4 out of 5 stars Another take on superheroism   June 26, 2009
Uenna (London)
Having never really paid attention to this movie, my first encounter with it was last weekend when I caught the tail end of the rise of the silver surfer on my daughter's computer, intrigued because I hate incomplete stories, I found this duo box set at a bargain price and could not resist viewing it. br / br /Little did I know that this is based on another comic superheroes, (being a superman fan you will think I would have heard of this), but this time the hero's did not come from another planet but in the first movie we see how they suffered an intergalactic accident that conferred them their superpowers. It is interesting to note that we human beings are very much fascinated by the concept of having `powers' and we can see from the number of movies that are made around this concept how much this fascinates us. So the first movie shows us how they got their superpowers and laid the foundation of how they became the fantastic four. br / br /My favourite has to be the 2nd movie the Rise of the Silver Surfer. For the simple fact, that it challenges the mind, and forces you to ask some pertinent questions about our planet. In this movie an alien force is wreaking havoc on the earth and the evil protagonist Victor Van Doom who was temporarily silenced at the end of the first movie has been awakened by the power/life force of the silver surfer's board. The silver surfer in trying to protect his own world and the one he loves, has to serve the destroyer of the universes by drawing him away from his own world; an act he feels leaves him with no choice, but to serve the destroyer. br / br /What I liked most about this movie is not the fact that the fantastic four have to use their powers to save the universe or the romance and wedding of the lead characters, Dr. Richard Reed and Susan Storm; but simple things like learning to work as a team, that in team work there is no `I' a valuable lesson that they all learned in the end especially Johnny, the human torch. Above all I loved Sue's words to the silver Surfer - `you always have a choice', a concept the surfer acknowledged in the end and used to the fullest effect in fighting the destroyer and saving the planet Earth. The big life lesson here is the fact that `we always have a choice' and this begs the question 'what are we human beings doing to save our planet?' Are we serving the destructive forces with our choices or are we serving the forces of good? Since we always have a choice, we should constantly think of how our choices and therefore actions affect our fellow human beings and our planet. I told you this movie forced me to reflect and that is what I loved most about it. br / br /As entertainment value, drama and CGI go, it is up there with the best of them. So whether you like a movie with depth or action-packed or science fiction or romantic- comedy you got it all in one. I suggest you see both as the first one explains the basis of the second one. I really did enjoy watching this and I am sure I will enjoy watching it over and over again. Both DVD'S come with special features as detailed in other reviews and is subtitled in English. ENJOY! br /

3 out of 5 stars Better for your waistline than fried chicken   March 9, 2009

I've recently acquired the Fantastic Four double box set. I'm not proud of it. It's a bit like my fried chicken habit and it even cost less that a maxed out meal at my local takeaway (with many fewer calories). Also, much like fried chicken, even when I was eating/watching it I knew that it's no good for me but I kept going. br / br /The individual films both already have a large number of reviews so I'm not going to add too much. They pretty much jump on the bandwagon of the rebirth of superhero films over the last decade or so and there is nothing in them that you won't have seen elsewhere. To be clear, there is also nothing in these films that I found terrible (although some would disagree, and even I found the fall of Ioan 'Hornblower' Gruffudd to be tragic). Unfortunately there's not a lot to love either. Looking back there's no scene that particularly stands out for me from either film and that, for what is billed as an CGI heavy action film, says a lot. However, I did watch it through to the end so it couldn't have been all bad. br / br /As for the boxed set itself, in my set I got, what I imagine are, the two single disk standalone DVDs in separate normal sized plastic cases but packaged together in an additional cardboard box. As far as I can tell there are only English subtitles on both. As for extras mine had: br / br /F4: Cast commentary, the Fantastic Tour (i.e. video diaries by and with cast and crew) , two music videos (and an album trailer) and, bizarrely, a plug for X Men 3 br /F4RotSS: A bunch of trailers, a couple of commentaries (one from the director and one from the producer + film editors) some extended and deleted scenes, some pre-vis scenes (i.e. very basic animated story boards), a feature on the the 'Fantasticar' and a documentary on some guy's relationship with the Fantastic Four comics. br / br /I can't say that they are going to change your life, but these two films are mildly diverting for a few hours and they are better for your waistline than eating fried chicken...

3 out of 5 stars Fantastic Four/Fantastic Four - Rise Of The Silver Surfer [2005] [DVD]   May 11, 2009

After receiving the dvds I watched the first one Fantastic Four, which I did enjoy, even though I thought it was mainly for youngsters. The special effects were good and the acting reasonable. Well Rise of the silver surfer was not so good. The script just did not grab me and the acting in this one was good at all.
