5 out of 5 stars Original, Exciting and Unbelievably Entertaining   February 15, 2008

Sin City, based on Frank Miller's successful series of comic books of the same name is an intense thrill ride from start to finish. The film was directed by Miller himself as well as Robert Rodriguez, along with Quentin Tarantino, who directed a small segment of the final cut. br / br /The ensemble cast is tremendous and includes (among others): Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Brittany Murphy, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Mickey Rourke, Michael Madsen, Josh Hartnett, Benicio Del Toro, Elijah Wood and Rutger Hauer. br / br /The stories of the various different characters and the consequences their actions have on their counterparts are ingeniously interweaved to form a narrative that is constantly moving at break neck speed. br / br /The story begins with Hartigan (Bruce Willis), a detective of Sin City with one day left from retirement, in pursuit of a sick child killer. The ensuing events are violent, unexpected and exhilerating. After Hartigan's story has been told, Rodriguez and Miller move the action along to Marv, a man determined to find out who killed the girl of his dreams. This leads him to the girls of Old Town, the hookers who work the streets there, enforcing their own laws and looking after themselves. After a series of events leads to a possible war between the police and the prostitutes, action has to be taken by all of the characters to prevent it before it is too late. It is during the second half of the film that all of the characters' connections to one another become clear and the story trundles on towards its shocking conclusion. br / br /Usually a film featuring strippers, prostitutes, extreme violence and explosions would be considered "bad taste" cinema, but Sin City is so beautifully acted, shot and directed that it is an astounding masterpiece. The cast are all on top form and the production values are tremendous. Sin City is a must-see! br / br /The DVD extras are excellent, with the second disc featuring the extended director's cut of the film which only adds to the experience, and offer an insight into the creative process behind the film.

5 out of 5 stars A hard tin, with some decent extras   January 2, 2008

Sin city is a film made in 2005, directed by robert rodriguez [and one scene by quentin tarantino] that adapts three of frank miller's graphic novels for the screen. these are all set in a place called sin city, and tell classic film noir tales, from a private eye getting caught up in a turf war to a tough guy getting revenge for the death of a lady, to a cop risking all to protect a girl from a psycho killer. filmed with computer graphics and motion capture and lots of technology this is the most faithful literary adaptation ever. the film looks like the pictures from the book, and the script follows them totally. brutal and brilliant and fully deserving of an 18 certificate. br / br /the first dvd region 2 release had one solitary extra. a ten minute featurette. the region 1 version had lots, but this version never appeared in the uk. so imagine my surprise when walking into HMV for a browse the other week as I had a few minutes to spare, and finding this had finally come to region two! br / br /And it was worth the wait. br / br /there are two discs. the first contains the cinema released cut of the film, and the following extras: br / br /three commentaries. one by rodriguez and tarantino. one by rodriguez and frank miller. and the audience commentary, which is a recording of how the audience at the premiere reacted. shouting and cheering, mostly. br / br /There are lots of documentaries, most of which run ten to fifteen minutes: br / br /how it all went down: convincing frank miller to let the film be made br / br /a piece about the scene tarantino directed br / br /documentaries about the cars, props, costumes and make up. br / br /Two different cinema trailers for the film. br / br /And a ten minute concert piece, showing bruce willis and his band playing at an impromptu concert the cast and crew held. they're very good as well. br / br /on disc two: br / br /an introduction to the disc by robert rodriguez. br / br /the three stories, plus the short one that starts the film, all recut so they now stand alone and can be watched in any order. the story that yellow bastard is the only one to contain any new footage, but these are scenes that were in the book and not the original cinema cut so it's nice to see them br / br /a fifteen minute documentary about the production of the movie. which is very interesting in regards to technical details of how it was made br / br /the long take: a fifteen minute long showing of the scene tarantino directed br / br /the all green version: the film with no backdrops or effects. speeded up to run no more than fifteen minutes. I'd be tempted to watch this even if it wasn't speeded up. it's interesting to look at. br / br /and a ten minute cooking school showing rodriguez telling you how to cook one of his favourite delicacies. br / br /and as the other reviewer said, this comes in a very sturdy box. I wish all dvds had boxes like this. br / br /This is a brilliant package, and it was worth the wait

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's worth the wait   December 10, 2007

The collector's two disc DVD edition of Sin City has finally made it to PAL, and in a beautifully designed tin box, too. I never thought tin could be so sexy! The Region 2 version has all the extras the NTSC discs have, except the Sin-Chroni-City Interactive Game. The package doesn't include the graphic novels either, but real fans will have those anyway. br / br /Are the extras worth the money? Well, I certainly think so. If you're interested in graphics you get a fascinating insight into how Sin City became the stunning, original work of modern film art that it most assuredly is. If you're interested in film making you get commentaries from director Rodriguez, and from Quentin Tarantino and Frank Miller, plus Rodriguez's specials on disc 2. If you're into props, special effects make-up and cars, there's something here for you. You even get Bruce Willis (and John Laurie!) performing at the wrap party. br / br /Plus you get the film, of course. And that lovely tin box. Mmmmmm!

Sin City is a masterpiece, it has to be said. From the stylized masking of colours to the script to the editing and after effects this movie is phenomenal! br /You can watch this film time after time and you will never get bored or cease to be amazed. I highly recommend this film to any movie-lover!

This film hits you like a punch in the face. Frank millers work is faithfully adapted into a brilliant film by Robert rodriguez. I have been a fan of Rodriguez's work for a long time and this is testament to his abilities. The stunning visuals and super acting, especially by mickey rourke, make this a brilliant buy. This set contains the theatrical and extended film along with a pile of extras.
