Editorial Reviews: Amazon.co.uk Review While occasionally clumsy in the way it goes about things, the first season of ITorchwood/I ultimately makes good on its promise to be a science fiction programme for an older market. So while it's spun out from the more family-friendly IDoctor Who/I, it does carve out an edgy, entertaining niche for itself. P The programme follows the adventures of the ITorchwood/I agency (who we met in far more prestigious form at the end of IDoctor Who/I's second series), a small team led by John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness who investigate the extra terrestrial and the paranormal. And across the thirteen episodes of this maiden season, they have a lot to look into, from the likes of a sex-craved alien and cyberwoman, through to cannibalistic foes and strange, spooky fairies. P Admittedly, particularly in the early stages when ITorchwood/I is finding its feet, there are a few missteps, and a little too much side-indulgence in exploring material that the more mainstream IDoctor Who/I wouldn't allow. But it'd be to your folly to write ITorchwood/I off: by the time it gallops into the second half of this first season, the quality is strong, the storylines are interesting, and the show proves to be a real winner. P Intertwining with the narrative of the main IDoctor Who/I show, ITorchwood/I nonetheless then works as an independent programme in its own right, replete with a strong cast of characters (led by the terrific Barrowman) and scripts that have more of an experimental edge to them. It's certainly one of the most interesting science fiction shows Britain has produced in the last decade or two, and there's much to enjoy again and again in this box set. --IJon Foster/I

October 22, 2007 Abominable Snowman Productions 52 out of 63 found this review helpful The greatest thing about the new-Who series is that it focused on an aspect of Doctor Who that had never really been addressed before, the worlds that the Doctor leaves behind him, the influence he has on the world and how he changes it for the better, or for the worse. Examples of this include the new series episodes: Bad Wolf, Love and Monsters, Blink, Army of Ghosts and (to a lesser extent) the Year Five Billion trilogy. It makes us look back on what might of become of some of the characters from the earlier stories in the franchise, like the humans in 'Dalek Invasion of the Earth'. In the case of Torchwood we get to see the things that lurked in the shadows of Kaldor city, or that were just out of site when Nerva mad a full orbit. Specifically we see the world that the Doctor created when he offended the wrong monarch and dropped off the right, brilliant toothed action hero. br / br /The world of Torchwood is one when we get to see what the camera pans away from in the regular Doctor Who series, mixed with a terriffic cast of actors that have you believing every second of the programme. John Barrowman in particular is a firecracker in a great coat, with a flawless charm and a hilariously liberal attitude. You can't help but love him. That came out wrong... br / br /The magnificent casting, coupled with a no-holds-barred sexual tangent make for great viewing and really treat the long-term Who fans with getting to see things that they'd always wished Leela would do when they were fifteen... br / br /Despite these strong sexy and violent elements in the programme, it doesn't stop it from providing heartfelt storylines like Out of Time and Random Shoes. Nor do you lose out with psychological thrillers like Small Worlds, in which you feel the whole fabric of your world shaken just a bit... br / br /All in all, Torchwood makes for excellent television viewing. The first series is a tribute the phenomenal effort of Russel T. Davies in the ongoing New-Who franchise. As always, can wait for more. Slightly patchy but superb entertainment nonetheless. Thomas (Canterbury UK) 37 out of 49 found this review helpful By the time I reached the last episode of Torchwood, the series had developed far beyond my expectations into something rather wonderful. br / br /You could accuse it of slightly over-egging the "adult" tag, at first, but it eventually matured into something a whole lot better than TV Sci-Fi has ever offered us before. br / br /Torchwood joyfully pinched ideas from several well known films and mythologies but added it's own twist to each episode and created something altogether different. It was rarely predictable and quite often genuinely spooky (the fairies, anyone?) br / br /We explored each of the characters and their human frailties but the series never lost it's sense of fun and continually delivered quality science fiction/horror week after week. br / br /I really hope they bring back Bilis in series two, he was a wonderfully creepy character with so much potential. br / br /The continuity between Torchwood and Dr Who should also be applauded. It's nice to see separate dramas that inhabit the exact same universe. br / br /(very late edit!) br /It's odd but I seem to be one of only a few people who thought Season 2 was awful. I just rewatched the season 1 boxset and it is truly astounding with only a couple of weak episodes (Cyberwoman Combat). Episodes like "They keep killing Suzy, Random Shoes and Out of Time are, quite frankly, some of the best TV drama I've seen for years. Beautifully and intelligently scripted with mostly excellent performances.....why does season 1 get such bad press. Even the (oft-trotted-out-complaint about) sex and swearing is nowhere near as overt as you possibly remember. br /Give it another look. It's exceptional. At first I wasn't expecting much from Torchwood, as a life time Doctor Who fan, I felt that any spin off would be substandard. And as I expected I didn't really like the first two episodes of Torchwood but I stuck it out and before I knew what happened, I was hooked and left wanting to watch more. Torchwood has a certain quality about it, which I found addictive. Maybe because it essentially Doctor Who for adults (i.e. more scare, sex, and swears.) Despite some of the episodes being a bit disappointing (such as `Random Shoes') and slightly unbelievably (a dinosaur verses a cyberwoman?) the program generally delivers on a silver platter and each story is powerful and involving. The acting from the lead characters is nothing less than astounding. Especially from John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) and Gareth David Llyod (Ianto Jones). Also the special effects and props have been done to a high standard. Torchwood is full of emotion and everything considered I feel that it is a great program and a great sci-fi show fit for the 21st century. I eagerly await series 2. ONE OF THE GREATEST SHOWS EVER!!! However, after watching just one episode I was hooked. Torchwood is an amazing show on its own without needing the reputation of Doctor Who to make it good. The cast and crew are all truly talented (And in the case of Gareth David Lloyd -Ianto Jones- very very cute as well!) and I am really enjoying Series 2 at the moment, which is even better than the first series! br / br /As an obvious fan of the show, I am really pleased with this Torchwood Boxset. Pinder (Cornwall,UK) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful i thought that this was a great debut series and much prefered it to Doctor Who(as only the first two seeries had aired)when it was on BBC3 for the first time,and series 2 maintained its pace...but this series had lots of originality and won TV awards here in the uk including best genre actor(JOHN BARROWMAN)best actress(EVE MYLES)and best drama. br /now for the episodes- br /Everything Chances-5/5-a great introduction to the show and it really lures you into what the characters are like...and it has a stable storyline for it to stick to,and my god it is a very dark and gritty show,fab performances all around. br / br /Day One-5/5-a very raunchy episode of the show,and again very violent carrying on from where the previous episode finished. br / br /Ghost in the Machine-5/5-a dark and brutal episode that gets viewers into the head of Gwen Cooper,and it is a very good storyline for her character. br / br /Cyberwoman-4/5-weak in some places but nevertheless it is very enjoyable and there is action,but mainly a character driven episode that doesn't require the imagination whatsoever,what it is is what you get. br / br /Small Worlds-5/5-a fantastic episode and very entertaining...and those faeries are horrific...certainly not for lil' kiddies. br / br /Countrycide-5/5-a very eerie episode and very,very intense...who or what is killing the residents of a local village?it feels like a slasher flick...and is certainly more fun than the recent The Cottage. br / br /Greeks Bearing Gifts-5+/5-finally we get a great Tosh episode that gets inside her character and the episode is still one of the shows best. br / br /They Keep on Killing Suzie-5+/5-possibly out of the two series this is my all time favourite episode,basically because the acting,scenes and plot is just incredible and it not only gets us in the mind of mr Harkness it shows us just what he is capable of and how dark and gritty this show can be...without the use of CGI monsters but relies on character and witty dialogue to make it a triumphunt episode and why it stands out as being my favourite,the pace is plain intense that it really does push you to the edge of your seat...and i love that 45 minutes of great television has the power to do that. br / br /Random Shoes-4.5/5-a light episode that by now we have understood what the characters are like we now are introduced to Eugene...and the episode is almost a direct focus on him and the viewer sees right through his eyes it isnt a perfect episode but it is still very good. br / br /Out of Time-4/5-a character episode that doesnt require any monster nor does it need to it develops characters without the need of brutality or cgi monsters...it isnt anything like 'They keep on...' nor does it come close...but it is character driven which is what i love...it is nevertheless a good episode. br / br /Combat-3/5-possibly the weakest episode of this series but it is still enjoyable...it focuses mainly on Owen and pushes the plotline on further for series 2. br / br /I'm Captain Jack Harkness-5+/5-my second favourite episode of the show and well what can i say...its brilliant all the way through to the kiss and then it ends on a great cliffhanger of sorts,but this episode really shines and develops Capt.Jack as a character...god John Barrowman is a fabulous actor...the action is little and far between but it is a genuine classic episode and why the show had beaten its daddy (doctor who)series...series three of doctor who founds the shows feet...but this is the only time i have found a spin-off to be superior to its parent series and this episode shows off why it is. br / br /End of Days-5+/5-a perfect finale that balances everything the show is about...with a great terrifying beastie for the team to face...the son of Satan...a perfect finale for the first series to bow out on...series 2 may be less effective but it is a great follow on and has James Marsters for 3 episodes,so make sure you purchase both of these series immediately!!!and then buy series 3 and 4 of Doctor Who which(in my opinion)bettered this show,nevertheless this first series beat dr who's first two series because of its power and its fabulous acting...luckily Doctor Who writers used this as a lesson and improved the parent series for its future seasons. br /worth your time and a great spin-off,watch for John Barrowman. br / Showing reviews 1-5 of 54 1 2 3 4 5 6 ...11 Next »
