5 out of 5 stars The 14th Warrior   October 24, 2008

This is an excellent piece for those who want to see their sagas and tales made flesh. Set in rather grimmer terrain than Geatland it has an excellent sense of broken terrain, mist and the sea. The characters are straight out of a saga yet firmly rooted in a real economic and social system; this is not Kirk Douglas running along the oars. The "look" is fantastic from the short legged ponies to the Sutton Hoo helmets. Gerard Butler manages to rise above his signature "This is Sparta" persona to be the hero and sword-brother. Stellan Skarsgård is an excellent decaying king whose cruelty (and mercy) start the whole tale. br / br /If the world Beowulf inhabits has the tang of reality (the fisherman is particularly good) the fantastic is also well-served. The troll-father and Grendel are very well observed, and the nature of Grendel's hate all the better explained. When we encounter Grendel's mother it all kicks up a level (and we find we've met her before as well). br / br /The plot and style share much with The 13th Warrior (except in the nature of The Enemy) and we even have at least one actor in common. However, Beowulf is more firmly set in the Norse world than The 13th Warrior. Though I think both are excellent (and thoughtful) action films.

5 out of 5 stars Really very good   November 19, 2008

I really thought that this film was very, very good and was shocked at the poor reviews (I laughed when someone said that this was bad and yet Hollywood's "300" was good). br / br /This is probably the film most accurate to the Anglo-Saxon epic "Beowulf", and brings it really vividly to life. It's an interesting film, and the writers have focused on plot and substance, instead of filling it with battle scenes, which I think is what those who gave it a poor review were expecting from the word "epic". br / br /If you want a film that is like "The Lord of the Rings", but has less battles, then buy this. Really, very, very enjoyable. One of the best films based on northern European mythology around, when compared with "Sword Of Xanten", "Beowulf", "The 13th Warrior" etc.

5 out of 5 stars Better than CGI   December 17, 2007

I was a little nervous that this film would not live up to my expectation. How wrong I was. This film delivers in a truly authentic dark Norse way. Gerard Butler is deep, dark menacing. The scenery is something else. Having just seen the CGI version I can confirm that I wouldn't waste my money buying it. This version is the real mccoy. The film needs to be watched 2-3 times to get the most out of it, as it is working on a number of levels.

4 out of 5 stars closest yet to the poem   January 14, 2008

Those who have criticised this film for its storyline have obviously never read the Old English poem on which it is based (no it isn't a saga!). Of all the film versions this is the one the comes closest to creating a coherent film out of something that is virtually unfilmable in its original form. The reviewer who wanted great battle scenes should be aware that there are no battle scenes in the original 'Beowulf'! Instead the makers very sensibly chose to omit the last third of the epic poem and therefore avoided the clunky shift to fifty years on, where an aged Beowulf fights the dragon in his homeland - which has never successfully been done. By focusing on the personal conflict between Beowulf and Grendel this film is more of a coherent unit than any other film version (if you want to see how truly awful things could have got, go find a copy of the Christopher Lambert film which is bad beyond belief). br /Instead we have a film that has attempted to bring the central characters to life in the same way that the 'Lord of the Rings' films approached such characters as Aragorn - by making them more not less human. The alternative approach of going the CGI way may make for some interesting visuals, but does nothing for making the characters understandable. Gerard Butler does a great job of bringing out a hero that is approachable to a modern audience and holds the film together. Moreoever, the whole look of the film fits the period that is being recreated. br /That said, it does have its flaws - the biggest being the witch Selma, who is a totally new creation. But then translating a 1200 year old poem to the modern screen is bound to need some changes! For the Tolkein fans out there this film at least gives some idea of why the original was such an influence on Tolkein in his own writing. No it isn't 'Lord of the Rings', but of all the film versions this one where at least it is possible to see the connection. br /
