pA confined setting is a useful tool for thriller-makers, and iVacancy/i is definitely boxed in: a run-down motel way, way off the Interstate, the kind of place where unsuspecting movie characters go to get stabbed to death in the shower. If iVacancy/i doesn't quite live up to its Hitchcockian forbears, at least it provides 80 minutes of well-designed mayhem. You know somebody's paying attention just from the opening credits, a clever vortex with pounding music by Paul Haslinger. Then we meet unhappy couple Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale, driving along in the dark and forced to stay at the Pinewood Motel after a car breakdown. There's a night man (Frank Whaley, iWorld Trade Center/i) in the tradition of Dennis Weaver's iTouch of Evil/i gargoyle, but the real mess of trouble is waiting in room number 4./p pDirector Nimrod Antal, who scored a stylish international hit with the Hungarian thriller iKontroll/i, squeezes maximum juice out of the Route 66 atmosphere of the motel, although the movie doesn't get under your skin the way iKontroll/i did. Wilson and Beckinsale are a little too marquee-namish for this kind of heavy-breathing work, and the script doesn't give them much to play with. But hey, it's not that kind of movie. Where it really belongs is on the top half of a drive-in double bill, or maybe as a nightmare-scenario TV movie from the Seventies. Either way, it works. i--Robert Horton, Amazon.com/i/p

5 out of 5 stars KNOCK KNOCK WHO'S THERE?   January 13, 2008

I will start off by saying this film was really short about 111 minutes or so it's tells you on the back of the DVD cover 1 hr 22mins which is about right time the credits at the start and finish of the film have rolled over. My other moan is the ending is one of the worse I have seen which was a real shame because this was a little gem of a film. The story we have all seen before a couple breaking down there happens to be a motel close they stay overnight and things start going wrong. For some reason this time it really worked well I don't know why but the film just moved along at a electric pace and it kept you interested. The acting was top draw and there were plenty of on the edge of your sofa moments from start to finish. Don't be put off by the negative reviews this really is a very good film that is worth a slot in anybodys DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars I DONT UNDERSTAND THE PEOPLE WHO KNOCKED THIS FILM   August 25, 2007

This film was one i was unsure of, even though i fancied it when i first saw the trailer, due to the fairly average star rating and some very negative viewer comments. br /It is actually a very well crafted, edge of the seat, thriller in a Hitchcockian style. It has more scares and jumps than the usual serial killer type flick and does away with the usual generous helping of gore of this genre while still capturing the terror and fear you would feel if in a similar situation. The characters behave very naturally and appear human rather than heroic. br /I can only assume the lack of copious amounts of corn syrup and female nudity means this was somewhat of a disappointment to those expecting a gore fest however if you want to be genuinely scared by a top notch thriller this is the one for you. br /I highly recommend this film

5 out of 5 stars A HITCHCOCK Style Thriller At It's BEST   August 25, 2007

There seems to be so many reviewers that totally misunderstand what sort of movie this is !! It IS NOT a horror movie - it is an excellently acted Hitchcock style thriller - it will keep you on the edge of your seat with the twists amd turns . If you want a really good modern thriller actioned packed from the minute the unfortunate couple arrive at the motel - this is the one for you - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED .

this film is about an arguing couple who are going on a journey and they get lost and stop by a petrol station to work out where they are. someone who works there fixes there car so he says. so they set out on the road again but then the car brakes down so they walk back to "smalleys gas station" but it is closed so they see a motel next door. then the journey begins. with strange goings on like people banging on all there doors and phones ringing without anyone at the other end. the t.v doesn't work so david puts a tape in when the tape plays a shocking surprise happens as murders and other attacks have happened in there room. they try to escape but how do they with cameras obviously watching them 24/7. then later on in the film they find a strange way of how they keep getting in there room like on the videos. good story line great actors and actress overall a brilliant film
