5 out of 5 stars Simple, moving, true and pure, 10 Items Or Less is a heart-warming gem...   September 20, 2008

10 Items Or Less is a real find. To call it a film would be mildly incorrect- it's more of a lesson about how beautiful and surprising life can be when you put a smile on your face and open both of your eyes. Director Brad Silberling manages to squeeze more joy, laughs and genuine emotion into 70 minutes than Hollywood could ever dream of. br / br /Shot on location in the empty outskirts of California, the film has a warm, grainy, summery look... Which you soon realize is the perfect setting for the proceedings- as a kind, tired old movie-star runs into a no-nonsense young checkout girl while researching for his next film. br / br /The friendship created between old movie-star and young checkout girl is stunningly realized. Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega play the two leads in what could have been your average 'buddy movie', but thanks to some flawless acting, a great script and sweetly simplistic directing, 10 Items Or Less turns out to be one of the most heart-warming and surprising pleasures of the year. br / br /After watching, you'll start to see things in a whole new light, and hopefully realize that however rubbish you think life may be, happiness is just around the corner. br /

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Morgan Freeman is excellent as always in creating a believable emmpathic character. His friendship with the cashier grows throughout one single day and the end is perfect. Give the film in chance - it might inspire you to smile more!

Ten Items Or Less [2006] br / br /What a great disappointment! The moral is I think, don't rely on single reviews. Story outline: fading film actor is taken by an independent production company to research a supermarket somewhere on the Mexican border for a film project. Cue trailer park trash, gum chewing checkout girls, inbred temporary store managers, chaotic and grubby product displays, peeling paint, potholed car parks etc., The actor encounters a gal with attitude and an amazing memory for product prices - and tries to give her the confidence to make something of her life. That's the story. It could have been sensitive, gritty, electric, funny, observant. It was instead tedious, flat and chiched. Badly cast for a start. It's tricky to really show how an actor absorbs character by observation. Here we have Morgan Freeman copying the manager's shuffle - not a skilled performance, but then, rubbish direction and lacklustre script. Give it a miss.
