Amazon.co.uk Neil Jordan's somber iThe Brave One/i is reflective movie about a victim's sense of dislocation and isolation from her own life following a harrowing trauma, which will strike a chord with a lot of people who have known violence. iThe Brave One/i is also a provocative drama about the nature of justice, a theme explored endlessly in American movies that typically find law enforcement wanting. In Jordan's film, however, the conflict between instinctive vigilantism and legal protocols is approached with more deliberateness and complexity than usual. Finally, despite its seriousness of purpose, iThe Brave One/i, to a certain extent, is drearily tethered to the old atrocity-and-revenge genre, bumping along to the familiar, iDeath Wish/i-like rhythms of an avenger seeking successive conflicts with bad guys he or she can blow away.br Somewhat at cross-purposes, iThe Brave One/i stars Jodie Foster in a shattering performance as Erica Bain, a popular essayist on a public radio station in New York. In love and engaged to David (Naveen Andrews), a doctor, Erica and her fiancé are brutally attacked one night by a gang of thugs. David is killed but Erica survives, only to find herself a stranger in her own skin, facing down her fears by shooting violent criminals.br With the city riveted by her anonymous actions, Erica becomes an object of curiosity for a police detective (an excellent Terrence Howard) disillusioned by his own struggles to protect the innocent from truly evil men. Jordan's previous films (iThe Crying Game/i, iBreakfast on Pluto/i) resonate with iThe Brave One/i's most interesting angle, i.e., that each of us possesses a hidden element in our identities that comes out in extreme circumstances, making us wonder who we really are. It's all excellent food for thought, but the film squanders much of its significance by thrusting Erica into numerous, outlandish situations in which her only alternative is to put a bullet in a bad guy. The result is a smart film tediously structured like a disposable B movie. --Tom Keogh

How do you do justice to an injust situation... December 13, 2007 The Film Gem Digger (London, England) 18 out of 24 found this review helpful
While most people will refer to The Brave One as a revenge/vigilante film, my experience and reading of it remains of a different kind. First of all kudos to the Foster and Jordan teaming, this movie feels fresh, it is clever and original in its telling. When it comes to the heart of the movie, I found myself more moved by the idea that so many on this planet have the luxury of never really having had to deal with the dark reality of life.

br /In The Brave One, Erica Baine (Foster) and her fiance (Naveen Andrews) are brutally attacked one evening whilst walking their dog. The chemistry between Andrews and Foster is perfect. And this is what makes his death so traumatic and gives some reason for what is to follow. To me there are two levels to this film. The actual situations, and the main character's emotional state. Some will be moved by her actions, others by her emotions (some maybe both). So while there is a sense of revenge in this film, in my opinion it is more about finding out that happiness and the world you have created for yourself can so easily be taken away from you. And when that happens... what can you do?

br /Take what you will from The Brave One, but watch it! It is definitely up there with Foster's best performances.

br /"The Brave One is an examination of what it might take for a real person to become a vigilante, an examination of what might drive a normal woman to become judge, jury, and executioner." Josh Taylor

br /Erica Bane played by Jodie Foster is one of those women you want to emulate. She is a free wheeling, honest, liberated woman who loves her job and her man. She works for an NPR like station in the 'safest large city in the world". Her voice is authentic and sexy, intelligent and draws you into her world. She loves her life until...Erica and her fiancee are walking their dog one evening in Central Park when they are both assaulted by a team of thugs. Erica is badly beaten, and her fiancee is beaten to death. One moment in time when your life is unalterably forever changed.
br /
br /Erica takes three week to recover from her head injury and she goes home, alone to her empty apartment. It takes her days to weeks to obtain the courage to walk out the front door. This tragedy has left her changed, she lives in fear, but she finally determines she will no longer allow the fear to rule her life. Erica buys a gun. She is weak and fearful but she cannot sleep. So, Erica walks the streets at night. She witnesses a convenience store murder and in self defense kills the perpetrator. In this one instance Erica faced her fears and killed them with a gun. As time goes on, Erica faces her fears with her anger spurring her on. What is it that is pushing Erica on? In my mind it is facing her fears and surviving. The film is brilliant in its depiction of Erica facing these fears- her anxiety, her grief. The film gives Erica enough time to explore the confusion, frustration and sadness that envelopes her. This is an extraordinary performance by Jodie Foster, one of her best.
br /
br /Into the picture comes a police detective played by Terrence Howard. This is one of the most believable performances I have seen. My eyes were opened to this man with his sexy, open, honest performance. He is the only member of the police department who actually listens to Erica. She is torn and tormented by what she is doing but she can't stop.
br /
br /The grit and determination, the reality of a life living and facing your fears is open for a look within. What this terror, grief, and violence does your life is open for us to view. The clues left and discovered by the police detective is also open for us to view. An extraordinary film that does not gloss over nor trivialize the passion, fears and self loathing that becomes pervasive. I was truly mesmerized by these performances and the film.

An exhilarating, smart and stylish thriller February 23, 2008 Dooga (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Erica Bain is a popular, good-looking radio host. She is engaged to her boyfriend, David. One night, the couple walk in the park, happy with their lives when terror strikes... the couple are brutally attacked and beaten, leaving David dead and Erica in hospital. Then, she finds a stranger in herself. Someone she doesn't recognize. Someone that vows vengeance against the pain and misery which has been brought to her. Erica embarks on a vigilante killing spree, and will stop at nothing to make what she feels is wrong, right.
br / A lengthy, well-plotted, clever thriller that has you thinking who is good. As the 'badie' in this film (Erica) is also the protagonist, we are lead to choose what we should think, and who's side should we be on. It is different, compelling, emotional and sexy. The acting is very fine. The cinematography is very interesting and different, with the camera often 'tilting' to one side whilst still moving and following the moving object, which seems very effective.
br / The storyline is tense and exciting, and it will make you think closely in yourself; the action is well-done and elating.
br / All in all, a masterpiece of a modern revenge thriller; exhilarating, smart and stylish...
Fantastic Thriller August 30, 2008 Langdon Ulder (England) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) is a popular radio DJ but her life changes when she and her fiance David are attacked by a gang one night, Erica is in a coma for 3 weeks but David dies.
br /
br /After the attack, Erica shuts down and becomes depressed and when she realises that the police are getting nowhere with the investigation, she buys a gun for protection fearing that the attackers will find her and kill her. While in a shop that night, a man comes in and guns down the cashier and Erica shoots him in self defense. After this, Erica discovers the stranger in herself and becomes a vigilante, hunting down criminals that have either escaped justice or people who threaten Erica, including 2 people on a subway train and a perverted man.

br /The Brave One does have gore in some places, but not really enough for the film to have an 18 rating but regardless of the gore, this is a great thriller that will make people wonder about the stranger inside them and what you are capable of doing if your life is in danger.
