5 out of 5 stars A sublime piece of movie-making...   March 6, 2008

It may have had a 24 day shoot, and a $1.3 million budget, but it's a beautifully crafted film, with superb performances from Vincent D'Onofrio and Rene Zellweger. Based on a true story, ignore the Mills and Boon blurb on the cover of the newly-released Region 2 version - it's not like that at ALL - sit back and enjoy. Even more glorious is the Region 1 version, which has the bonus of commentary by Vincent and director Dan Ireland. A worthy addition to any collection

For those who haven't seen it, prepare for a treat! From the moment I saw it on the BBC or ITV( I can't remember which) I have been hoping it would be released for region two viewers.I doubted it would ever be as it dated from 1996 but on the off chance, I sometimes checked. And today incredibly, patience has been rewarded. It doesn't matter if you are not interested in heroic fantasy and if you dislike Conan the barbarian. I do dislike him and yet I loved that film because of the incredible performances of Vincent d'Onofrio and up to a certain point of Renée Zellwegger. It is a film about relationships and the complexities that attend them, it is about loyalties, emotional dependence, about longing and fear of commitment, about trust and hope and despair. It is simply beautiful.I also recommend the book it was adpated from. It is compelling and most of the personnal correspondence it contains is so worth reading.
