Amazon.co.uk Review Twelve years after iDie Hard with a Vengeance/i, the third and previous film in the iDie Hard/i franchise, iDie Hard 4.0/i finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, iDodgeball/i) who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any iDie Hard/i fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, iDeadwood/i, and Maggie Q, iMission: Impossible 3/i) that seems to be operating under the government's noses. iDie Hard 4.0/i uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of iDie Hard with a Vengeance/i along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the iUnderworld/i franchise), good humour, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. Yippee-ki-ay! i--David Horiuchi/i

McClane is back! September 26, 2007 KM (England) 20 out of 24 found this review helpful
Yippee-ki-yay! At long last (it's been 12 years!) John McClane is back and back in the most explosive and action-packed movie in a long, long time. Taking action films back to the way they are supposed to be - guns, car chases, explosions, tough guys, evil terrorists and a helluva lot of thrills and non-stop excitement.
br /
br /Bruce Willis returns as McClane again, playing the fast-talking, witty tough-guy part from the first 3 films as well as he did 18 years ago. Justin Long plays the likeable computer hacker geek Matt pretty well, sharing the spotlight with Willis with the humourous come-backs and one liners. For the bad guys there's Timothy Olyphanta as Thomas Gabriel, the brains behind the terrorist attack and also quick kicking Maggie Q as Gabriel's ally and love interest, Mai Lihn.
br /
br /The story isn't as brainless as you'd expect - terrorists initiate a plot to bring down the U.S. in a cyber attack, taking out transportation, telecommunications, financial and power networks with systematic hacking known as a Fire Sale. Luckily, NYPD detective McClane is on the case with some help with from computer hacker, Matt Farrell. There's action from the get-go starting off with a gun fight in an apartment to a truck versus fighter jet chase near the end, with tonnes more action in between.
br /
br /This is a top-quality action film that is one of the best films of the genre in years and goes to show that these types of films don't need lovey-dovey side storylines and a complex plot. It needs good guys and bad guys and pure adrenaline filled, over the top action. Brilliant stuff!
Textbook action movie November 18, 2007 Ray Blake (Hemel Hempstead, UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Beautifully paced, well scripted and with some quite extraordinary photography, there is no good reason for this thriller to be a 'Die Hard' movie. But what Bruce Willis brings to the film is - put simply - pain. When Matt Damon or one of those other youngsters takes a knock, they're back on their feet in no time. Watching NYPD detective John McClane whine and curse about his injuries adds a welcome level of realism you rarely see these days.
br /
br /Alongside Willis, the photography is the other star of this piece. Outstanding dolly-shots in traffic compete with ambitious CG sequences to out-wow each other. The effect is mesmerising.
A strong candidate for movie of the year... at least for me November 24, 2007 M. Sobkowiak 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm not big on 'intellectual' movies. I find them trite and boring, as all usually revolve around the same idea. When I want to exercise my brain, I read a book. When I go to the cinema, I expect action. And that's why I love "Die Hard 4.0".
br /
br /The movie doesn't require a slightest bit of thought from you - indeed, using your brain while watching it would pretty much spoil the experience. It's just an action-fest with lots of explosions, realistic special effects, fights to the death, and a stupid plot. 2 hours of simple entertainment. That's what I loved about the "Indiana Jones" movies, and that's why "Die Hard 4.0" is, for me, the movie of the year (yes, it comes higher than "Pirates of the Caribbean 3").
Non Stop Action September 18, 2007 Robert P. Splaine (pattaya) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Before l saw this movie, l'd heard a lot of people saying, he is past it
br /and he cant do the same old thing again. So l went in rather sceptical.
br /From the opening scenes l was spell bound, and other peoples views left my mind.
br /There is always a little humour in the Die Hard's, and there
br / was plenty in this one. The special effects...one word WOW.
br /How the hell did they do that, and next thing another special
br /effect. The plot centres on a computer scam, and the enemy as one may
br /say,has total control of New York, and else where. They can turn the
br /power, gas, phones off, as well as causing havoc with the
br /traffic lights. All of the stunts were well thought out, and
br /not added for the sake of it.
br /If you want an action packed movie, from start to finish this
br /has to be one of the best action movies for many years.
br /Never mind how old Bruce Willis is, his acting is as good as
br /any of his past performance, and his fitness if l'd have
br /been as fit as he is now at 40, l'd be happy man.
br /
br /Settle down, to one fantastic film.
Die Hard 4.0 (With F' Swearing and Blood) October 31, 2007 Mr. N. MAUND (Worcester UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This DVD is uncut, I was so surprised. This is so much more like Die Hard.
br /
br /Trust me, get this version, the cinema was made for a 12 audience. Now it's a 15 on DVD it contains all the swear words and all the missing blood gun shot scenes.
