5 out of 5 stars Would have made Buk smile   May 10, 2009

This is a low (no?) budget movie made by a bunch of Norwegian Bukowski enthusiast - and it still has Matt Dillon and Lili Taylor in it. Clearly, it is a work of love. br / br /The lack of budget shows at every turn. Since 1950s Los Angeles couldn't be rebuilt without money, the story was simply transported to the present time, regardless of the fact that some details don't make sense that way, like ice deliveries for example. br /To me, none of that matters. I had come to this movie to see if they had managed to capture Buk's spirit, and the answer is yes. Dillon speaks just like Bukowski (that same humorous drawl, with sentences trailing off, as though suggesting hidden meanings); he even pushes his chin out throughout the movie to make a better lookalike. Lili Taylor has courage enough to make a very credible Jan, insane, down and out, and lovable at the same time. br /The movie follows the book, but (necessarily leaves out a few chapters. Some poems are added. br / br /I found the whole thing hugely entertaining, and I keep it on my shelf right next to John Dullans must-have Bukowski documentary Born Into This. br /Buk said he didn't like Barfly, and he hated that Italian film with Ben Gazzara in it. Somehow I feel confident this would have made him smile.

I have always admired the way Charles Bukowski for the way he reduced writing to the equivalent of bare-knuckle boxing, all boorish machismo and self-regard. br /Between menial jobs Chinaski (Bukowski) gambles, smokes, drinks relentlessly, and screws with determination, while nursing a noxious superiority complex. br / br /Bukowski is a poetic drunk who fancied himself a lone champion of the truth in a world of bourgeois lies. His boozing, aimless exploits may come off as somewhat romantic on the printed page. Seeing them portrayed visually inevitably shows them to be depressing and pointless. Perhaps the best advice for filmmakers pondering future adaptations is the single line that appears on Bukowski's headstone in Green Hills in Los Angeles: "Don't Try."

The life of a 'professional alcoholic' and writer is obviously not an easy one. Here we get a snapshot of the kind of hand-to-mouth existence that the genuinely hilariously and insightful person Bukowski was. Matt Dillon, in the lead role, playing the part with much admiration, knowledge and affection, manages to capture beautifully the character and mannerisms of man who is torn, frayed and relies on alcohol to get him thru. br / br /Although the movie has a good supporting cast, it does fall down a little by only scatching the surface of Bukowski's life and drunken exploits. For those already not familiar with Bukowski, this movie may appear to be be a little vague and confusing. However, it is well worth a watch to those who are initiated. br / br /Basically, if you can pick it up cheap, then do so. A good addition to any movie collection that doesn't rely on the tired formula of the Hollywood blockbuster. This is a warm, funny, real life, human interest story. br / br /Would recommend "Barfly" (starring Mickey Rourke) as a much superior movie, with greater detail and understanding of the subject. That's if you can get your hands on it. br / br /If you like FACTOTUM or BARFLY then try : TREES LOUNGE(Steve Buscemi) or SIR HENRY AT RAWLINSON END(Viv Stanshall)
