5 out of 5 stars Trained!   November 19, 2008

Based on an Akira Kurasawa story, this 1985 film is ostensibly an action flick, but it's much more rewarding than your average Stallone or Scharzenegger film of the same period. John Voight excels himself (he was nominated for an Oscar for this performance) as Manny, a prisoner so dangerous he is welded into his cell. When the warden is forced to release him into the prison, Manny duly escapes along with Buck (played by Eric Roberts, brother to Julia), a prison boxer who tags along for the ride. They escape into the Alaskan wilderness and make their way onto a train which unknown to them, is out of conrol. br / br /The imagery of the frozen Alaskan wilderness is excellently captured, as is the sheer brute power and force of the runaway train itself, which is practically a character to itself in the film. The exisential subtext of the film is fairly obvious (Manny being a pure, isolated individual bulleting headlong towards his destiny) but it's not obtrusive - you can enjoy this film simply for the action. There are some brutal setpieces - none of the one-punch-fall-down fighting of other 80s action films - and the acting is superb, especially by Voight (who spent time with real criminals to get Manny's character down, and remained in touch with them for years afterwards), and John Ryan, who plays the warden with soft-padded malevolence. The ending too is unforgettable, a fitting end to one of the finest films of the 1980s.

I first saw this film as a young boy in the late 80's and didn't see it again for over ten years, i never forgot the film and it fascinates me even now it is a true film legend that always needs to be seen. Jon Voigt pulled of the most amazing acting i have ever seen, Will always be my number 1 film. Runaway Train

You can't go wrong with this little cracker of a film. Very entertaining which keeps you guessing until the last few, tragic moments. Buy and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars On the right track   February 10, 2009

Every now and then you find a film you keep watching over again. For me this is one of them. br / br /Sure the storyline has holes you could drive a train through , like escaping by jumping into a freezing river at temperatures -30c and then running away across the wilderness until you were dry - just couldn't happen -I've been in these temperatures and however greased up you were you'd be dead in minutes, and the train driver having a heart attack at the exact moment the train leaves with the escapee's on it. It's all just too improbable - however !! br / br /The basic message of the film is delivered by incredible performances by Voight and Roberts as the anti-heros and John Ryan as the warden - the anti-villian. These performances lift the film head and shoulders above the average movie and the incredibility of the plot details become irrelevant. The action and dialog are both very harsh, sometimes very ugly, but that's the whole point. This is a portrayal of the criminal mentality -i.e. to escape responsibility by any means regardless of the consequences and risk to others and yourself. This is what brings the story to its unpredictable but inevitable conclusion. br /The screenplay is written by Edward Bunker - a repeated offender and jail-bird himself so is delivered entirely 'as-is'.. br / br /Briefly - expect a beautiful film and you'll be disappointed. Expect an exciting ride with a message and an amazing and haunting music score by Trevor Jones and you'll get more than your monies-worth.

5 out of 5 stars human ego   July 4, 2009
Pietro Sommavilla
Runaway Train is a really one of the best interesting low budget movies i've seen. br /It is a simple story of human drama. br /People victims of their ego's ignorance with their fallacious reasoning, causing negative thoughts and feelings. br /Their final destination is for every human being.. freedom.
