Another Great Adventure January 5, 2008 MMacKK (Sydney, Australia) 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
Most of these reviewers have it all wrong, comparing this adventure to LWR and really viewing this as an exercise in film making, which it is, but not for the most part.
br /
br /You feel Ewan and Charley's frustrations a lot more this time around, frustrations many reviewers seem to be having also. All the points made about the 'Entourage, with the support vehicles, to me seem unjustified, considering it is made abundantly clear that Africa is Not Europe, and that there is a greater security threat this time round. It was illogical and impossible for Ewan and Charley to go it by themselves with Claudio, as the risk of danger or death, was too high, as was clearly evident.
br /
br /Ewan, Charley, Claudio and the LWD team provide a glimpse into Africa most television shows and films could barely show you, and still give you that sense of adventure, which for me, made me just want to join them, no matter what was in store. Some of the countries and people they meet are, quite frankly, stunning.
br /
br /My only recommendation is that similarly to LWR, they produce a 10 Episode Series, and expand on this fantastic series.
boys are back in town! November 14, 2007 Willy An (UK) 20 out of 32 found this review helpful
i just love it. seen a preview copy and thought the heights of Long Way Round couldn't be repeated but they have. Ewan and Charley really got through some tough days early on and the payback toward the end of the trip is fantastic - amazing sights and sounds.
br /
br /well done guys - can;t wait for the next trip!
Not Just a trip down south! November 18, 2007 Mr. A. Day (Cornwall) 11 out of 18 found this review helpful
This is an adventure, an arduous adventure that can not be taken lightly. The support that Ewan and Charlie need to combat it is immeasurable .The lengthy boarder crossings the forever changing and sometimes gruelling terrain is enough to make most cry but they came out of it smiling because that is what the people of Africa make you do.
br /
br /Having been born in Nairobi, I only spent my first 11 months there, but I have spent 2 months of my adult there as well as holiday in other parts. I managed to get the feel of the place and the people and that is what they have achieved through their journey.
br /
br /This DVD, on the downside will be too short to capture all of the resonance and character of the land,, but will provide a great insight into this journey and prove that this adventure has been many sided in raising funds for UNICEF, giving Ewan and Charlie the ride of their life and the viewers a rich tapestry of the life of the Africans and their land.

br /I too have seen animals in their natural habitat.
Going down... January 7, 2008 Paul Everdark (UK) 10 out of 17 found this review helpful
There's far too much negativity in these reviews. It's fair too say that this isn't as good as Long Way Round but, in all honesty, that was so stratospherically good it was hard to top.
br /If you're being put off by the poor reviews you're reading here, don't be. Rest assured, if you enjoyed the first adventure you will enjoy this one.
br /Okay, clearly because their first outing was such a success they found it a lot easier to prepare and fund their second trip, and it naturally garnered more attention (something they couldn't help if they tired) so this one feels a smoother, less gritty and hard-nosed bike trip. But don't let that put you off, because whereas in Long Way Round they were travelling across the world pretty much for it's own sake, and taking in the sights as they came, in Africa there's a definite sense that they want to discover and learn about the continent. Long Way Down is certainly more focused on Africa itself than the day-to-day grind Charley and Ewan face - it surfaces from time to time, but not as much.
br /
br /So, in conclusion - watch it! It doesn't quite reach the giddy heights of LW Round, but it's not far off, and it's still miles ahead of the rest of the trash clogging up the TV. Thousands of miles, in fact...
br /
br /(NOTE: Somebody clearly has an axe to grind around here; all the positive reviews such as this one have been selected as unhelpful, whereas poor reviews have been selected as helpful. I suggest you take this into account when making your decision regarding this DVD, simply because one or two people are being unreasonably childish).
Thrilling for travel/motorbike fans January 9, 2008 Susana E. Leyva (Chicago, IL) 7 out of 13 found this review helpful
I was a huge fan of Long Way Round, as was the entire world. Here in the U.S., we had to wait much too long to get the series on DVD . When Long Way Down became avialble on DVD and in a format that was universal across all zones, I rushed to get one. After ordering, I got on this site and started to read customer review, which were almost universally negative. Now that I've seen it, I just don't understand this swell of negative customer reviews.
br /
br /If you are a fan of motorbikes or of travel, this is thrilling. And these two guys are so incredibly and contagiously charming. Yes, the episode with Ewan's wife on her bike is an all-time low, but who are we to decide on the McGregor family travel plans? Come on, people! They kept it to under an episode. I was sad when Charlie went offroading on his own.
br /
br /The commaradarie between the boys is lovely. The production values are superb. The BMWs and all that challenging riding is thrilling. The scenery adn the people through Scotland, France, Italy, Africa ... it's a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
br /
br /Frankly, Long Way Round/Down just WORKS. They know how to do it and they know how to make TV out of it. I hope that are many more series to come. And, have faith, if you enjoy motorbikes or travel, there is so very much enjoyment in Long Way Down for you. And, yes, Ewan and Charlie are endless entertainment and inspiration.
