level of emotional involvement for it to be enjoyed. br / br /Reading the other reviews - the person who compared it to 2001: A Space Odyssey was about right. If you're into sci-fi, this film isn't for you. Science fiction fans only! br / br /I thank you.

5 out of 5 stars A top sci-fi   April 14, 2007

I've never written a review on here before- but i just had to disagree with the review that was already here! Sunshine is one of the best films i've seen in years. br / br /The set is beautiful- and actually constructed for a change. Danny Boyle really pulls off the clostrophobia of alien and the romance and sterility of 2001 all in one. and i for one loved all the exterior shots! I really don't think boyle went overboard on the CGI. having an on-board physist really made for an interesting (and different) ship. br / br /The performances are wonderful without exception. But Hiroyuki Sanada and Cillian Murphy really shine. Everything is subtle and underplayed- just the way a big sci-fi should be. br / br /The underworld score is just fantastic. Giving a feel of unease and hyperactivity all the way through. The direction is mindblowing (especially the end sequence)... I just loved this film. br / br /and remember- when you buy this fantastic film- you're supporting the british film industry!

5 out of 5 stars Scorching sci-fi!   June 21, 2007

I went to watch Sunshine when it first came out in South Africa, and, before it was even over, I had already ticked it off as one of the most awesome movies of my life. Since that day, it has remained imprinted on my mind, and it always will be. br / br /The basic plot is as follows: the Sun is dying, and six men and two women by the names of Capa, Kaneda, Mace, Harvey, Searle, Trey, Corzin and Cassie are sent on a spaceship, the Icarus 2 (This seems like a preposterous name, keeping in mind the legend, but it adds a sense of irony to the film), carrying a bomb with the density of Manhattan to fire at the Sun in the hopes of 'Creating a star within a star'- direct quote here - and thus saving humankind from death. But then a distress signal from the Icarus 2's predecessor, the missing Icarus 1, is picked up, and a potentially fatal mistake is made by Trey... br / br /This psychological sci-fi edge-of-your-seat thriller is bound to become famous for its scientific realism, along with its raw portrayal of human emotions in the claustrophobia and stress of a spaceship carrying the final hope for mankind on a journey fraught with danger. The acting is chillingly convincing and, although there is a bit of a bloop in some of the final scenes concerning human survival, the script is intense, insightful and thought-provoking. It's amazing how, midst all the blood (literally! Not really a movie for the faint hearted), sweat and tears, the film manages to throw in some truly beautiful images of space. br / br /I recommend this movie to anyone who wants something a little different to watch, and am waiting in anticipation for it to come on DVD. A few more stars for the rating, please! br /

5 out of 5 stars SERIOUS SCI-FI.....FANTASTIC!   April 16, 2007

Having just seen the movie at the cinema, I had to know if a release date has been set for the DVD because I will definitely be buying it...it may even become a Blu-Ray favourite. br / br /The crew of Icarus II travel to the sun in a last ditch attempt to give it a solar sized kick in the black spots and prevent Earth from freezing over. The majority of the film is a catalogue of complications along the way, leading to the crew of eight discovering the distress beacon of Icarus I (the original mission to re-ignite the sun which lost contact with Earth 6 or 7 years earlier) found orbiting Mercury. br / br /Sunshine is a brilliant movie taking influences from films like 2001 and Alien for the set designs, as well as feelings of claustrophobia, helplessness and being so far away and cut-off from home. There are elements of Event Horizon here, Silent Running and Armageddon to name a few more. A film which incorporates touches from classics such as these has to do well and certainly belongs 'up there' with them in my opinion. br / br /Great acting from Cillian Murphy who plays the ships physicist Capa and Chris Evans (engineer Mace) and Benedict Wong who acts brilliantly as the guilt stricken navigator, Trey. Fantastic special effects and a riveting story....you could have heard a pin drop in our cinema when the ships computer announces the presence of an unknown "fifth crew member". br / br /Go see it, go hire it or buy it as soon as it's released - I for one will be waiting. br / br /ADS, North Lincs.
