Amazon.co.uk Review Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in iIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull/i, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (iWar of the Worlds/i) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --iEllen A. Kim/i

Great! June 19, 2008 Mr. R. C. Auty (England) 12 out of 21 found this review helpful
Does anybody watch films for the pure enjoyment anymore? I do, and I really enjoyed this film. Harrison Ford was great and well supported by the rest. Yes a bit OTT and the CGI was a bit ropey, but they didn't detract from the fun. Loved the scene where Indy survived the nuclear blast, brilliantly done and funny to boot. I'll be ordering a copy!
Not the Best Indiana Jones Film, But Still Pretty Darn Good August 14, 2008 John Kwok (New York, NY USA) 9 out of 17 found this review helpful
Thankfully neither George Lucas nor Stephen Spielberg have ruined the Indiana Jones franchise, like the Star Wars prequels almost did to the entire series, with the "Phantom Menace" being almost unwatchable. Instead, in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", we get a rousing bit of popcorn entertainment, harkening back to classic 1930s and 1940s serials. It is definitely not the best in the Indiana Jones franchise ("Raiders of the Lost Ark" is quite far the best), but it is a credible sequel to the previous three Indiana Jones films, picking up the action nearly 20 years after "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". Noted screenwriter David Koepp has wrought an occasionally clunky screenplay, but this one truly works with ample excitement in store for veteran archaeologist Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr. and his pals. Of course there is also yet another rousing film score from composer John Williams, though the Indiana Jones theme isn't heard in its entirety until the film's closing credits. And there's excellent cinematography too from Janusz Kaminski, who is probably best noted for his work on "Schindler's List".

br /It's 1957, and the opening sequences open and close with a bang, as a kidnapped Jones finds himself and his pal Mac (Ray Winstone) as prisoners of a secret Soviet Red Army strike force who've sneaked into Nevada's secret Area 51 in search of extraterrestrial treasure. Led by the sadistic KGB Colonel Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett in yet another fine performance), Indy is forced at gunpoint to find this treasure, and he does, before escaping and finding himself the lucky survivor of a US nuclear blast near the Area 51 complex. Back in Connecticut teaching archaeology at Marshall College (which is set at real-life Yale University), Indy finds himself the victim of a FBI witch hunt and the target of several KGB agents. He also meets up with college dropout Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf), the bearer of dire news; old graduate school friend and colleague, archaeologist Harold Oxley (John Hurt) has been abducted in Peru, along with Mutt's mother Mary, after Oxley discovered a secret kingdom of the crystal skull. So it's off to Peru in search of Oxley, mother Mary (who is actually Indy's old flame Marion Ravenswood) and meeting up once more with Mac, Spalko, and more Soviet soldiers.

br /There are laughs a plenty in store for anyone who fondly remembers the previous Indiana Jones films. Ford brings a fine blend of elderly wisdom and young derring do in his latest portrayal of an older Indiana Jones (There's a brief reference too to the "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" television series.). Karen Allen is superb as the older, more mature, Marion Ravenswood, but frankly, I wish she had more dialogue and screen time. As her son Mutt, Shia LaBeouf comes across as a risk-taking fictional version of a young James Dean, complete with almost the same wardrobe and coarse slang as Dean's. Last, but not least, Jim Broadbent is terrific in his few brief scenes as Marshall College's dean and Indy's long-time faculty friend and colleague. The film's end may not surprise those who've anticipated correctly the fine chemistry between Jones and Ravenswood, but it is certainly a delightful sentimental touch, with potential promise for more adventures in store for both Indy and Mutt. While "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" isn't quite the cinematic adventure that "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was, it is still a pretty darn good Indiana Jones film.
FANTASTIC! A must for any Indy fan September 12, 2008 Ms. C. M. Bass (UK) 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I think some peoples comments on her are a little unfiar. Yes, I dont agree that this film in as good as the originals, however, you really need to look at it as a film on its own. No one can expect the same as the old classics, esp as Mr Ford is many many years older.
br /I thought the acting was fantasic, it is action packed and still has room for a little humour.
br /Top film, a must for any Indy / Harrison Ford fan : )

Whip crackingly good 4th movie from the Indiana Jones chronology May 26, 2008 Kali (United Kingdom) 10 out of 20 found this review helpful
CONTAINS SPOILERS.
br /
br /I have to admit I was not expecting much when I went to see this movie, I mean Harrison Ford is getting on a bit but it turned out to be a brilliant movie with laughs galore and fantastic special effects.

br /Indie is now a man of mature years, but he is still getting into trouble, and this time its the Russians that are causing him a whole heap of grief. Forced to help them to find an Alien Artefact from Area 57 Indie finds himself everyones enemy, including the FBI who have "Reds under the bed" fever.
br /
br /Cate Blanchett hams it up beig time as Irino Spalko a sword toting Russian with world domination on her mind and John Hurt plays an academic gone mad in this swash buckling adventure that take you from America, to Peru and a hunt for a skull made of crystal that just might be from another planet or even another dimension. Of course we are treated to some great special effects, some fabulous stunts, great music and a lot of laughs, the snake scene will have you in stitches.
br /
br /There is an old love interest for Indie in the form of Marion Ravenwood played by the delicious Karen Allen and a shocking discovering for India when he finds out that he is a Dad, turns out that Marion had a baby, and that baby is now an angst ridden young man who is good with a switch blade and has no desire to be lumbered with a father, but Indie is having none of that and there are no tender and hilarious moments as father and son spar with each other, with Indie finally getting the upper hand.
br /
br /All in all, a great film and worth going to the cinema to see it rather than waiting for it to come out on DVD!
"Your A Teacher?" "Part-Time" - Indy's Back November 14, 2008 Martin (Basingstoke, Hampshire, UK) 6 out of 12 found this review helpful
Occasionally a film revival never goes well (Star Wars Prequel Trilogy springs to mind) But that is not the case with "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"...
br /
br /First off - The one problem everyone i have met has is the fact that the story involves Alien Technology and although it does take some of the old magic of what Indy stood For it also gives something that more than makes up for it... it is something Indy has never really encountered before...
br /
br /Also my fedora goes off to Harrison Ford, who, even at the age of 60, still makes Indiana Jones 4 as Fun and Exciting as the first 3 Indy Films Were. as well i would like to give appreciation to Shia Labouf as Mutt, who shines as a possible choice for Harrison to hand the Torch onto, Karen Allen for a 5-Star return as Marion Ravenwood As Well as Cate Blanchett as the Villain who is as terrifying as Her Role as Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings films...
br /
br /All in all, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is worth a watch on 2 fronts - it will have everything that Indy fans have grown to love - Action, Adventure with elements of Comedy. whereas the people who have never seen an indy film, it is good as a standalone piece.
br /
br /wether it is rented or bought - catch this film...
