5 out of 5 stars Victorian whodunnit   April 23, 2009

Michael Caine is one of a handful of actors who ooze charisma and have such a compelling and magnetic personality that you can watch them in any- br /thing,so diverse is their range, and of course act their fellow actors off br /the screen with minimum effort, and this gripping mini series is a case in br /point.Oh,and he is a shockingly good actor to boot! br /The story of Jack The Ripper has fascinated and intrigued millions down the years and there have been countless books, films, documentaries and br /conspiracy theories each with their own individual slant on the shocking br /events that occured in that dark autumn of 1888. br /Although this series isnt a definitive account of what happened(although br /the voiceover at the beginning claims that after extensive research and br /studies of Scotland Yard files, they believe their conclusions to be true) br /it is still a superb dramatisation that just has the edge over the recent br /and equally good Johnny Depp vehicle "From Hell",where incidentally, the br /plotlines are vaguely the same. br /This drama is so atmospheric that you can almost smell the foul stench of br /the Victorian streets and fog.Indeed another aspect of the production that br /deserves plaudits is the awe inspiring sets, reading the end credits states br /that it was made at Pinewood Studios, yet looking at various points in the br /film its hard to tell which is studio or on location.Very similar to the br /classic costume dramas so beloved of the BBC. br /There are a lot of frightening and nightmarish sequences throughout, but br /thankfully the blood and gore is kept to an absolute minimum,so the br /narrative is concentrated more on the police investigation which at that br /time was a lot more time consuming ,but on the plus side we have Michael br /Caine's tough but methodical Inspector Abberline getting to the heart of br /the truth in some very intense and well acted scenes that will have you on br /the edge of your seat. br /Anyway,besides Mr Caine he is ably supported by a repertoire of top notch br /acting talent.Lewis Collins as his sidekick Sgt Godley, the beautiful Jane br /Seymour as the love interest,Ray Macnally as royal physician Sir William br /Gull,and the gorgeous duo Susan George and Lysette Anthony who play the br /Ripper victims Catherine Eddowes and Mary Kelly respectively. br /This is definitely worth three hours of anybody's time,i guarantee you br /wont be dissapointed, particularly when we head to the nail biting climax br /and we see a plethora of suspects who may or may not be the crazed killer. br /I understand that during filming several endings were filmed that even br /cast and crew didnt know who was going to be unmasked as the infamous br /Jack The Ripper. br /Even if you have any other of the adaptations this is well worth adding to br /your collection, also if it is to see the legend that is Sir Michael Caine.

This is just great! I've been a fan of this since it was on TV years ago! Michael Caine is excellent as Inspector Abbeline as are the rest of the cast including Lewis Collins. This presentation does 'solve' (I put 'solve' as to many Jack The Ripper is not and may never be solved) who The Ripper was with a plausible plot, whether anyone else thinks they got their man, as ever, is open. (I personally believe it could've been Dr Tumblety who does not appear in this by the way!) br /All in all, this is great drama and if your a Ripperologist or just a fan of watching excellent drama, then I highly reccomend this! Fantastic!
