Amazon.co.uk Review
David Cronenberg's signature obsessions flower in iEastern Promises/i, a stunning look at violence, responsibility, and skin. Near Christmas time in London, a baby is born to a teenage junkie--an event that leads a midwife (Naomi Watts) into the world of the Russian mob. Central to this world is an ambitious enforcer (Viggo Mortensen) who's lately buddied up with the reckless son (Vincent Cassel) of a mob boss (Armin Mueller-Stahl, doing his benign-sinister thing). Screenwriter Steve Knight also wrote iDirty Pretty Things/i, and in some ways this is a companion piece to that film, though utterly different in style. The plot is classical to the point of being familiar, but Cronenberg doesn't allow anything to become sentimental; he and his peerless cinematographer Peter Suschitzky take a cool, controlled approach to this story. Because of that, when the movie erupts in its (relatively brief) violence, it's genuinely shocking. Cronenberg really puts the viewer through it, as though to shame the easy purveyors of pulp violence--nobody will cheer when the blood runs in this film. Still, iEastern Promises/i has a furtive humour, nicely conveyed in Viggo Mortensen's highly original performance. Covered in tattoos, his body a scroll depicting his personal history of violence, Mortensen conveys a subtle blend of resolve and lost-ness. He's a true, haunting mystery man. i--Robert Horton, Amazon.com/ip/p span class="h1"strongStills from IEastern Promises/I (click for larger image). 5 out of 5 stars Vory v zakone   December 26, 2007

Vory v zakone - Thieves in law. br / br /This movie left me very pleased, the script is very good, nothing is over explained but every thing connects. There is a constant threat of menace all through the movie and the portrait of the Russian mafia is dark and sinister, not the men to be trifled with, in fact stay away. br / br /So it is no place for a warm hearted midwife looking for the origins of a new born baby. Her investigations take her face to face with the inner circle of the mafia, a place no one should go. Drugs, assassinations, human trafficking, prostitution - it is a dark world that shuns the light and attention. br / br /With strong preformances by Naomi Watts, Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel it is the script that shines through. The directing is good and when there is violence it is no holds barred and all the time the potential for more is just below the surface. br / br /It is a good and believable film. Highly recommended.

Like, perhaps, many people, I was attracted to this film by happy memories of Viggo Mortensen's excellent portrayal of Aragorn in The Lord Of The Rings. But if you were thinking about that performance too much, it'd be easy to miss him here, as he couldn't be playing a more different character. Once again, however, he appears to be thoroughly immersed in his role, with an easy familiarity with violence (particularly in a central fight scene that - as others have said - sets a new standard for this sort of thing). There are a few equally visceral moments in this film, but the compelling thing is the way they arrive without warning, as if they're just part of the lives of these characters - which, of course, tells you a lot about their lives. br / br /The rest of the cast are really good - each one completely believable in their role, and the attention to detail in the direction is acute. One of my favourite scenes is where Nikolai is talking with a prostitute in (untranslated) Russian, but I found what was going on to be completely intelligible - just the way he casually glances to one side before paying her makes you realise he's about to do something he shouldn't. br /

5 out of 5 stars From Russia with Evil!   April 14, 2008

Terrific film from Cronenberg.Russian mafia in London involved in people smuggling;prostitution;drugs;murder etc.,with British police trying to get a handle on them.A young junkie in a hospital dies giving birth to a baby and leaves a diary. The diary is written in russian and details the foced descent into hell by the young girl.Lots of people want to get hold of the diary, but it falls into the hands of a nurse who is determined to get it translated.Unfortunately she goes to a hangout for russian emigres to find someone to translate it not realising what is in the diary, and whom she is really dealing with. The story is well told, and there is some strong violence, and some surprises.Viggo M seems to get better with each film, and he is very believable here as the "driver" who is also something more than just a driver. How far will he go to achieve his ends?

5 out of 5 stars A great Movie despite the violance   January 20, 2009

I am not a lover of gangster movies or violance and saw it only because I heard that Viggo was named for an Oscar, I did not regret one minute watching it the 1st, 2nd and 3rd time. All the performances are fantastic and the film really puts you in that incredible world of the Russian Mafia, so many have been made about the Italian( the Godfather Trilogy was exceptional) but I have not seen one good movie about the Russian Mob.Cronenberg is a master as always and I think that Mortensen's performance was absolutely amazing. br /This is a film I will not forget and will watch again I am sure br /Christina.
