4 out of 5 stars I Drink your poodle!   October 6, 2009

Psychiatrist Stephen Hughes(Richard Harrington) is just getting over the suicide of his partner(he finds her body in the bath), when he decides to return to work. He survives on a diet of anti-depressants and wine, and attempts closure on her death by immersing himself in his work. His first case when he returns to work is a troubled teenager Nina(Jaime Winstone) whose been brought into hospital after slitting her wrists. However, it soon becomes apparent that theres more to this case than meets the eye, and soon Stephen finds himself plummeting downwards into a very real nightmare. br /I think its safe to say that the Welsh horror film is a very rare commodity. Theres 1996's Darklands, very much a Welsh version of 'The Wicker Man' with Craig Fairbrass investigating Druidic cults and erm... thats about it. There have been plenty of great Welsh actors and directors but sadly very few successful feature films, let alone horror films. So this really was a pleasant suprise. br /The film gradually builds up the tension, with a series of subtle shocks, until it gives us the pay off of an unexpected, and quite disturbing climax. I liked the fact that the supernatural aspect of the film is left very open ended, and as for the film's tone. Well, imagine a cross between Odishon and Frightmare and your only part of the way there. The twist ending especially recalls the grimy splendour of Pete Walker in his pomp. br /Harrington is a little bland as Stephen, but theres excellent work from Mark Lewis Jones as Stephen's boss Eisner and Louise Delamere is also excellent as Nina's frightened mother Liz. However, the film belongs to Jaime Winstone, who delivers a wonderful performance as the disturbed Nina. br /If one Looks closely enough there are a couple of plot holes, but it would be a bit churlish to nit pick what was on the whole a highly enjoyable directorial debut. A very enjoyable horror film. 4 out of 5 br /

I'm quite fond of Ms Winstone as an actress, but this is far from her finest hour. Think TV 'thriller' movie, only with an even smaller budget, and you might get an idea what to expect. br / br /Probably best avoided.
